I predict a riot!
Now there’s all hell breaking loose in London right now as students are sort of rioting about the bill to increase university fees, now is it me or is this little bit of legislation slightly biased?, in Scotland and Wales they aren’t having their tuition fees increased it’s only us here in England, now call me cynical but isn’t this slightly biased just like prescription charges, here we pay but they don’t!, how’s that work then??.

I think I've got this right; if you are Scottish, and attend a Scottish university, you will continue to pay nothing.
If you are Welsh, and attend a Welsh or an English university, you will pay the current tuition fees of £3,290 a year.
So it's free for the Scottish, no increases for the Welsh, but a huge rise for the English. This doesn't seem fair to me.
There's not only tuition fees apartheid. There is also health apartheid. A number of expensive cancer drugs, as well as a drug for rheumatoid arthritis, have been licensed for NHS use in Scotland but not in England.0 -
I think they should pay for their education.. It's not like they're gonna have to pay till they're earning a decent wage.. Why should the tax payer foot the bill for them to get a decent job... I would gas these silly buggers carrying on with the police at the minute.
Half of them won't even want to get the jobs earning goods money so they don't have to pay it back, or they'll take themselves abroad.
I'd like to know the statistics of how many actually pay back the full amount..

I think that they are driving an even bigger wedge through what used to be Great Britain...it is such a shame that the government is intent on doing this.
Has for the students...no I do not condone the violence...but why should they sit back and pay so much more then wales and Scotland...it is madnessLove

It's odd but from what was on the news not many of them seem to be British or at least spoke with an accent but I'm not sure as I don't speak London English, one girl who was obviously out to cause problems wasn't that bright from what I saw, she was really odd sounding, let me elabortate.
" wot I is sayin is it's vem posh lot vat's messin wid our heducation no mistakeman, vem and them police lot beatin on all dem studunts like!..
Hmm see what a good modern education has given us, a rioting numpty who we are all paying for, later on she will be popping kids out like no tomorrow to avoid ever going to work.0 -
Totally agree Rehab. They might even be earning a few bob out of it too. Professional rioters.
I think most of them are high, probably on a cocktail of drugs washed down with a large quantity of drink etc.
Probably been planning it for weeks. Gives them something to brag about for the next few months. Something to add to their CV.

Can I just clarify a point, we still pay for prescriptions in Scotland. Yes they are on a phased reduction but we still pay. Also, there are some treatments I believe that are available in England that are not in Scotland. And we have the same issues with age & weight etc when wanting a joint replacement. Scotland is not the land of milk & honey that the media would have everyone believe.
As for the students probably half of them are rent a mob.

And all the kids will have different dads and exotic names like bluebell pixie fart, shandy bass, shaz-er-nay, asbo.... But all of them will have the same first name: R... R bluebell, R shandy...
I detest it when people speak that way, it makes my blood boil. Grrrrr........ x:evil

Oh dear poor old Charlie boy got caught up in it!, who in hell let him get anywhere near the protest in the first place, unless it was done to prove a point, no one will support them now case closed, stiched up like a kipper!. x0

Yep you can bet your bottom dollar the Bullingdon set wont ever have to worry about Daddy no being able to pay, ihow nice it is to be able to bank off shore, ones money doesn't get tainted by having lots of it going to the common people in the way of pointless taxation now does it my good man!.
Odd but the bankers etc all get to snuffle in the cash trough at tax payers expence AGAIN!, and that's even after they had emptied it the last time and then made us re fill it for them and their mates, so now we have to stand back while the pigs feed again!, we really need another way of doing things in this country.0 -

