I have OA in the hips & find that whenever I try to straighten up after bending, I experience a sensation of catching / pain in the right hip (which is the worse one).

I did try & splay my right foot out which helped a bit - but does anyone have any tips about how to do this manoeuvre successfully & without pain?

    Hello @Stumpyella

Welcome to the community, we hope you will find support and advice here.

Are you bending forward from the hips ? Could you try bending your knees and lowering down like that, more like a squat, so that your thighs do the work rather than the muscles aroung the hips?

    All the best Joanne

    hi @Stumpyella

If you're trying to pick something up prior to surgery, it's better, safer and easier to get a pick up stick, which is basically a litter picker. Less painful too.

11 months post surgery I am still very wary about bending. I either squat or, bend onto one knee and use something nearby to help me get up. I did actually get stuck last weekend when I was out and about taking photos, got down onto one knee to take a photo, got stuck and took ages for my husband to realise so be careful!

There are many ways of bending over so find something that works for you, isn't too painful and keeps you safe.
