Elna's Three toes - two weeks post op

 In case anyone is interested in my toe op saga, today I had all the wadding and bandages removed and also the stitches from five places where he broke the bone and two xrays. Comparing the old and new xray was interesting for me to see. Consultant was very pleased with the outcome and said the operation had not taken too long to perform. The wire is to be left in for a further two weeks when I see him again. I commented that the wire looked rather long and he said it has to be to keep the toe straight. I shall keep it as a souvenir - it will have lived in my toe for 4 weeks after all. I cannot say I am looking forward to having it removed but if I do not look I shall be OK. I still have to wear the "boot" and keep my foot flat when walking, no bending of the toes. Broken bones take 6 weeks to mend so he told me. So that is that until I see him again. I am pleased with the outcome so far and he seemed to be too.

    Hello Elna
Im so glad that they are pleased with how it is healing, it must feel so much different getting rid of all the padding.
Now this wire.. suppose it will be a good talking point when anyone comes round.....but I don't think they would come back  .
Time is moving on , and before you know it you will be chasing little Lola around.
Wishing you well with it all

Thank you Barbara, Ron and Kath,

I am not sure if I will "do" anything with the wire but I can show it to some of the family at least and make them squirm a bit.

So a couple more weeks of baths with said foot hanging over the edge of the bath. It is a bit precarious getting in and out of the bath, probably by the time I am able to take showers again, I will have got this manoevre down to a fine art :lol:

    Hi Elna

So glad the consultant was pleased with your progress.
xrays....you know I can never see what they are looking at.....They point things out, but to me they are like those magic pictures where you stare till you see an image

    Hi Elna!

Glad to hear things are progressing well after your operation.

As usual I am a bit behind the ball and didn't realise until just now that you had gone off and had your toes straightened - I sympathise with how you must be feeling at the moment, it's all a bit sore and awkward no doubt. I hope they continue to mend well and you are back on your feet in no time (pardon the pun!)

I had two of my toes wired a few years ago. Wasn't much fun wearing corks on the end of my toes but the good news is they are much better for it now!

    Hi Elna,
Good news that you have got rid of all the padding, I am sure you will be so upset to lose the “boot” very fetching I have been informed.
Well I suppose the wire would be handy for fishing hooks or just stick to the squirming theme.

    Hi Elna

That's great news about your toes.. I remember one of my colleagues having those wires in her toes and I could not bear to look at them... They really made me cringe!!!

    Best wishes

You know I had imagined the wire to be next to your toe but now I am wondering if it is through it! And is it a thick piece or a thin wire? In any case I am pleased that everything is going well.

    Best wishes

    Hi Julie

Thank you for your good wishes. I am the same with xrays usually but with my "before" and "after" foot xrays, I could definitely see the great improvement. Even you would have done! I may well thread some beads onto the wire - that is a good idea.

    Hi Arna

I am pleased to hear that your "wired" toes were a success. Did you keep the wires as a souvenir? The awkward part I find is concentrating on not bending the toes so am walking a little oddly .... and slowly. I do not have much pain at all now - only the first three days did my foot complain rather.

Good to see you on the forum in the past couple of days.

    Hi Ironic

You are right, I shall not be sorry to lose the boot but definitely have to wear it for 4 weeks at least making it 6 weeks in all. That is another good idea, a fishing hook, this wire has no end of uses.:lol:

    Hi Marion,

I would more than likely cringe too if I saw the wire in someone else's toe(s) but I do not feel that way as it is my own toe - strange that!

    Dear Elizabeth and Toni,

The wire goes in through the centre of the top of the toe and disappears. On the xray I could see exactly how far it went down into my toe and a little beyond too or that is what it looked like. I mentioned it to the consultant and he said, well it has to be long to keep the toe straight. I said will that hurt when you remove it. He said no. I said how do you know you probably have never had a wire through your toe! He did not reply

    Hi Hileena

 I am getting ideas from others as to what to do with this wire. Only having had one toe wired, there are limitations. I really want to keep it because it will have been part of me for 4 weeks. Perhaps I could use it as a hat pin but on the other hand perhaps not as I do not wear hats.

    Hi Elna,

    Glad your op went well.
As for the pins/wires I had those in my big toes when I had them done years ago (and I kept them) it doesn't hurt when they take them out.

    Hi Elna,

Late seeing this and glad its all going ok there. I am surprised they taking the wires out that soon cus mine were in 6 weeks. I guess its cus they took the joints out of mine and they were healing and knitting together differently?

I never once wanted the wires ... in fact having lost the corks they were something of a problem from the beginning  Horrible pain full things.....

You could twins it and use it as a hook? ((( ))) and a hope it all carries on going well and works Cris xx

ohh Elna, your op sounds rather grim! Are the pins and boot like those pins and frames people have on complex fractures when they break a limb? Good that the x-rays show your toes looking as they should.

Many thanks for saying that it does not hurt when the wire/ pin is taken out. My consultant said the same but I was not sure if to believe him, but I do believe you,as you have had it done and you kept the pins too. I shall too but I will have only one to keep but I most definitely want to take it home with me

    Hi Hileena

I think with your pins and metal plate in your ankle I would have left them too as think the same as you if they are not bothering me they can stay.

Bit different with a pin sticking out the end of a toe, though, I would never be able to wear any shoes other than sandals!!
