Walk bout 30 mins a day. eat 3 meals a day, only have light snacks, drink plentyof orange juice or any other fruit juice. DO NOT skip a meal! always check the calories and count them up.
I started doing this wen i put weight on and i have lost a stone in a month.
you can treat yourself now and then but only twice a month (like with mcdonalds or chinese).I ♥ Runrig.

well we all know how, it just sticking to it.
can you go swimming it the best exercise, if not get a step counter and try to add extra each day will give you something to work on. cut out fats and sugar, much easyer said than done but we will be with you each step od the way good luck valval0 -
Trouble is i cant walk far i seem to get a lot of pain in my back and knees, and i love swimming we have two pools near us but whats annoying is they are given over to the schools or reduced to three lanes you cant stop in the lanes and im not a strong swimmer, and theres me saying how i need to lose weight ive just had ....Angel delight :oops:0

Angel Delight: a packet of chemicals mixed with a liquid designed to feed baby cows. Hmmmmm. But it tastes good! Dieting is a straightforward process: eat less, move around more. The first part is reasonably straightforward, the second harder when one's mobility is compromised. One of the ways I aim to lose weight is by ditching the steroids. It's a starting point - would it work for you? I am devoting 2011 to doing just that (there's no real rush and I want it to work). Mind you, I lost about 3.5 stone a couple of years ago and gained no benefit arthritis-wise from it, but I did feel 'better' about myself. I wish you well. It isn't easy. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi Katnapp
I have a friend who is on steroids and she has to watch her weight too. It is an unfortunate side effect of steroids. She said she would like to eat all the time but disciplines herself. She is not very overweight. When she has mentioned the weight problem to her doctor, he said wouldn't you rather be a little overweight but have your RA under control, than the other way around?
Could you do some knitting or similar, to take your mind off eating. You can do exercises, sitting in a chair if walking is painful. If you do feel peckish, try to eat fruit to fill the gap until your next meal. Use a smaller plate than you usually do at mealtimes.
I wish you well with this,
Luv

Hi Katknapp
I don't think that any crash diets work in the long run. Usually, the weight piles back on eventually because diets aren't sustainable after a period of time. It's better to eat healthily, and to cut down on the amount.
Arthritis Care have some excellent publications on healthy eating and exercise which I think you can download from this site.
Click on Publications at the top of the Home page, then Self-management, and then Healthy Lifestyle.

Last January I went to my Nan in-laws 90th birthday, when we got home I checked out the pictures ............. I was mortified at what I seen. I had no idea I had gotten so big.
The very next day, I joined WW online .............. best thing I did. I lost 2 stone and was really pleased. Unfortunately over the festive period I have put some back on so I have just started again.
Swimming is a brilliant exercise to do

Hi kat
My sis lost 6 and half stone starting new years day two years ago.
She actually started by just not eating rubbish (got rid of it from the house) and walking (she has arthritis too) just teeny teeny bit evrey day. this grew to a bit more until she is where she is today.
I am very proud of her and amazed that she did it with the arthritis too.
Finally the docs do stop blaming her weight for her health issues.
WW is s great idea too. Motivating it is.
Love

I have also put on 3 and a half stone since going on methotrexate and now find I am comfort eating (I need a lot of comforting). It is really about cutting down and watching what you eat. Not easy I know.Personally I need the discipline of a weight loss programme to make sure I am doing the right thing but OH scoffs(no pun intended) at them as a waste of money.
I did do hydrotherapy in the summer. It is a lovely way to exercise and as most people in the class are in a similar boat the pace is relaxed too and we all helped each other. You could ask your rheummy nurse to put you forward for a hydrotherapy class if there is one in your area. No harm in asking.
Best of luck,

I was thinking of asking the doctor if i could ditch the steroids,i do actually discipline myself over what i eat as i feel so hungry all the time, the extra wieght seems to be very noticable on me i think because i am only small, im unfortunatly one of those people that seem to gain wieght just by not moving around,i think swimming seems to be the best option for me,i will just have to stop and annoy everyone in the lanes lol ,oh and thank you Tinkerbell but im not so young and certainly dont think of myself as overly sweet i will be 43 on saturday0

try to loose 1 or 2 pounds a week slow but sure you will keep it off then when i get my head together will loose some my self do not do the swimming as scared of not being able to get out of the pool   the water bit on the cold side and got steps but will walk more and stop eating the rubbishval0

Hi Katnapp,
Some good advice has already been given, but whatever you do please don't go on the diet that involves only drinks and the occasional nutrition bar. My friend did that - it's very expensive and once you stop, the weight will just pile back on.
Good luck.

