It’s a shame we can’t send a few of the feral noddies I see hanging round the local town drinking smoking spitting and swearing, and generally making life miserable for all the decent folk trying to go about their business. And what about a certain group who wanted to walk through Wootton Bassette, taking everythnig from this country and giving nothing back but hatred of it and of those who fight and die so they can have the luxery to shout and protest, but haven't got the guts to leave here as it pays their keep etc, sorry I'm off on one again!

    Hi Mellman,

I understand why you think this way, but I don't think these "feral noddies" are fit to follow in the footsteps of the brave soldiers who are already there. I agree with your comments on Wootton Bassette. Bloomin disgrace!!

    Hi Trish,

My heart goes out to you - can't think of the right words.

Because I knew about the tragic death of your son, I hestitated to write about my meeting with the young soldier today.

But somehow, he seemed to represent ALL the young soldiers who are risking their lives on a daily basis on our behalf, and that is why I wanted to post this thread.

Your son was a very brave young man, and you must miss him terribly. But you must also feel very proud of him for what he did for all of us.

Please forgive me if I have upset you by writing about my meeting with this brave young man.

My thoughts are with you and Bill at this very sad time.

You gave me the platform to stand on today Joan. I have always found it too hard to write about him.

People have been pm ing me to ask what is wrong or am I ok as they had noticed I had gone quiet.

I have had so much to cope with I suppose I've worn myself out.

Normal service will be resumed asap.

Trisher, I'm so glad you've shared this with us all - you've been so brave after such a terrible, terrible year.

My heart and love go out to you at this coming anniversary of your loss of your boy ....I'm so sorry for what you're having to go through.

May you gain strength from knowing all our thoughts are with you.

With lots of love, Linda XX

It made me cry a little, this thread :-(

I don't know why anyone thinks war is the answer to anything, it's people like this soldier and their families who make the sacrifices while we carry on supporting, feeding and housing the very people who support the opposition!

Joan and Trisher I found your stories so moving, particularly so as when I was in France at Christmas I visited the grave of a great uncle who was killed during WW1. He was a Leicester boy who'd never been away from his home town before he enlisted at the age of 15 by lying about his age. At age 18 he died of wounds and was buried in the cemetery in a small Northern French industrial town. I, my son, daughter and grandchildren were the first family members to visit his grave. The grand chidren were so sweet. When we left they said 'Goodbye great, great Uncle William'.
I find it so sad that nearly a hundred years later we are still sending brave boys overseas to be killed,

Hi, I fully support all members of the armed forces in Afghanistan, they are doing a wonderful job often without praise or thanks, I would have given that young soldier a hug too, they all need to know that we are behind them.

Trisher, really sorry to learn about your son, I hope that you and your family continue to find the strength to cope with you loss love Jaspercatxx

Joan I'm so glad you gave him a hug! What a crazy world we live in that we still have to send brave men and women into war!

    Trish
You have suffered so much. There are no words I can write that could possibly comfort you but my heart goes out to you and your husband and I send you love and hugs. You are an amazingly courageous woman and as I have said before, truly truly humbling.

By a strange coincidence, today I met someone who knows the young soldier I met. She said that he attends her church with his mother when he is home, and that when he is in Afghanistan, the congregation include him in their prayers.

She said that he is a very well-respected young man who is modest about his achievements. This was the impression he gave me too.
