I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi folks...
I am back home.... Thanks for coming with
For those of you who were in the pockets but talking too much to hear what was said.. LOL

Here's what the physio fella said about my knees at the appointment today...

Let's see if I can remember... lol

My right knee has no osteo changes, the left one has calcium deposits and some changes, but both have infamation... So it is that that is causing the pain.. He would have normally referred me to the rheumy folks but I have an appointment to see them on the 18th of this month anyway, he wants me to wait and see what they say they can do, he said they would usualy try steroid injections first but as I have recently had two lots in fairly quick succession without great results doubts they will want to do more.. He said that they may refer me for a surgical consulatation for the left knee but if they don't I can ring him up and he will do that for me straight away..
He used a term for the calcium in the left knee, it wasn't osteochondritis (had that before) but I can't remember what it was & I forgot to ask him to write it down  I have rung him and left a message for him to ring me back so I can ask him about it again..
He did say that it's looking more likely to be rheumatoid rather than osteo in my knees... Oh joy of joys, lol...
So now, I must wait to see the rheumy nurse, Janet is coming with me for that though, I have made sure, cos I won't know what to ask or remember what they say... Haha

So at the minute, not much planned as yet... Let's hope the Rheumy's are willing to do something and soon... Can hardly walk because of the pain... Still smiling though....

Thanks again folks, and will you come with me on the 18th please, but this time keep the noise down, I know some of you like to natter, typical wimmin folks, lol..

    Cheers

Infamy infamy my knees have got it in for me.

Well Tony i'm sure you meant inflammation but whatever they hurt.Personally I think R.A is better than OA as my R.A knees are fine-A1-with my anti-TNF's. OA is in my ankle and bloomin hurts. My knees are inflammed so that is why they hurt at the mo, due to lack of my anti-TNF.

Steriods worked well for me but didn't last.I had a drain at the same time.

So onto the 18th and hopefully something will be suggested that will help.In the meantime try and get as much rest as possible.
Are you on any anti-tnf's already?

Oh gawd. Are you another possible recruit for the meth band? This could be your chance to find out about all these wonderful meds some of us ingest and inject. Oh Tony, I so bloody hope it isn't RA, I really do. Inflammation is painful - do your knees feel hot? Are they swollen? The inflammation is likely to be in the synovial lining of the joint - that's the case with me anyway, I over-produce synovial fluid hence the puffy hot joints. Are they hurting more since he prodded and pulled etc? Have they got any fatter? Oh bloody hell mate, sometimes it just doesn't end. DD

PS Unlike tkachev, given the choice between PA and OA I would opt for OA every time. No foul meds to take (that don't do much anyway) and perhaps some shiny new joints at some point. No contest. Typically human, yes? We always want what we don't have!

    Hi tony
Seems like you gathered quite a lot of info there. Lets hope then that the rhummy peeps on the 18th can suggest something now that they will also have the xray results.
Will be in your pocket again .....and yes I will listen next time.....will even take a note pad................ It was ball in yer pocket lots of goodies and soft drinks and a real good chin wag.

Rest now as you are probably whacked, and go easy on the knees till the 18th.
    Take care

    Hi Elizabeth & DD..
Well it is what it is eh?
I am not on any Anti doo-dah's, just pain meds and anti inflammy wotsits..

Thing is I have never had swollen knees or hot oes either, in fact the extreme opposite, my knees (and feet too) are always painfully cold.. No matter what the weather etc..
I am not going to worry about what happens though, could be that they can sort them out with some miracle med or other, lol...
I definately think I will push for an arthroscopy on the left though, even if it is RA the calcium deposits still need removing eh?

There was no prodding and jiggery pokery done today, thankfully. I got taxi there and back though just in case, dint fancy driving with the knees being like they are, especially if there was a chance of them playing jenga with my legs..

    Such is life, and.................................

    Hi Tony,
I'm glad you got some answers of sort! Let's hope the Rheumy nurse can shed further light and get you started on something to help relieve the inflammation. I'm at my Rheumy nurse as well on 18th to start my Humira jabs, so will be ready to swap pockets! My knee has decided to calm down a bit, no idea why, other than was marched by my Grandma into the freezing cold sea this weekend while visiting on the Isle of Wight! Long nay it last!
Rest now because I'll bet your exhausted

You won't be on any anti TNFs yet, no, not until they know what it is and if your trust is anything like mine you won't be given them for a good few years until they have tried everything else under the sun! If your knees are not hot or puffy then perhaps that is a good thing - I base inflammation on what my knees did, perhaps with an RA thing it's different. Honestly mate, you don't want it, it's all rubbish but RA is more rubbish than some of the others.

An arthroscopy is a good idea, obviously the anti inflammatories are not doing much to help so perhaps changing those might be an option (I always found Celebrex the best so was taken off them, too expensive for my GP apparently, bloody typical!) One stage at a time, yes? 11 days until your next appointment - it's in my diary! DD
