Hi Everyone
I posted on here over the weekend asking for good luck as had appointment at Wrightington this morning at 08.45. This was to see my second opinion man who i have seen twice before but last time i saw him he didnt give me encouragement as in he told me i needed to lose weight but he didnt say or i didnt ask what that was......Ive since gone on a diet and lost 6 pounds which i see as a step in the right direction.......
I went this morning and dad was with me too bless him......Off we set at 07.25am on the motorway (I live in lake district, hopsital is in wigan).....Our journey went okay till we got near our turn off and there was a slight jam...I was needing the loo and getting a bit desperate but we made it at just 08.40.....
Didnt get taken on time but seen at 09.35....And when we went in got a warm handshake off him....He took time today to ask what weight id been at dietitan, what height and i asked him what is it that he calls "reasonable weight loss" as id only been told this before and not of 2 stone or more would have to be achieved.....I told him id already lost the six pounds and he said that was a great start. He surprised me and told me if i lost 15kilograms then i could come and see him and TKR would definitely be right for me......I was concerned as my notes from other consulatant (who im complaining about) had made me look bad but he explained that he had a mind of his own and wasn interested in how Mr ... had described me.....Mr ... had wanted to remove my kneecap...I was told today i have stage 4 damage on my medial and under kneecap and have stage 1 on lateral side of knee...Hence removing kneecap would only have removed one diseased part, never helping me ever, ever.......
I feel better and am sure i can achieve my weight loss, even if it takes me longer, i will do it....
The consultation ended with him telling me "we are on your side, and not all against you at all".......Which was nice and he shook our hands very warmly......So im optimistic, he mentioned a cross training exercise may help me lose weight, will have to ask about that.....
Id like to say a very big thanks to everyone who sent lovely messages on here.....I would try and name everyone but at the risk of not including a name and upsetting the apple cart can i just say thanks very, very much it does mean a lot to me to have mental strength through you all...Its a tonic......Also my dad wont read this but DAD YOURE GREAT!!!!!!IM LUCKY TO HAVE YOU.....He is actually on the road upto inverness to see my sister who is in hospital, we think she may have a superbug, it started off with cellulitis and she hasnt ever got any better.....So he put his other daughter's needs aside for me, not many would have done so.....
Im blabbing but hey look a million thank you's......

I'm so glad for you Elaine, I know how low you got after the last consultation and was worried for you. How fab is your Dad? Good luck with your continued weight loss and hey, well done you for thinking positive, standing your ground and going back, plenty would have given up. Thinking of you and thinking of your poor sister, hugs Poppy X'grá agus solas'

Elaine that's so positive for you
It will certainly spur you on to lose even more weight. A TKR always wants a thin little person to support, lol
Very best of luck for the future

I have the headache from hell today but logged in hoping you had a better appointment and you did. Things are going in the right direction at last. I feel a little sad the onus is on you to lose weight as this is not an easy thing to achieve although 6 pounds is a marvelous start.
I am really happy for you Elaine,

Elaine I am sooo happy for you, by sheer determination you have got them to listen to you as a person and not a NHS number...I am so proud of you, and others reading your story will get inspiration from it.
And losing the weight will be alot easier now you have a target, wish they would give me one.
Good luck with everything and I hope your sister recovers very soon.

Well yes it is good news isnt it, just a shame it was a protracted process but nonetheless i got a positive result....
Thanks for hoping my sister gets better, news is now she has gout but it changes on a daily basis what is wrong with her, but hopefully she will start recovering and fighting back too..

Hi Julie
Yes i am very happy that they did listen to me and heard that i needed a bit of guidance, an incentive if you like, target to aim for...Its so nice to feel cared for and like i matter...
I will get there, determined to....
Thanks, lots for your message....

Hi Barbara
Yes youre right i dont feel like a number, im now someone who will get a TKR and it will be a lot of my own doing.....Its been a hard and dark road at time and i didnt think i would get to how i am just now but my gp's comments about me being negative instead of being encouraging spurred me on....So I guess i have her to thank in a weird way...
I was just mentioning you to dad this morning saying how nice and sincere you had been in offering support and i really mean it.......I hope maybe some good vibes can come your way and maybe you will have good news for us soon? You sure as heck deserve it......
Thanks for asking after my sister, she's having a rough time and cos she's a qualified sister she knows she isnt right but she isnt in control of her treatment, scary really? She too has wonderful support up there, her children and my other sister who works on the floor above her can drop anything off to her at the drop of a hat....
Sending you big thanks Barbara and hope your situation takes a good turn......