My lad has been to university and worked his **** off while doing his degree, masters and PHD. Now teaching. The laugh is he is paying off his debt but do you know what the government does. They collect the money directly from his wages each month and put it into a pot. Then at the end...THE END OF THE YEAR they take all the money he has paid off from his loan. During that time his loan is acquiring interest monthly which is added to his loan.
If a bank did this all hell would break loose and yet the government are allowed to make extra money out of people like my lad.
We know young people that now cannot afford to go to the university chosen due to costs, they come from low income families. To my mind and this is only my opinion this would appear to be the start of only young people from wealthy families going to university. My lad is the first to go through university and we are so proud of him. We could not help him financial but got him large food parcels of cheap food etc to keep him going.
The system as it stands is a lottery and all depends on where you live. Why should someone living in Scotland pay nothing and yet in England it is double plus.
I would like to add that many students leave and still are unable to get a job.....does make you wonder if it is worth all the hard work they put in and the debt they leave with.0 -
Problem is they have opened a door that will never close now, odd that a lot of the very people i.e. the left of society that champion free education and free healthcare etc are also strong believers in championing the cause of those who aren’t born here but who never the less come here legally or not also be allowed to take advantage of our free infrastructure even though they never have or will “give back” to the very free system they take from so willingly
Now theirs mine your kids are paying the price for these liberal views, for example EU residents are allowed to get student loans when studying yet 70% don’t repay them so we the tax payer have to cough up.this money comes from the very loan infrastructure our kids use.
This education argument is just one part of a greater problem we all face, and that’s to much going out not enough coming in, It’s the same for healthcare benefits etc, we cannot keep educating, medically treating supporting with housing benefits etc the vast numbers who flock here for a chance to dip into the shrinking lake of tax payers cash, there’s just to many of them and the numbers will keep going up not down unless we face hard facts, but sadly the left still wont allow open debate on this issue and shout it down as “racist “ so the debate is dead even before it’s begun.
All I will say is the last surviving member of the Titainc disaster had to sell her last belongings to pay for her stay in an old peoples home yet down the road we have vast numbers of Afghans Nigerians etc living in council houses and bagging thousands a month in benefits while the rest of us get less and less, if it isn’t stopped soon the majority of the cash will be absorbed by the growing numbers of free loaders.
Yes education should be free to British kids but those days are going slowly and wont be coming back until people understand we can’t keep paying for the worlds flotsam and jetsam to get the same rights and benefits as us who were actually born here.0 -
mellman i cannot agree more and you have covered everything i and my hubby have said many times. People folk for all over the world because of our over generous welfare state that goes in favour of everyone except the people that were born in Britain. The door needs to be slammed shut not just pushed too. People need to be sent back....we cannot afford to support all theses people. Why should someone who has not paid into the system be entitled to MORE than my family????0
-
Hi lupin I’m not anti anything not racist etc but just say what I see, we cannot carry on the way we are going there is something deeply wrong and it would be a start to think of us more as a tribe than an open morphic mass of the worlds humanity, would anyone expect it is their right to just go to a country and get an education or healthcare they can’t get back home without paying for any of it?, the answer is no but it’s what is being forced on us and our kids, I’d love to allow all of it but I can see it’s a tide that will only grow and grow, we have slowly watched our public infrastructure to be drained by more and more people while we get less and taxed more or grants and state aid cut and cut, the old have to sell their things houses etc for the care they had been told was there when they needed it, when time came to gain access to it someone had already been their and dipped their hand in the pot and they brought there whole family with them to help themselves as well.
The last lot just borrowed more, it’s burying their heads in the sand and worse, it’s really passing the bill to the next couple of generations it’s still not stopped It’s like a kind of shop lifting where the customers who come in three days later get a slice of the cost of the stolen goods put onto their bill, the thing is the free loader wont stop coming back to the store and in time they bring more of their friends and family to have a go, it’s a feedback loop and it wont stop but keep growing until the store shuts it’s doors to anyone who can’t pay up front.0 -
I also have 2 girls struggling after university. Both have part time jobs now and one is continuing with her non-subsidised education in her spare time.Their partners have also struggled getting work although one has now got a job making computer games. The government claim that they will help those students from low-income families but I am sure many potential students will be put off from studying due to the costs.
My brother was best friends with Kevin Gately and was with him the day he died in 1974, Red Lion Square disorders, pathology results were inconclusive as to how he died and I'm probably not allowed to make a suggestion on this forum. So the current rioting is upsetting and I understand another student was badly injured and had to have a brain operation. I am all for peaceful demonstrations but the risk is they are hi-jacked by others which appears to be the case at present.

Excuse me for asking but is this post regarding the riot we've already had or the one coming up arranged for tonight, (Saturday).
This is apparantly designed to take place at Scotland Yard.
Seems to be all out war to me!

I think Mell was referring to previous events. So there is another one tonight! I guess they are on a roll so no point stopping now.
I sincerely hope there are not going to be any more injuries to people or animals.

