Hi
I have been around but not posted much of late. Well, I had nothing new to say really. Anyhoo, I have my consultant appointment on Thursday, with my `other` hip consultant who I see for my other hip (not the THR/ recently dislocated hip)
I am planning to ask his opinion of the hip restrictions I have been given for life by another consultant. I`m not sure what he will say, but I need to ask.
My boss rang last week, to ask me to attend a meeting with her and HR re my future and `return` to work. Because of the mix up by the hospital with my appointment which they `lost` for the 14th oct, I have had to tell them about the letter I have received re the restrictions. This has obviously worried them, and prompted this meeting, although she said there was no agenda for the meeting!!
I have told her I am asking for a 2nd opinion, and will have that info for the meeting (5th Nov).
I am very worried about the future now, in lots of ways.
NB

    Hi nearly

Let us hope the 'other' doctor has some better ideas which will help.

If not I will be thinking of you for that work apt too. I hope they will be kind to you.

    Hi NB,

Good that you have the appointment on Thursday but I can well understand your worries. Try and take one thing at a time, see what is said on Thursday and then you can plan your next move. As for the meeting at work you may have to delay that until you have been given all the information.

    Hi
Thanks everyone. I will make a list of the questions I want answering , I will forget otherwise!
My work meeting isn`t until next week, but i am not organising it, and the date is set. I feel ok and positive at times and at others i feel all over the place!! People seem to be making plans for things, Christmas etc.. and I can`t think beyond these two dates.
I want to feel in control again, and hope to be soon.

as for the meeting next week ..... prepare what you can and try not to let the 'what if's' take over as they sap more energy than they deserve to receive

    Hi NB,
Have just caught up with tour threads. I can only echo what everyone has said. The restrictions for life rules are very challenging. Hope the other hip consultant has different ideas.

I can appreciate your anxieties re HR and management meetings re return to work. I also know the difficulties you face in doing our job with the restrictions in place. However there are ways around- clinic based duties perhaps? Not the same I know. How about lecturing in health? Any thoughts about that? Planned primaries with dining room tables? Or safeguarding families where your assessment and relationship skills are needed more than physical skills?

Hope things work out soon, bet your head is all over the place- mine would be, take care of yourself. Let me know if I can help. X elaine

Best wishes for Thursday. Please try not to dwell on the 'what ifs' - they are singularly unhelpful and pointless and won't help your confidence. I hope it all goes well and please let us know, if you can, how it turns out. Thinking of you. DD

    Hi
Thanks Chris, Winky, DD, and Julie
I am trying not to do the `what if` thing too much, but it is hard when I seem to have too much time to think!!

Elaine, Thanks for your comments, I know you understand what implications for our role these restrictions will have. There are lots of things I could still do if the restrictions are to stand and i hope that HR and my boss will take note of these points. It will just take a bit of forethought really.
    I will keep you posted.

    Hi NB

I hope you receive a definitive answer regarding your hip restrictions so that you can report back to work. Can they write a letter to explain your situation to your employers? Sometimes having things in writing helps. Good luck with your appointment tomorrow.

I'm seeing the consultant tomorrow too about my shoulders/arms. Looking forward to getting a diagnosis and maybe some x rays. I've been telling them about this for nearly four years and finally they're doing something other than saying it's probably arthur.

It is worrying when health matters impact on so many things. Just remember you're the important factor in all this. Is it possible for you to cut down on your hours/days? Have you seen the work's Occupational Therapist?

    With regards

Hi NB, wishing you all the best for your appointment on Thursday, I hope the consultant has a more positive oppinion.

Likewise, hope the work meeting goes well, at least they are being proactive and supportive.

I know what you mean about time on your hands to think, when we are trying to fit in life and work into each day there is less time to think. Do your best to keep busy.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi
well I`m back!!!!! :D And yes I`m smiling!
I saw my lovely `other` Consultant, who I have asked to be my ONLY Consultant, to stop future confusions etc... He said it would make more sense for him to look after both my hips!!
He examined my hips and said my THR hip is weak at the moment (understandably) and to do my physio exercises and the hydro ones when I go swimming.
AND, re the restrictions- he was very diplomatic about the Consultant I saw in Sept but said he hopes that the restrictions will not be for life and he will review me again in 6 weeks. I am to keep them til then, but can go back to work with a `fit note` and a phased return.
So I am feeling quite positive. My hips were painful when he examined me but I expected that . I was seen just 5 mins after my appointment time and am home having another cuppa :D
Thanks fo rthe pocket duty Cris and Toni- hope you have removed the boot!!

Well that went well, I am pleased for you and I hope you feel more optimistic and settled. It is a good idea to stick with just the one consultant I think, that way you do get some continuity of thought and care. Overall this is a good thing! Well done you. DD

Wow that sounds really positive from where you were a few weeks ago. I know there's a way to go yet but at least a return to work is possible. Make sure though you only work within your limits, your colleagues will be happy to assist. Good idea too to stick with one consultant, esecially one you like. Think a large glass of red is in order tonight- I'll join you, anyone else coming to celebrate?

So glad it all had a positive outcome, NB. You must be so relieved and pleased that you at least have the specialists sorted!

Hope you get a good night's sleep tonight.
