Osteoarthritis in 1st and 2nd metatarsals of the foot
Hi everyone. I wonder if anyone can help I am having difficulties with my right foot. An x-ray has previously indicated that I have moderate to severe osteoarthritis in the 1st and 2nd metatarsals in the foot. This has manifested itself with a lump on top of my foot which can swell from time to time and has been treated in the past with steroid injections. At the moment the pain is controllable with Voltarol Gel. Of more concern to me is the discomfort I also experience in the ball of my foot with some numbness and periodic cramping and twitching of the toes. In particular I need my right foot to depress the accelerator pedal when I drive the car. This action is very uncomfortable as the toes clench when I depress the pedal. As a result I no longer drive long distances and I am worried as to how much longer I am going to be able to drive the car at all. The toes also cramp in the evenings and sometimes in bed at night disturbing my sleep. I have seen a surgeon in the past who concentrated on the lump on my foot, prescribing the steroid injections. However I could get nowhere with the issues regarding the ball of my foot and my toes. Does anyone else have this problem? If so, is there a specific title for this type of osteoarthritis and is there any specific treatment available?

hi @Aceshigh , first of all welcome to the online community - it’s great to have you here! I’m so sorry to hear that you’re having such discomfort with your foot, I cannot imagine that’s easy to deal with. Have you seen a physiotherapist /occupational therapist/podiatrist at any point? They may be able to give you some exercises to do at home to help with the discomfort and/or recommend ways to make it more comfortable for you to do activities, like driving. I will attach some links, which may be useful. I hope the discomfort in your foot improves.

Hi Ellen. It was good of you to do that research on my behalf. I had previously done some research. Unfortunately I have not found anything which really fits the issues I have. I am beginning to wonder whether the OA in my metatarsals has nothing to do with the issues in my toes. I am also thinking that the toe problem might be nerve damage rather than OA. Thinking a trip to see the GP is the next port of call as the specialist I saw about the lump on the metatarsals wasn’t interested in my toes issue being disinclined to pass any comment at all when asked. The steroid injections certainly made no difference to the involuntary contractions and numbness. Thanks for your help

Hi,
I myself have osteoarthritis in my 2nd and 3rd TMT joints but what you are describing sounds exactly the same as what my mum has been suffering from. She has arthritis also in her foot but the pain she has, which you have just described exactly the same, is from bursitis. She recently had a CT scan and this is what they found it was. So it can be related to the arthritis but a different problem that they are going to treat with a steroid injection into the bursa