I am all for freedom of speech and the right to protest but i do worry about these poor students that are getting hurt. I really have the feeling that a great deal of this violence is from groups that are not students but like to cause damage and trouble.0
-
It’s said that violence doesn’t prove anything but the coppers like to use flippin great wood sticks to **** these kids on the head, I’m surprised no one else hasn’t had a brain injury , and in a way I’m with the bohemians a little bit, at least they have the guts to stand up and take a kicking for what they believe in, the rest of us are way to compliant we just shrug write the odd e mail to our MP and keep on letting them shaft us like they do, I remember the pro fox hunting march where coppers beat up old people with batons and a lot of middle aged law abiding people got hurt, then nothing was said but it always stuck in my mind that London coppers are one step removed from football thugs, and what about the G20 protests where they pushed that innocent man over who then died, the coppers didn’t have their numbers on their lapels they took them off so they couldn’t be identified, 1984 is alive and kicking, well not today it’s alive and beating your child’s brains in to keep order, there has to be a better way honestly..0

Must admit police down in london and surrounding areas are a special breed!!!!!! and you have to be there to believe and have their ways!!!!have lived in areas like elephant and castle, east ham etc so well aware of how some police forces work and i am sorry to say that violence in my book breads violence.0

Please don't say a cracked skull doesn't matter Rehab.MY brother and his friend were just trying to get home from uni and got caught up in the demo walking to the station. Kevin Gately was only 21 and he died from a blow to the head. Innocent people get injured and killed. There are those who would say don't go on these demo's if you don't want to get hurt but sometimes people get caught up in them without meaning too.

rehab44 wrote:YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS PEEPS!
Do you want to see these students(sic) attacking the police, damaging property, burning cars without a response?
So there has been ONE cracked skull, a small price to pay in my view!
But of course some of you liberal tree hugging sandal wearing Guardian readers will be saying it is not the fault of the students/criminals/terrorist (pick your flavour) it is the fault of society i.e ME!
These rioters are no different to ones I have faced in NI the only difference is that these ones don't have access to guns and molotovs... and when they do.. are there are cops burning in the streets maybe you will be the first to say Send in the Troop!!!! :evil :evil
I find your post a little insulting Rehab! One cracked skull is one skull too many.
The point you make about not being able to get their hands on guns or molatoff cocktails, DON'T YOU BELIEVE IT!
What planet are you on?
I also find your remark about people who read the Guardian etc etc very insulting. After all, everyone is different and entitled to their own opinion.
There is no need to be so rude about it.
And if you knew anything AT ALL about living in London and the Special Breed of coppers they have down here you would probably set light to them too.

Speaking from experience i have been caught up in trouble when returning home from work when i lived at the elephant and castle...granted this was over30 years ago. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and there was a lot of trouble, people being attacked, shops, cars smashed up. I have never been so scared in the whole of my life.... luckily for me i managed to get away and ran...ran home to the flat in lived in. I was not a trouble maker...just a person trying to get home. I am not saying that everyone is innocent in all the trouble down in London but i am sure their will be innocent people caught up and even hurt. Like i have said before the London police are a breed of their own. Until you have seen them in action you would never believe it. I am glad that i no longer live down there.
One thing i do know is the press never....repeat never give accurate information on events in the papers or the news....
I myself have been in the press and can speak from personal experience on this one...couldn't even get our names correctly spelt!!!!!!! The news will be to cause as much trouble...in fact i think incite more trouble which then leads to trouble makers attending these events. Lets just hope that something gets sorted and quickly to sort this mess out.0 -
Rehab my reply was not rude at all. I asked you please don't consider a cracked skull as okay. I thought I was very polite to you actually. I did not attack you at all.
I didn't delete my post.
My brother and his friend were totally innocent and got caught up in a demonstration as a result his friend died from a blow to his head. He was a lovely, gentle man and somebody's son.

I have not had a post removed Rehab. Are you confusing me with somebody else? At no point have I attacked you but I disagree that a cracked skull is okay. I do not like to see anyone hurt or attacked even royalty and police. I remember the awful murder of Keith Blakelock. I have mentioned the events of 1974 because they have been swept under the carpet and todays events remind me of the horror of riots and how innocent people get caught up in them.