Hi Elaine
I am so pleased that you had a more positove consultation. I`m sure you were nervous after last times experience. Well done on the step in the right direction re the weight loss. I would be interestd to know who you see at Wrightington as I have seen 3 Consultants there and have a very nice one now (which is always a good thing!)
Good luck with the continued weight loss and for the future .

Phew Elaine what a relief!
I'm so pleased you had such a good outcome and you're a different girl to how you were some months ago. Just shows that as we were all in your pocket he had to be nice, he wouldn't dare be otherwise.
Well done on the loss of 6lbs . I've just converted 15 Kilogrammes into old money and though it's a way to go I know you'll do it because not only will you feel better in yourself you have another good reason to lose it. Less weight on your knees will be so beneficial to you.
Keep us informed on how you're doing and I say again I'm really happy for you.Love, Legs x

So pleased you got something positive from today and how amazing is your dad . He must be very proud that you have handled this so well , keep going with the weight loss , you've done very well so far ; not easy to lose any weight when you can't exercise is it ? Hope your sister is getting on ok . Jillyb0

Hi NB
I was awful nervous to be honest and when we didnt get taken on time i was twitching in my chair in the waiting room as i knew the longer we spent there the longer it held my dad up going upto scotland too...I was like a hen on a hot girdle as he would say!
Im going to PM you the name of my consultant as we're not allowed to name them on here are we?
Its positive baby steps but its forward and im happy with it....
Thanks for the future weight loss wishes ....May need them at times!!!

Hi Legs
Yeah phew sums it up pretty much eh...Think I went sort of prepared for an uphill battle but he isnt at all like my first consultant who wanted to remove my kneecap, maybe my nerves played a part in last appointment and thats why i knew nothing...And yes i couldnt see a way out last december, not in a suicidal way or anything but was consigned to being like this until i met my 60's or croaked it...It wasnt nice and as nobody gave me trinkets of incentives i didnt see how things would change....The turning point was my gp saying i was negative, she was wrong as i wasnt and i will prove her wrong even more....
And yes you know i could feel all the wrigglers jostling about in pockets and sure i saw some little dude nip into my bag too where my mobile normally sits ;-)
My weight loss will take a while but hey ive started now and at least i havent a mountain to climb ie 4 or 5 stone i can lose 2 stone, thats reasonable and im determined to do it......I need to and it wont do my overall helalth any harm at all...
Thanks again for all your support its really fab........

Hi Jilly
Well yes i feel ive handled it quite well...I mean older members of forum who knew me last year will know i was devastated last december, i didnt even want to celebrate christmas, i felt like i was designated to the proverbial scrapheap so ive come a long way, a bumpy one too but i can see my destinantion and though its far away i will get there.....
My dad is great, he himself has a TKR and THR and he is wonderful, he does anything for whoever he can, he was up in the loft getting cases for his journey today and last week he was fixing my mums friends tap which meant him lying on his non THR side in order to turn valve off and no moans he just gets on with it.....He can also see how much i nearly fall over, have daily pain and have dieted - when he dishes out the dinner i put less on my plate, dont always eat what they have and refuse fatty things such as trifles and crumbles, sticking to my soya yogurt and fruit....
The latest on my sister is gout but her condition has changed so much in the past few weeks no diagnosis seems to stay the same, its like they dont know what theyre dealing with.....Mum and dad will lift her spirits, dad will kid her on cos thats what he does and mum will fuss and look after her son and my brother in law....
Thanks for your lovely messages, been a dam good day today but boy am i whacked!!!!

Hi Barbara
Well yes i dont think people realise that its good to hear from others who have sort of the same as yourself, it makes you feel less isolated....The horrid consultant i saw last year criticised me for using this here place as i initially sought it to find out kneecap removal success rate and he wrote in a letter "I dont think this site will help her, she will not do well"....Well excuse me but yes it does and maybe you should come see how good it is....
I know what you mean about gaining confidence, it took a while to get back mine again but im glad its here now.....Oh heck you off on a sunday eh....And a trailer but surely a dam well equipped trailer (think the scanner at out local hopsital is same thing, see it parked up)....
I am going to put the date in my phone and wish you good luck for next sunday, tell me what time and will send you a little virtual ug!!! All digits crossed you get some good news.....
And you know what you said about inspiration well back at you kid!!!