Hi again, Like DD when I was low weight(7 stone) my Arthritis was worse. Extra weight does put strain on the joints though as they keep telling me so it is good to lose some but it probably won't help the arthritis very much. However it will make you feel better about yourself so that is a positive thing.
I had one bit of toast this morning instead of the usual 2-4 bits I normally consume. I am just going to watch and think about everything I eat.

I've lost a stone and a quarter in the last three months by just cutting down the amounts on the plate . It is certainly not easy especially as I am a wheelchair user and can't move much , I only manage to lose about a pound a week but slow and steady as they say ! I wish you lots of luck with your weight loss , I'm sure you will be successful . Jilly0

Did you remove my post about the Daily M newspaper and it's article?
others mention slimming clubs by name or use a recognisable psuedonom(sp) and is they have lost weight. You do make me bl**dy cross sometimes! And no message to let me know it had been removed.
I am trying to help people who want to lose weight and I am not endorsing/selling anything.

Hi Elizabeth, There was no message because we didn't remove your post. Sometimes when two people post only one of the posts make it to the forum. could it have been that? I have checked through all the mods handovers from 3rd January on, and found no mention of you, or this thread.
Hope this helps,

thanks for getting back so soon Jean.Thought I had posted and read it on here but obviously not and after all that hard work to write it. I do get hassled by the kids when posting so possibly it didn't submit. Thanks

Just reading through the comments. My poor hubby has to loose weight but bless him he finds it so hard. We call it healthy eating because as soon he hears the word diet he heads for the kitchen.
So we have have now nearly got ride of of the Xmas goodies because we had the whole family across. Once they have been finished off we will start again. His main problem is he does not always have breakfast and our portions are a little generous. (might need to buy new plates -small ones). So please to hear you have lost weight...slow and steady is the best way. I think it is more of a life style change and re-educating yourself. Must admit i don't help...i have no weight problem and can eat like a horse. Good luck to everyone with their new healthy eating.0 -
well my big plans for a healthy new start have gone to pot! ive been ill in bed with flu and ear infection in both ears so ive not felt up to eating at all,so fingers crossed once im back on my feet i will try again!!!Thank you everyone for your advice,im investing in smaller plates as that seems a very good idea............i asked my doctor for some advice he said that portion size should be no bigger than the palm of your hand...im only 5ft2 and i have very small hands and feet therefore i am going to starveeeeee!0
-
No, you're not gong to be hungry, your hands are the right size for you. I think you need to change your mindset! Never skip breakfast, chew each mouthful at least thirty times, put your flatware down in between each mouthful - these are all little steps that help one to eat properly and feel 'fuller'. Stick a picture of Paul Mason (I think that's his name, he who ate 20,000 calories per day, aided and abetted by our local health authority, but claimed that at 70 stone he didn't know he was fat) on your fridge: if that doesn't stop you snacking on the bad stuff, nothing will. I was advised by my GP to fill my plate as normal , then remove a quarter of every item on the plate . Quite effective , but the dog tends to put on weight ! Jilly0

Drink a glass of water before you eat...fills you up so you do not eat so much. You can use this when you feel hungry as well but it close to the toilet....0

Muscle weighs four times the weight of fat, so you can be extremely fit, well and muscular and still be classified as morbidly obese. Bone density also makes the theory unsustainable as denser ie. healthier, stronger bones equals higher BMI.
BMI was 'invented' by a Belgian, Jacques Quetelet during 1844 by measuring 5000 Scottish soldiers, (NOT a normal cross-section of society) which skewed the figures all over the place and rendered them totally useless if compared to well fed, modern day people.
So beware of using BMI as a scale of whether you are overweight or fit. I decided to toss a coin to see if I was fat or not, it took 6 goes before I got the right answer. Not fat, just heavy boned.

Hi Katt
I too have put on for too much weight, mainly from lack of exercise due to arthritis, eating too much due to being miserable with pain etc. I lost about 3 stone a few years ago and I felt so good about myself. I did WW but didnt go to meetings etc just counted points. Trick i found was to plan ahead. make meals way before time so you just heat them up. I know all the tricks I just cant do it this time! Good luck and keep me posted. im hoping you might inspire me!
