Have 'nt been on for a while....still working full time, the tiredness is killing and it's just such an effort to type. I still read the messages though and send silent hugs  I just had a call from the hospital to say that I was booked for my pre-op assessment on the 26th, for hip replacement, but there was a cancellation i could have it 10 o'clock tomorrow!!!!!
I jumped at it of course but i feel really nervous. My youngest daughter who stayed with me all through summer ,has just gone back to university and it's hit me that i'm alone again. My eldest daughter lives not too far away, but it's not the same as having someone to come home to.
Anyway, I know there is nothing to be nervous about but would really, really appreciate any support that any of you kind people would give me :D :Di

It's been years since my last pre-op assessment but I remember it being fairly straightforward. I recall being told what would happen and when, the effects of GA, when the physios would pitch up and get to work on me etc etc etc. This could be something that varies from hospital to hospital tho, so don't take my words as a guide. The very best of luck - I am sure it will be fine. DD

Hi I'm sure you'll be fine, it would be nice to have morel support all the time at home, but if your other daughter isn't too far away, I'm sure she'll give you plenty. It is lucky to get in like that, so quick you won't have much time to think!

Try not to worry too much although I know it's hard not too. It's great news that your assessment has been brought forward. You might even get your surgery brought forward if they think you're a good candidate for it.
They will make sure you are able to walk upstairs etc.... before you get home from hospital after your op and will be out of bed the day after your op. Dont worry about managing afterwards you'll be able to manage most likely better than you are doing now as you're no doubt in pain and that's why you need the op in the first place. Best of luck, do let us know how you get on.

    Hi Beowolf,

Nice to see you again :D Good luck on the 26th... I am sure it will go well for you.

I have to say Rita is right there, they will keep you till your able to do steps and be fairy stable. I had my feet done (in the end both together) and live alone and it was probably easier than having someone to help you..... I think I was back on them quicker than I would have been.

The worse thing for me was boredom

I know its not the same as having your hip done but it will be ok so try not to worry.

I used to use a shoulder bag to carry things, a flask came in handy and for me I played the sheep game   Got to the end with a score nobody has ever beaten :lol:

You will be fine flower so please don't worry. There are ways around things, but honestly for me it was the boredom! Make sure you have either your mobile topped up and your phone near by and ... if you are into pc games its a good way of killing time..... I really do know you will be fine. Nice to see you again and will have my fingers crossed for you. Cris x

Great news but you are bound to be nervous.. I was when I had my THR 5yrs ago . Although I live with my husband I did manage at home on my own from coming out of hospital.. my daughter popped in a couple of times a day just to check and get me anything I couldn't manage.. the hospital will get you moving pretty quick and check that you can manage stairs before you go home.. I had a district nurse come in to remove the stitch and although I had to just strip wash for the first week or so I did manage better than I thought... come back with any questions you have , its better to do some preparation in the house before you go in for your op...
Our worst times are always our best lessons.

    Hi Beowolf

I had my hip replaced at the beginning of May this year. I live alone and work full time and am very independent. I was in hospital for 5 days and I went to say with my sister after that for 9 days. Iwould say you could do with someone staying with you for perhaps a week or two after discharge.. you will be on two crutches and you leg will feel very very heavy and you will have difficulty preparing food, carrying even very light things, or bending to put things in the washer, for example. If I hadn't been at my sister's I don't think I would have eaten (even though I had stocked up on microwavable food)! It was also good to have someone there during the night in that first week, as you do worry about all sorts of twinges that you get.

I had no problems getting upstairs after the operation - I'm assuming you've got a bannister to hold onto?

I had to have strip washes for weeks afterwards as I don't have a separate shower cubicle and couldn't get my leg over the side of the bath to have a shower.

I'm assuming you know that you will need various items of equipment - eg a raised toilet seat, a surround for the toilet, a high chair, a couple of 'grabbers' so that you don't bend to pick things up off the floor. The Council arranged these for me - it varies according to where you live.. The OT will probably talk to you about this when you go for your pre-op.

I think I've probably told you enough for this first posting! I'm really really pleased I had it done. I went back to work at 13 weeks post op , although am still needing to use one crutc, especially when I overdo things...

Looking forward to hear how you get on.. Please just ask if you want to know anything else.

