Hi
Does anyone that has arhtur of there hips suffer from sciatic pain, I dont want to go back to my GP has I am seeing a back specialist at the weekend, and my hip consultant next week
He has trebled my gabapentin and my pain meds, but nothing is touching it.
The pain is in my back, hip and down my leg, I also have numb patches on my foot.
I have looked it up on the net and the nearest thing coming up is sacrollitis.
Its so painful whatever it is.
Thankyou in advance

suzygirl has posted about sacrolitis I think. I can't help, sorry barbara12  . I don't have hips - well, I do, obviously, just not affected ones. I can understand why you don't want to go back to the GP - if he was he the one that trebled the gab and dullers surely he needs to know that this has not worked. I don't do this often so brace yourself: ((((())))) DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi, it sounds as though you have something pressing on a nerve. Especially if you have numb patches on your feet. It is a good job you are seeing the specialists soon. I am not sure what is causing my back, groin, hip pain. It does travel down my legs and around my back. The fact painkillers arent touching it, is horrible. Must admit mine aren't touching my pain at the moment either.
Your gp can prescribe other painkillers for you, you shouldn't be worried about going back. I am sure they would rather see you than have you suffer.
I am sitting with my hot water bottle at the moment, although that sets off the sweats. Mine is def arfur I am sure as I have a temp again, and my other joints are protesting as well.
Hope you get some answers!!0 -
I had terrible bouts of Sciatica which was caused by spinal stenosis( narrowing of the channel that the nerve sits in as it passes near the spine) I had the narrowing scraped out and it seemed to fix the problem. It caused numbness and hip pain but I also had to have a hip-replacement done a couple of years later and the Sciatica came back in the months when I was waiting for the surgery on my hip. Must say I haven't had any more bouts of it since but I found the best way to ease the pain was doing some stretching exercises(the sciatic nerve) that my physio showed me how to do. It was painful but did ease the pain after a couple of hours.. I still do it now if I ever get a twinge..Our worst times are always our best lessons.0

Hi Barbara.
I have bilateral sacroiliitis caused by arthritic inflamation and you have described exactly the symtoms that I went through. I could not walk sit lay or sleep. Was given tramadol and gabapentin which didnt appear to work. Had a morphine injection cocodomol followed three hours later by bottle of liquid paracetamol and still nothing touched it. After no sleep for 4 days and nights collapsed on bed and ccrashed out for nearly 24 hours. When I woke up the pain started to ease.
Couldnt tell you what did the trick but when I showed the A&e doctor the gabapentin he said to go home and carry on taking those and it should start to kick in a couple of days later. I rather think that the morphine, paracetamol coupled with exhaustion did it.
The most frustrating thing was that people appeared not to understand the immense pain that I was in.
Six months later on Enbrel and it seems to be working and the sacroiliitis seems to be kept in check.
Hope it helps in some way even from the point that people here understand what pain you are going through. Good Luck0 -

Barbara, I am sorry to hear that you are in so much pain.
I do agree with DD that you should tell the GP that the meds are not working I know a lot of Gp's are not very sympathetic but if you don't tell him then he can't try something else. My GP has increased my gabapentin to help with hip pain and burstis in the leg he had to increase the meds 4 times ( i now take 600mg 3 times a day) it still hurts but is a bt more managable at them moment he did say he could increse it yo 1200mg 3 times a day if needed. I am not sure what dose you are on but he maybe able to help.
The other thing that helps me is my favourite hot water bottle i use it so much i have to get a new one every year.
I hope things start to get better for you soon

Hi Barb, been doing a bit of googling. It seems as though if there is inflammation in the area it can irritate the nearby nerves and cause pain. Will be interesting to see what your specialists say!!0

Hello..I'm new here and have been reading everyones comments..I have FAI and the pain is in my left lower back, pain and grinding in Hip and pain goes to my knee and to the ball of my foot..I'm so not sure whats happening but can't wait to see Ortho DR. next week..I'm glad you are all here..0

Hi Barbara.. Hope the sciatica has eased.. The only thing that I find helps when I get it is sedative of some decision description.. I usually take to my pit with a tamazapam, tends to have helped by the time I wake up, must relax the spasm that is going on.. I used to do extension exercises that did ease things a bit, basically a press up but you keep your hips flat to the bed, when your arms are fully extended hold for a second, deep breath in... Obviously I can't recommend you do these just in case but those were the exercises my physio have me to do every time the sciatica hit... Can't do them now due to my hands and wrists being so painful...
Best wishes....
And welcome to the newbie sunnydaze...

I have sciatica from time to time due to a bulging disc that popped out after childbirth.
Sciatic pain feels like it runs down a thread, which is basically the nerve, and when it is at its worst it will go into the feet and sometimes can make the foot numb. It also is worse when you stand up after having been sat down a while.
If it is because something is pressing on a nerve then keep a check on your posture when you are standing and sitting.
My sciatica has nothing to do with my arther so not sure if I have been much help.Jean-Mary

Hi and sorry I have not been on for a couple of days
I just want to say a big thankyou to DD, Suzygirl, Tanith, Ironic, Sullivt, Elaine, Tracy, Katie, Mp1952, Sunnydaze, Tony, Joan, and JeanMary.
.Well I went back to my GPs like some of you said, he took my temperature and prescribe me antibiotics , he said I might have an infection somewhere, and he has put me on 900mg of gabapentin and told me to take more cocodamols, I am not so sure about taking more paracetamol.
The pain is Horrendous, he has told me to mention all this when I go to see them on Sunday.
I mentioned the sacroiliitis joint, and he said maybe that is were the infection is.
Thankyou all so much for your help and advice
Love

Oh no, not an infection - could that be as a result of the hip injections? I certainly hope not and I hope the antibios and pain dullers take effect soon. Oh barbara12, it's one damn thing after another sometimes, yes? I hope you feel better/brighter soon. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

For me it went right down into my foot and ultimately, just before surgery Barbara, l 'lost' my entire leg. despite surgery i still cant feel part of my foot and behind knee and b*m cheek!!
I really do hope you get to the bottom of it very very soon. This is so NOt trivial is it?
Love and hugs

(((Barbara))) what a good job that you went back to the gp!! Lets hope the antibiotics work quickly for you. Keep up with the painkillers, and get plenty of rest.

Hi Barbara, I am sorry you are suffering so much it sounds agonising. I hope you get some help at your forthcoming appointment.
Treating your trigger points can help sciatica, it isn't instant but can't make it worse and at least you are doing something/trying something.
The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook
Your Self-Treatment Guide for Pain Relief by Clair Davies is a very useful book and describes how. If you google you can find out more.
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Thanks Speedy I was after that too

Hi Barbara,
late as ever but glad your cooling down and hope the combination of the antibiotics and the increase in the gabapentin helps you. Leaving a (((( )))) and a hope. Cris xx0
