I am embarrassed about this  but i developed a very nasty chest infection and could not get rid of it and my dr put me on a 2 week course of amoxacillin 500mg tablets 3 times a day...
Then after the 2 weeks i felt no better and had gunge on my lungs worse than at first so my dr then gave me a weeks course of steriods (predisilone) 30mg each day and another type of antibiotic called Erythromycin (250mg) tablets 4 each day total 1000mg per day.
Now for the embarrassing bit..although i am feeling better from the chest infection I have developed a very very itchy bum  and have heard that it may be because of the antibiotics that have killed of the freindly bacteria in my gut and as a result i have now got this itchy bum problem which is very bad after passing motions
I dont want to go back to the drs and bare my bum and want to know if its likley that now i have stopped taking the antibiotics that my freindly bacteria will come back and sort this new problem out or will it need a visit to the drs again.
Gosh tablets work wonders but then give you more things to deal with.
Thanks for any help
has anyone else had this after taking antibiotics as i suppose they just go in and kill everything even freindly stuff your body needs

Thanks again.0 -
Hi
I would go back to Drs. just to check. I know antibiotics can cause thrush, not sure if you can get it there though. Not sure if the drinks will help.

Hi Justin,
Can't really say but I think Vonski is right and you should pop back. see antibiotics can kick of either IBD or IBS and it would be best to just go and been seen.
Hope it soon sorts out for you, Cris0 -
Thanks - it is so frustrating though but will give my doc a bell tomorrow but if i have to go i am going to be so embarassed.0

Hi
Sure he/she has seen it all before but I know what you mean

You're right about the antibiotics killing off the good bacteria as well as the bad so yes, a good probiotic yoghurt or drink will help restore and settle your gut.
It also helps with the runs you can get with antibiotics too.
Still worth getting that itch looked at though.
Hope you're soon feeling better.

Hi Justin
After antibiotics I often got thrush "down there" but not in the ****. Thrush is really quite horrid and once you start scratching, well ......... Live plain yoghourt is good very soothing on the area :oops It is not the yoghurt itself but the bacteria, lactobacillus acidophilus, in the yoghurt that helps the body maintain, or regain, its natural pH level and keeps yeast under control. Good to eat it too, for same reasons.
I think it is more than likely to be thrush as it seems such a coincidence as you have just finished a course of antibiotics and you are absolutely right that the med gets rid of the bad but also gets rid of the good bacteria.
I think you can buy stuff over the counter these days for thrush but I suppose it is best to give your gp a call or make an appointment. You may well find that you will not be examined as your doc will be sure of the cause.
I am pleased that you were able to post and can well understand that you were a little embarrassed but you put it all very well and as you can see, you have had quite a few responses.
You will soon be rid of that itch I bet!
Take care

Hi
i like that people put posts on here that are a bit embarrasing  so when i get something embarrassing i will feel ok about posting it.
dont worry about going to docs, one told me once that he see at least one bum or bits a day, that day it was mine
hope you get it sorted

It sounds like a fungal infection( its happened to me... )
Doctor will give you some cream which should do the trick.

Hi, I've had it often and my husband got it right through his digestive tract, and ended up on anti-fungals!!! I tend to get it now if I'm a bit run down, as well as after anti-biotics.
Do go to the docs to be on the safe side though, and the stuff you buy is so expensive and often I need 2 lots! Hope you feel better soon. Love Sue0 -
Thrush can easily be passed from one person to another as my husband well knows :oops:The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.

Thanks for all the posts - its calmed down a bit now and is more of a burning sensation, but that itch is like realy intense...like the sort of itch where you feel like you could scratch it with sandpaper just to make it go away.
I will let you know how it goes tomorrow - hope the dr can give something without the need for an examination
thanks again.0 -
Now I know why the dr told me to eat lots of yogurt when I was put on anti biotics. I started getting a cold just after my op so went to the dr before it developed into something more, I suffer from bronchitis, he said eats lots of yogurt.
My son used to suffer from an itchy bum when he was a lot younger, when I metioned this to a friend of mine she asked if he ate lots of oranges, which he did, she suggested I stop them which I did, within 24 hours he was cured, not sure why oranges caused it but it worked. Bit upsetting for my son as he loved them.
Sorry son if you ever read this.

I would go back to gp as thrush is quite common after antibiotics the yogurts will help you with that. joanneJoanne0

Thanks everyone - I went back to gp and he seemed to know as he said its very common to have trouble with hemoroids after antibiotics and i got a perscription for some cream which has a steroid in it. I have also bought some of those Yakult drinks as they have the freindly bacteria in that has been destroyed by the antibiotics.
I am on the 2nd day and its still really bad as i stated its always when i have been to the loo  its like glass, It gets that bad that when i have been i cant do anything for 2 and a half hours thats the time it takes until i can do normal things (like sit down )
Because of this i called my dr and they said leave it a few days and if its not getting any better then to phone them on thursday or friday, its making me very anxious about having a bowl movement now and also dont want to eat much as what they say what goes in has to come out
Can anyone let me know how long it takes to calm down as it looks like this is a common problem.
At least i can finally sit down at the computer to type this now0 -
I've had it since I was young. The cortisteroid creams thins the skin and leaves red marks. Washing frequently with soap dries the skin and makes it worse, soap is a no no. Use creams instead.0

So the cream I have is thinning the skin (will this make it worse) I so wish it would calm down as its becomming unbearable and is having an effect on the things i can do.
Thanks everyone.0 -
Check on your creams details, prolonged use can have this affect. With the itch, pain is almost a relief!0

Sounds like thrush, (antibiotics & steroids make you prone to this) you can buy canesten cream over the counter. Also eat lots of activia!!justinbarrow wrote:I am embarrassed about this  but i developed a very nasty chest infection and could not get rid of it and my dr put me on a 2 week course of amoxacillin 500mg tablets 3 times a day...

Poor you. I have a feeling from what you are saying that you have two things going on at the same time. One of them is horrid but if both are occurring at the same time, that is totally unbearable and I really do sympathise.
Antibiotics have excellent uses and get rid of infection etc, but they can play havoc with one as well.
I do hope you get all the help you need as soon as possible.

couldnt stand it anymore and managed to get an appointment this evening, the dr examined me    and i nearly jumped onto the ceiling.
He said everything is fine outside its the inside where the trouble is, he also said couldnt feel any hemoroids and that it was very inflammed inside and said that there was fresh blood there.
He told me to discontinue the ointment i was using and has gave me some more cream called anusol which i was told has a stronger steroid in it and said that i should start to feel better in a few days.
I could hardly sit down when i went in and had to wait at the drs for 45 mins after because of it being disturbed.
I also got the chance to discuss my latest blood results and I am slightly enimic due to the anti biotics and my esr is on 69 but this is due to my arthiritis which is playing up at the moment aswell.
The Dr also said that he couldnt examin me thoroughly due to the discomfort and pain but was confident that it was a bad infection and not hemoroids.
He also said to keep having medicated baths with savalon and to stay away from scented soaps.
He was great and really understood what i was going through, I just hope the next few days things get better.
I know there are a lot of bad people in this world but i would not wish this on anyone ever and now totally understand what people go through with this sort of infection.
Will keep you all posted on how it goes - Thanks again everyone.0