    Hi Beowolf!

    Good luck with it all!
Some confusion going on here! It is the pre op they have given you a cancellation for isn't it?

I'm the worst to suggest dont worry.....I did!!!!! and BP etc were unfavourable on the day...yet they accepted the nerves and called me for the op!.... They know what they are doing in theatre!

    DON'T WORRY!

Hi...I just had my pre op for my 2nd THR today.....it wasnt as long as the first one because they had most of my details and it was just a matter of checking.
They will do an ecg, BP, bloods [for various things] Height and weight. MRSA swabs....they will tell you all about the operation and if you have any questions fire them at the pre assess nurse...they are good.
After that I went to the OT.....our hospital {dont know if its the same in all authorities] has a mock kitchen and bathroom....they take you round the kitchen to see what things you will need...if you see anything and its not offered just ask if you think it will help....then they do the bathroom
After that I had to go to x ray to have my un operated hip x rayed. it hadnt been done since the first THR which was Feb this year. You've probably had an x ray so that wont apply.
They make sure all the stuff is in place before you go into hospital. I had 2 raised toilet seats and surrounds. One upstairs and one downstairs. I had a trolly. I was sent home with 2 sticks not crutches and when my husband was at work no way could i get into the kitchen to make a coffee and bring it back so the trolly was great. Leave your stick/crutch behind and use the gtroll to lean on ...into the kitchen, make your coffee/lunch whatever, put it on the trolly and take it back in. Retrieve your crutches/sticks. I also had a grabber/picker upper my grandaughter called it LOL, long handled shoe horn, hospital chair....I only have 2 setees and they like you on something with 2 arms that you can push yourself up on. You cant bend forward for 6 weeks, have to sleep on your back 6 weeks etc....it would be a help to have someone with you for a week or so until you find your feet {pardon the pun LOL} You will need someone to help you get dressed {bottom part anyhway} socks shoes etc because you are not allowed to bend
Sorry if that sounds daunting its not meant to be....I know all the questions I asked before i went in for mine.....you'll adapt.
Just post and shout if your stuck and someone will help.....get your pre assess over and done with.....thats easy....no problem there and your one step closer
    Love

    Hi Beowolf

The nervousness you feel is natural. It's the fear of the unknown!
I felt as you did. At your pre op they test you for MRSA just a swap; check your heart; height; weight; blood pressure and a general chit chat about the op. They may also send you for an x-ray if you haven't had one in a while.

When you next see your GP tell them how tired you're feeling. They may need to review your meds.

Sorry to hear that you're so tired. Arthur does that to you and when you're working there's no place to hide when you're not feeling well. Is there any chance of you maybe reducing your hours/days? I used to find pushing myself constantly made me feel worse. Try and rest as much as possible.

Why not telephone your eldest daughter and ask her to come along with you? When my OH can't take me to the hospital I ask my son or DIL. They'll jump at the chance to be there for you.

Sending you some cyber hugs and I hope all goes well at your pre-op assessment.

    Kind regards
    Sharmaine

Hi Beowolf - when I first read this I thought you meant you were having your actual op today!! With just one day notice!! Now I think you mean that you have your pre-op today? Does that mean your op date will be bought forward too?

I had no one to care for me at home either after my op and the hospital kept me in a bit longer because of this (9 days) by then I really wanted to escape. I had friends looking after S for me and at times they were based at home - but a lot of the time I was "home alone." You will need to plan for the practicalities ie someone around to put the food delivery away, to run errands, change the bed and help with the laundry. You will however cope, the forum is a great place for sharing your experiences and asking questions and seeking reassurance. You will soon be so much better off.

Hope appointment goes well today, some are more informative than others. Chase up your OT equipment if the wheels arent set in motion for it being ordered today.

    Speedy
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

What on earth was I worried about ????

Honestly it was exactly as you told me it would be....they did all the things you wise peeps told me they would ,so I was well prepared. The only thing i didn't go prepared with was the specimen but i managed to perform

My daughter dropped me off, but at such short notice could'nt get a babysitter for my youngest g/daughter aged 2....not a wise place for her to be. It was'nt a problem in the end, i was just panicking for nothing  i think we all get like that sometimes.
Thanks again for all your support...... it really did help
