what will you start? Lent is traditionally seen as a time of denial - people give up their favourite foods, stop drinking, decide not to do whatever gives them pleasure for the forty days. I think, however, it can also be seen as a time to start something positive for those forty days, and for me I am going to resume my clatter round the block. One short walk per day - and no rests allowed. That's the aim. DD

Good idea of yours to do something positive and I hope you can keep up the short walk even after lent.

    I have to now......I have promised.......Thankyou.

I think you are nearly there: the Old English is 'lencten' which came from the Germanic related to 'long' and led to our word 'Lenten'. It's now used as an adjective, eg Lenten fare. DD

Think I will give up expecting things at my appointments to be straight forward
Can't really give up food any more than I have done recently, I don't drink booze, don't smoke... Not much else I could give up.. Lol
So I will do like DD & think of something positive to do..
Maybe like Julie I should crack on with my Spanish... Might be going back come September..

I think chocolate should be the thing I give up but don't think I could manage for 40 days.

I've given up dairy and wheat (I'd already made a start on the dairy a couple of weeks ago) and planning on making it fairly permenant (unless my RA gets worse then all bets are off!

But I think taking up somthing as well is a great idea!
Mind if I join you for a stumble round the block DD I'm just going to finish my salad then I'll get my shoes on.

May try thinking of something else to take up as well...

I like the idea of doing something positive, DD. It's strange though because I can think of lots of things I really should give up ( I'm a chocoholic for a start ) but it's harder to think of something more positive. There's no point in choosing something too difficult because I would only lose interest and give it up after a while. One thing I could do is to have a good clear-out of my wardrobe, and then stop buying any new clothes during Lent. I love nice clothes, but I've got far too many as it is. I'm a good candidate for Gok, I think

I got out for a walk too, and very refreshing (windswept) it was too.

Lets try keeping it up for forty days in a row!

Good idea DD .... Was thinking on my way home how stressed I've been recently and how everything is getting a bit much, work, home disasters, husband , health are all beating up on me so taking a positive way forward for the next 40 days I am going to do something small for me each and everyday ... Not something I NEED to do for somebody but something for me that I want to do not need, these things have all been postponed so long I think I've forgotten what they are (may sound a little selfish but I think I need a little selfish to restore a little balance in my life before I go crazy ). I hope that the overall effect will be positive for everybody as I won't then snap one day soon and lose the plot
Right now I just need to work out something for today....

Spot on cthornley. Why the hell not? The Cardiologist (who is probably a lovely fellow) does not seem to do much to cheer you and the young 'un is too small to do so (tho to see him staggering around proabably does help) so why not treat yourself to something tiny every day for forty days? You go girl, you need it and deserve it. DD

Tink? I have taken to putting my nightie in the freezer for about 30 minutes before bed time. Bliss. It is cold - briefly. I soon melt it! DD

I am not very good at giving things up for lent never have been even as a child.(my nephew 25yrs gives up alcohol every year for lent and never fails)
I usually take all my small change out of my purse every night cos I struggle to fiddle with coins and save it, and in Dec exchange it for notes and use it towards christmas presents. This year during lent it will be saved up to put towards the sponsorships my church does for school children in Africa. I will let you know how much I have saved up at Easter.

Day three of the big totter for Lent. It will be done at the seaside, later on today. Days four, five and six of the big totter will be done in the same location. That will help me to do it, I am sure. Good luck to the rest of my fellow staggerers! DD
