Not looking forward to meeting

Hi, by rights this should be on Working Matters Forum - but not many peeps read or post on there ... so have risked posting it here instead.

Am meeting with my boss today to plan my return for work. Two different agendas will be at play here - what is best for him and what is best for me ... so am not looking forward to it and actually feeling quite nervous/anxious about it.

My boss reported that he sent of my referral to occy health, but neither occy health or HR had received it. So I self referred on Tuesday and got a cancellation on Wed! I am fit for work but with phased return, so adaptations and restrictions.

I am so nervous!
(I don't like this feeling, I'm usually ultra confident in school!)

Speedy
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

Hi Speedy, surely he will compromise? Just make sure you don't get pushed into agreeing anything unsuitable. I know you are a valued member of staff and he will want to keep you sweetish.
I think it is natural to feel nervous but am sure it will be fine.
    Good luck,
    Elizabeth

Thank you Elizabeth, Annie and Marion. For some reason I really feel like I need support. I hope by the meeting (I have podiatry, then am seeing jobshare teacher and then seeing head...) that I will be feeling calmer and more in control.

By the way Annie, he has a very warped sense of humour, so no jiggling around in my pocket!!

    Hi speedy :D

I'll be in your pocket too.... will try not to move about too much either!

You have DDA on your side and have the advantage now of knowing what you are entitled to by way of adaptations, phased return etc and have now got HR on board too.

Take the initiative when you meet your boss... tell him what you want your phased return to look like... and if he doesn't agree or you don't like what he suggests then say you need time to think his proposals through and get back to him Monday. that way you'll not be pressed into any sort of rushed agreement!

It's understandable you're nervous! when you've been off work for a long time it's quite a prospect going back..... but you know something? it might all go very smoothly for you now!

Strength and positive vibes winging their way to you.

    ((((hugs))))

speedalong I really hope your meeting goes well for you. I am feeling optimistic today as I have just come home after a meeting with my manager. I currently work a 12.5 hour night shift and a 7.5 hour day shift a week but am really struggling to the point of calling in work today to drop of a colleauges present off and ending up blubbing all over my manager. I had been worrying so much about asking to reduce my hours and do 2 shorter day shifts but that is in fact what she has suggested. She is also refering me to occ health and has reassured me that she will support me in any way she can so that my expereince isnt lost to the team. so woohoo I feel relieved and am sending some of my postivie vibes to you - goodluck x

    Hi Speedalong

Try not to readily agree to what THEY want if you do not think it suitable for you.

Say to them that you will consider the pros and cons of their proposals and get back to them - if this is possible.

Thinking positive thoughts for you and good luck.

    Thank you everyone. :)

June, Sue, Toni and Hileena for your support.

Iris, Delboy, Carol for the advice.

    Spacey for the good vibes.

Annie and Elizabeth - maybe you could both whisk him away ...

It has done me good to go into work. I was so nervous - but it was good to see everyone again - staff and especially the children. My mind is now buzzing re lesson ideas, songs, activities etc ...

Meeting with boss was ok, considering he took a personal call on his mobile, half way through to pay for his car service!! Can you imagine me doing that half way through a lesson or on parent's evening?! The phased return plan isn't too bad - just one week I'm not sure about it being too much - the only advantage being I have the Fri off that week and so will be able to recover in time for the weekend with S.

Access to work paperwork also arrived today .... things are moving!!

    Thanks again,

    Speedy

I just heaved a sigh of relief, Speedy. You do sound now as if you are ready to go back to work and I'm so glad that it's all now falling into place.

I have all the respect in the world for all teachers.......I knew at the age of 15 it wasn't for me, so opted out!

    Reeesult ...speedy :D

glad that your meeting with the boss wasn't too bad in terms of outcome... but what a cheek, not to say downright rude of him to have his phone on during your meeting!! :x

It is nerve racking going back to work after months of being off... makes you feel like a stranger! but.... it doesn't take long for things to normalise.... and what better way is there? than meeting the children you're going to teach when you go back.

Have a lovely weekend.... forget about all of this for a mo and do something relaxing and enjoyable.

    Hi Speedy,
I’m glad things went better than you expected today. I’m not surprised you felt nervous. It was such a big day for you. Well it looks as if things are going ahead for you. You have a lot to think about over the weekend. Good to see you get your enthusiasm back. All those ideas running around your head.

    Hi Annie, Iris and Ironic,

I DID feel just like a stranger going back into school again after so long.

Now my teacher brain is switched on ... I can't see it being easy to switch off for a bit... one of the hazards of the job!

I wanted to be a teacher all my life(!) Even as a child my favourite game was schools and poor Grandma (who left school at 14) had exercise books and I taught her every Saturday!!

    Thanks Marion,

I'm just a bit worried about week 3, where I have a quite a big jump in hours.

    Hope you are doing well,

    Hi Speedy

I am glad that you finally have some answers about your return to work. It was rude of the head to take a call, who do they think they are?
I am sure when you get back there, it will all come back. Teachers do not loose their touch!!! he he he

I don't know about you but I used to have terrible nightmares during the summer holidays - that I could not control the class!!! But I think this is normal. Then the night before, packing your bags and polishing your shoes, like being back at school.

If you are not happy with the jump in hours on week 3 can you change that? Or is there any other way to get more support during that week?

I am sure that you will be fine - hope you still post on here from time to time. xx

fxx - PS do you need a hand? Still looking for a job?!!!!!!!!!!

    Hey Speedy

Great to hear you are smiling and raring to go. You'll be like a duck to water I bet.

It was good you saw everyone again including the kids as being off work can be isolating and you forget and it can be a bit scary going back to your daily world.

It is a few weeks away the 3rd week you are worried about and if need be hopefully that week can be adjusted.

Play it by ear and remember to try not to overdo it. Difficult I know as my Mum was a Headteacher and she couldn't switch off.

    Keep smiling, Carol
