my osteo is getting much worse, and walking is becoming problematic now. both hips and knees but mainly the right side. I have quite unpleasant pain just walking round supermarkets after even modest activity beforehand, and I am looking into the best painkillers. advice and suggestions would be appreciated.
it is not so much being wimpish and weak minded about a bit of pain more the inconvenience and the disruption it causes during normal activities.
I have a supply of tramadol and was given co codomal, and paracetamol. the tramadol, is unpleasant to take , I feel washed out by it.
I am not sure I should take it outside the house. I may be wrong.
the co codomal causes constipation which is not a very good side effect, though I may try it again. is there anything that does the job of these two without any unpleasantness? Can you suggest a pain killer to try? I am wondering about seeing the doctor again but it seems an increasingly forlorn thing to do.

many thanks,

Nick

    Hi Nick.
What you need is to either use the co-cos and up your fibre (prune juice is VERY effective :!:  ) or the tramadol which is really strong. If you do go for the tramadol you WILL get used to it after time. I used it when I had my back op and was fine - could take 2 at a time and drive and everything. BUT when I tired again a while back I was sick all the next day!!! Think you need to develop a bit of a tolearnce to it!
Do you have any non steroid anti inflams like diclofenac or ibuprofen? These can also be really helpful at reducing inflamation and painkilling too.
The other options as I'm sure you know are things like heat packs or ice, which can be suprisinly effective too.
I do hope you find something to suit you.

    reply,

thanks for the ideas you have given. i have been thinking along these lines, and am wondering about trying a stronger co codomal. I am on a very high fibre diet as much because of diverticuler disease which has gone now, mercifully, and i take diclofenic. I am averse to taking tablets over a long time but maybe I am being silly about it.
I will try to do as you suggest, and see how it goes,

many thanks for taking the trouble to reply,

    Nick

Hi I know what you mean i am in the same difficulty, I have OA which as you say is very painful. The Doctor gave me strong painkiller and i was frightened of becoming addicted to them. I tried to come off and just stopped taking them, that was a big mistake i had withdrawal symptons felt panicky, sweating and felt really ill,I rang the doctor and was told to go back on them. I have stayed on them because i cant stand the pain without them but i dont like them. hope you manage to find some thing that suits you but i think you will have to have the strong additive sort if you want to get the pain under control all the best Alicea

I have taken to heart what frogmorten has said and started taking tramodal. the first time I tried them some weeks ago I felt dreadful, now for some strange reason I have adapted to them just as he said I would i feel quite normal, and most of the pain has gone. one is on a slight high, but it is a positive feeling. I am taking them, for now, 50mg, four times a day. again they have worked wonderfully so far, and i am able to drive as he says he can. time will tell!!!!
one more thing, you get a wonderful sleep taking tramodal!!!
the pain was becoming quite unpleasant after any activity, it is easier now.

    Hi,
I have oa and take co-dydramol. Sometimes I think they don't work and stop taking them, but I soon change my mind. :) Sometimes there is no option if you want to carry on! Hope you get some relief soon. Love Sue

I have advanced OA in my spine, spinal stenois & bulging discs.

I think co-codamol and co-dyramol do nothing for me yet find Solpadol works great. Tramadol have never been a problem for me, I have fortunately never felt spaced on them. I have heard others say this though. I'd give them a shot as I think they control the pain the best and are quickest to take effect in the mornings when I am very stiff and sore. I also take diclofenac which really helps and I take Omeprazole too to prevent stomach upset. I get bad muscle spasms in my back which can make the sciatica worse and take diazepam when this happens, this is terrific, really relaxes the muscles. I take amitryptilne at night which helps me sleep, it does give you some whacky dreams though. Last night I dreamt I was in a plane crash and me and 5 others used a very fat person's rain coat as a parachute and flew like this over the hills.

Unfortunatly, I can't take any drugs in the anti inflammatory family, as I have had a perforated duodenal ulcer from taking them some years ago. (They don't prescribe them in the same way now, so don't worry, they give a durg to protect you now), but it makes it a risk for me!!! Anyone who gets tummy problems, indigestion, and strange sick hunger pains, should see their GP though

I think I was unlucky and silly, ignoring warning signs! Anyway, we are all different and what is good for one person isn't for another. Glad you find solpadine good. I do nick my husbands ibruprophine sometimes, but don't tell him.:) Sue

Hi, I've been on diclofenac for 18 months, max daily dose.
I did start to take a Vicks Cold Remedy drink at bedtime - it seemed to help me sleep better :) !

However, I asked the chemist last week if I was ok to take additional Paracetomol tablets in the day as well as the Vicks at bedtime..... when i mentioned I took Ramipril for high blood pressure she said "you mustn't take the Vicks or anything similar in that case, because they can increase your blood pressure" :(

I have my second rheumy appointment soon and will also ask about best painkillers because yesterday I was having great difficulty just being on my feet :( my left knee was killing me and my right foot was playing up too :!:

I've put a support bandage on the knee this morning (the little s*d has kept me awake since the early hours!) but fortunately the right ankle is much better.

Ssorry, I've gone on a bit , to get back to your query - I think there seems to be lots of painkillers to 'try' with some suiting some folk and others suiting other folk :) Seems to be trial and error on what will work in each case :!:

    Good luck, Jackie x
