HAS ANYONE CHANGED THEIR FOOD TYPE INTAKE?

Initially I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis but last week advised re-diagnosed with SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) & Polyarthritis.
So, I have now read x4 books on it all and a common theme is trying a Lupus Recovery Diet and I have read umpteen stories of people eventually getting rid of all their symptoms - no painful swollen joints, skin lumps & bumps disappearing etc.
Doctors are saying that there is no scientific proof that foods eaten play a part however as I have nothing to loose I started it yesterday.
It is Low Fat, Vegan and Wholefoods and then evenually reintroducing fish and meat if I wish.
Just wondered if anyone else has tried such a thing. People with Rheumatoid Arthritis, SLE, Fibromyalgia & Diabetes claim wonderful things.
It is a healthy way of eating anyway so going to stick to it religiously and I will keep you all posted of any improvements.

Hi Lynn
Many thanks for your post.
Yep, the 'diet' is a lifestyle change and not a weightloss diet so it is all sensible and above board. It is just very healthy and stems from the belief that some of our bodies cannot cope with dairy or meat as it thinks it is a 'foreign item' entering my body and sends my immune system haywire. It is healthy food anyway so I may as well embark on it and see.
Ideally I should do a water only fast for a while to start with a clean slate however as I am on all sorts of medication at the moment it is not advisable but that only means if the food intake works it'll take a little longer.
Paws crossed and thanks again!

So many doctors sneer at the idea that food affects people but what goes in must surely have an effect on the body. I am dairy intolerant, have been since birth, which is entirely reasonable as far as I'm concerned. Why is stuff from cows good for people? It's the lactose we can't process, or some of us can't and that's 'cos we're not cows. God, my grammar is slack today.
Go for it girl. You have nothing to lose and possibly a huge amount to gain. You do realise, of course, that if you are cured you will no longer belong here! (That is a joke, really, that's my intention, to make you laugh.) I wish you well with it and I sincerely hope it makes a great difference to your life. Will it mean a drug-free existence? One can only hope. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -

I am interested to hear how you get on
I personally have never gone down this route as the amount of things suggested that I should remove from my diet to improve my RA was immense. I was diagnosed at 19 and felt that if I'm going to have this disease for the rest of then I'm not going to make myslef any more miserable by cutting out the things in life that I enjoy and that the evidence against isn't concrete.
I work on the basis of having a health balanced diet and moderation on the naughty stuff....mmmm chocolate & G&T's
This is my opinion tho and think people should go with what works for them

Hi Carol,
I am very interested in your experiment, and agree with the other replies about it being a sensible option.
However, if you are as weak willed as me if may be difficult to stick to, good luck! Also if (like me) you are carrying a few more pounds than are absolutely necessary you may find that you lose weight despite not really intending to.
Please please keep us posted, I'm very eager to know how you get on, whatever the outcome.
Lynn, dandelion roots poached in rancid goats milk? Nice! I haven't heard Delia mention that one before!
Best of luck with the diet Carol, Kevin0 -
Dear Carol
This is a subject close to my heart.. I have RA and although the medication (methotrexate) is the main thing that allows me to function at a reasonable level, there is no doubt, in my mind, that food DOES have an impact on inflammation...
For the last 6 weeks I have been eating a very 'simple' diet of salmon/cod/chicken/vegetables/wholemeal bread...... no red meat , no processed food, no tomatoes, no citrus, no chocolate, very little diary ... and I have only had one flare up in 6 weeks - before that, I was having a flare up every week.. I have also had a lot of stress in the last 6 weeks (having had a hip replacement) so one might expect I would have had even more flares, but this has not happened....
I look forward to hearing how you get on.
best wishes

Hi Carol,
My sister has Lupus and hasn't gone down this route.
I have RA and have tried a diet change way back in the early days ...it was supposed to be a miracle cure. It didn't work for me, although I was convinced, at first, it was doing me the power of good. I lost alot of weight and got frightened when I fell below 7stone and stopped weighing myself  I tried the diet for 4 months and decided to go back to a normal eating whilst on holiday. I didn't realise how ill I was feeling till I started eating normally again and I'm now back to a sensible weight.
Trying the diet is a good thing because it could work for you but take care also and be sensible. At least with Lupus you won't get the joint deformities which is the tell tale sign of other forms of arthritis.
I'd be interested to know how you go on.

A change of diet did nothing for me, either, as far as the diabetes goes, so haven't worried about trying it for anything else.
Also did a bit of research on honey........whether I had a teaspoon, a dessertspoon or a tablespoon each day made absolutely no difference to my sugar levels........good, I can now have some Manuka honey each day! Whether or not it actually does some good or not I don't know, but it tastes delicious!

If you love chocolate and miss it you could try a carob bar which you can buy from health food shops or supermarket's healthy aisles ......will warn you it's not as wonderful but not a bad substitute.

I admire your spirit my girl. I hope you can keep up the good work, it will be difficult, that I do not doubt, but the possibility of that ultimate prize . . . . well!
What about other stuff too, such as using pure soap, both for you and your laundry, Method cleaning fluids for the house, trying to cut down on anything processed or manufactured. Is that worth considering too? I rely a great deal on white vinegar, lemon juice, bicarb, all natural cleaning materials. The only chemical thing we use is Harpic 100% limescale remover, 'cos limescale is a dreadful problem in our area. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -

Carob chocolate reminded me of rabbit poo!
Please advise me of nondairy cream that tastes of full fat yummy cream and pure water that tastes of irn bru ha ha!
Have a grrrrrreat day today Legs, Carol x0 -

Hi DD
These are good tips - many thanks for that. It is such alot to get your head around. I thought it'd just be a case of me altering my tastebuds however need to be sooooo organised! Never thought about chemical cleaners and stuff so many thanks.

Dark chocolate (particularly with a high cocoa content) does have health benefits too. Can't remember what they are tho. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Good luck with the new food regime, be interesting to see what results you get.
The euphoria of doing something positive must be good.
Anyhow, theres no shortage of good tasting food these days. I had a friend that swears by a fruit only diet and says that got rid of the pains in his toes.
On a lighter note does 'whole-grain' include beer?

Hi Lynne
Many thanks for your positive words.
The restrictive food thing although hard in the beginning will be worth it if it helps so that is what I keep in my head!
And you are right, hopefully it will all become 2nd nature to me (sooner rather than later!!).
Thanks again

You may now be beginning to suspect I have a chocolate fixation .....but ........for a treat Carol what about melting a bar of dark chocolate and then dipping strawberries into them and letting them set ....I love those, simple but delicious
Luv Legs who isn't eating anything remotely like chocolate at the moment ..... (whispers ......but may do in a little while with a nice cuppa tea.)Love, Legs x
