Ask the wise women of the forums for their advice and you will receive pearls of wisdom. I cannot speak for the occasional wise man - they are rare creatures. I am glad it was all OK - when do you hope for your op? Would it be a good thing if they brought that forward too? Don't forget to check mjkings hospital tips sticky at the top of this board - it has a myriad of good things to consider, no matter what the op. DD

    Just to add to the practical advice given by Marion and Hileena these are some of the things I've bought/used this week;

I'm using a perching stool given by the hospital to strip wash at present but I've ordered some grab rails for my shower for later on.

I've found a sports drinks bottle / travel mug really useful for moving cold & hot drinks around whilst on crutches, and I seem to have a daysack welded to my back at present.

Some really loose fitting tracksuit trousers are a must - I got mine in Tesco and they fit even over my leg brace.

I've also bought a wedge support pillow for reading in bed which just makes it a bit more comfortable, and I couldnt survive without my foot stool and laptray by the sofa at present.

Like Hileena I have a trolley I can push around. The Occupational Therapists asked me what I was going to do for food, and I said use the microwave (this is what they do recommend). But then they asked how was I going to get the plates from the microwave to wherever I'd sit to eat it, and I hadnt thought about that. Trolley is the answer. or move the microwave!

I'm also using my office chair on wheels to push myself around the living room which fortunately has laminate flooring

Padded gloves might help to prevent getting sore palms from the crutches (like cycling gloves)

Ice packs will be useful - one of those wine cooler sleeves cut so it opens out flat works, and wrapped in a tea towel.

And get yourself signed up for internet food shopping.

Have 'nt been on for a while....still working full time, the tiredness is killing and it's just such an effort to type. I still read the messages though and send silent hugs  I just had a call from the hospital to say that I was booked for my pre-op assessment on the 26th, for hip replacement, but there was a cancellation i could have it 10 o'clock tomorrow!!!!!
I jumped at it of course but i feel really nervous. My youngest daughter who stayed with me all through summer ,has just gone back to university and it's hit me that i'm alone again. My eldest daughter lives not too far away, but it's not the same as having someone to come home to.
Anyway, I know there is nothing to be nervous about but would really, really appreciate any support that any of you kind people would give me :D :Di
Sending you positive thoughts and best wishes, Love from Lynn xxxx

Just wanted to add my reassurance, and best wishes for successful surgery.

As I too live alone, I planned everything like a military operation, prior to my TKR. Enough food in the freezer and cupboards to last until Christmas - I had the op in April! Arrangements made for collection and delivery of prescriptions. Friends and neighbours on call if needed. A plan for every eventuality.

I have two sons, both of whom live fairly long distances from me. They arranged it between them that one came to stay for the first week, and the other for the second week. I have never told them this of course, but, whilst I loved having them, I couldn`t wait to be on my own, to have my independence back. I truly believe that I recovered very quickly, because, quite frankly, I had to. I`m sure you will be the same. I wish you all the luck in the world.....Ange.x.

    Hi Ange.

thanks for your good wishes :D

i know what you mean about planning a military operation, I have my list of tasks to be performed, things to buy etc and i'm crossing them off one by one.... very satisfying :D

if only my brain would drag itself out of slush mode i might able to think better lol but i am getting there and, like you, i do enjoy being independent.....mostly :D Beo

    Hi beo :D

ange's words rang so true about loving to have family helping out but very soon wanting to be on your own again. ... that's exactly how it was for me too!
two weeks being 'looked after' is lovely but when you're used to being 'master/ mistress' of your own affairs it can soon feel claustrophobic... it's also a good sign that you're getting stronger.

good luck with the lists... where would we be without them.:lol:

    (((hugs)))
