It's a while since we had any questions about ourselves on here, so I thought I would post a few. I would be interested to read your replies to all or just some of them.

1. Where were you born, and where did you grow up?

2. Do you have a regional accent?

3. If you could choose to live anywhere in the British Isles, where would you choose and why?

4. What were your best and worst subjects when you were at school?

5. What did you do when you first left school?

6. What was the best/worst job you ever had?

7. What are your main interests/hobbies?

8. What talent do you wish you possessed?

9. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?

10. Which famous person ( living or dead ) would you like to meet and why?

Here's my own answers to the questions:

    1. Where were you born, and where did you grow up?

I was born in Rotherham, S.Yorkshire, where I lived until I left for London when I was 18.

    2. Do you have a regional accent?

My accent is a mixture of Yorkshire and Derbyshire, where I now live.

    3. If you could choose to live anywhere in the British Isles, where would you choose and why?

I would choose Cornwall or the Lake District because both are beautiful areas.

    4. What were your best and worst subjects when you were at school?

My best subjects were English and French; my worst subjects by far were Maths and Chemistry.

    5. What did you do when you first left school?

I went to London to train as a teacher.

    6. What was the best/worst job you ever had?

My worst job was my first one in a junior school with a horrible bully of a headmaster. I nearly left teaching because of him. My best job was at a school in Nottingham with an inspirational headmaster who taught me an enormous amount.

    7. What are your main interests/hobbies?

My main interests are art/painting, ballet and the theatre.

    8. What talent do you wish you possessed?

I wish that I could play the piano, and also that I was a more confident driver.

    9. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?

I wish that all children in the world had food and an education.

    10. Which famous person ( living or dead ) would you like to meet and why?

Living-I would like to have a chat with the Queen, and ask her what she really thinks about all the different people she's met.

Dead- James Dean, the film star who was my idol when I was a teenager.

    1. Born in Hillingdon (not far from Poppygirl in fact!) and brought up in Beaconsfield, bucks.

    2. Usual Southern English.

    3. I wouold love to live in North Norfolk.

    4. Worst at maths, best at English.

    5. I went to university. (Mind you tjt is closer to the truth on that one!)

    6. Worst job was working in a laundry as a student. The best is (but now nearly was) my self-employment as a tutor for dyslexics.

    7. I like reading, doing brain-tesasing puzzles, beer and men.

    8. I would like to be able to paint.

    9. If I could change one thing? Ummmmmm, I would ensure this country of ours had at least five hours of sunshine every day.

    10. I honestly don't know. Jane Austen is a candidate (her novels are still relevant proving that folk don't change).

Thanks for your replies Tony, Jilly, and DD. It's interesting to find out a little more about you.

Tony- Emily Pankhurst would have ironed you flat for that reply to number 10 :lol::lol: It might make the limbo dancing a bit easier for you anyway

Jilly- It's funny how everyone else has an accent, isn't it? I guess that Brighton is a nice place to live.

DD- I like your idea of five hours of sunshine every day. It would make such a difference and everyone would be so much more cheerful.

I agree about North Norfolk as a nice place to live. I also love that area.

We had a short honeymoon in Blakeney, we know the coastline from Cromer to Hunstanton very well. Oddly enough I would like to live in Salthouse. I have no idea why, it just appeals! DD

    1. Huddersfield.

2.Yes, largely thanks to the nuns who tried their level best to eradicate it.

3.Here. (NW Leeds). Easy access to the Dales, lovely neighbours, good hospital consultants (Sad, I know, but when you go under the knife as often as I do….)

    4. Best – Spanish. Worst – I guess it has to be chemistry as I was chucked out of the class aged 13 as a danger to others.

    5. Uni and freedom.

    6. Best – I loved doing Christmas post as a student. Freedom (again), interesting people in outlying cottages. (“Just bung it on t’ lavvy seat, love. I’ll be down in a minute.”)
Worst – (Student again) selling ice cream in the market. When it was hot the boss made us tell kids we’d no 2p cones cos they’d buy bigger ones.

    7. Watching cricket. Writing anything. ‘Walking’ with the wheelchair.

    8. I’d have been captain and all-rounder for England’s women cricketers. In my spare time I’d have been good enough with the piano to play a concerto (Chopin, Tchaikovsky & Rachmaninov spring to mind) backed by full orchestra. (My middle name is Megalomania.)

    9. Get Mr SW to close drawers and cupboards and switch lights off after him. And occasionally wipe the loo seat.

    10. Chopin. To thank him for turning his pain into my solace.

I think, reading these, I've just had a eureka moment. It's patently obvious that the main cause of arthritis is a dislike of/inability to do maths. (I was pretty rubbish at it too - just even worse at chemistry.)

    Hiya joan

    I will begin haha

I was born in sunderland and have lived here all my life, people say that i have a very broad mackam accent i dont think i do haha, if i was to live anywhere in the british isles it would be the lake district i love to have a drive up there when im feeling down the views are fantastic.
My best subject at school was IT information technology my worst was maths and still is!!
when i first left school i went to do a YT youth training scheme at a shop, it was horrible along with the owner who had to be taken to court, it was a horrible time of my life anyway i got through that and with the help of my better half i went on to work in administration in the hospital.
The one talent i would love to have would be to make everyone better in the world and i suppose thats what i would change to, i would not like to see anyone in pain.
im not sure who i would like to meet.

    Joan,

It was a fantastic childhood although nocturnal as you worked all day and night and socialised after 10pm, still think that's why I am a night own and hate early mornings. Very hard life more a way of life than a business, not the same now though. Education was hard going to school for two weeks but we managed and seen and learnt a lot about life and people we always said 'street cred'. I woukd not go back now or want that life form my children as there or many more opportunities and fair people are very small minded and tunnel vision, I was unusual for marrying out of the business. I still have lots of friends and family on the fair and keep in touch with my best friends but no longer have much in common, after a couple of hours the conversation gets harder. Anything else you want to know ask away, I am very proud of my heritage and our head and all the kids I teach know about it which is always a talking point, ha ha. Xx

Anky, what an amazing childhood you had :!: It must have been quite hard for you at school when you were there for such short periods. Did you go to Goose Fair in Nottingham? I always loved that fair, and when I worked in Nottingham I used to take my class to the official opening every year. It's part of the history and tradition of Nottingham, so I thought that the children should know about it. I don't think I would take that risk these days though

    Hi Joan
I can draw well but have not mastered the art of painting so stick to pencil.
