 Here I am again  I have been on the phone and into town.

Aw, thank you all again and those that called in today too, and Julie carefully looking after Cris and making her comfortable and DD as well. I do hope that you are having a good few days away DD and it is very sweet of you to think of me.

Well, yes, Mr. Consultant was happy, Ian is happy as he took the whole day off work and the sun is shining atm and he is at the allotment, where he likes to be. I am happy that Mr. Consultant is happy and because now I only need to wear the dreaded collar when out in the big wide world or in the car. I did admit to him that I had not been wearing the collar in the home very much for the past week or so.

No cycling (or course), no going back to a couple of cleaning jobs I had, not for another 6 weeks anyway. He said it would be ok to use the feather duster :lol::lol: but not hauling a vacuum cleaner up and down stairs, so that is that.

We discussed any improvement in my symptoms since the operation and I replied they were the same. He explained to me that if other nerves were going to take on new roles in place of the ones that had been destroyed due to pressure of the two vertebrae on my spinal cord, before the op, then it could take 12 – 18 months for my brain/nerves to learn this. So there is a glimmer of hope out there that I may see an improvement in my gait and lose the pins and needles sensation in my hands, given time.

The consultant did smile a couple of times today  and appeared more relaxed at this appointment. I did shed a few tears the last time when sat the other side of his desk listening to the not so good news. This appointment was more upbeat. He did mention that as I was thin :?: (I would have preferred to hear the word slim :!:  ) the op had been very straightforward, the cut smaller, less anaesthetic used because op took less time resulting in a faster recovery.

So I see him in 6 weeks time, a day before my birthday.

A heartfelt thank you, once again, all you wonderful people. What would we do without each other? How did we manage before we found this forum?

    Love
    Elna x

Elna, it takes my brain 12-18 months to learn anything new and that's without the benefit of spinal surgery.

I pleased it went well and that he - kind of retrospectively? - gave you permission to leave off the collar. I remember the delight I felt when I could ditch the 'batting pad' I'd to wear after my knee revision. It dug into both ankle & groin and didn't do much for the bits in between either.

Well, another step completed; another hurdle jumped. I'm backing your brain to come up with the goods.

Elna..I am so pleased for you for you , can I just ask did they operate from your neck, I say this because we have a friend who has had the same done, 10 months ago...we hadn't seen him for over a year...so we didnt know about it.
His description was that his legs didn't feel like they knew what to do, and would go from under him...anyway I will get to the point..he has just gone back to work has a mechanic...so he is very pleased with his recovery.
You take care of yourself x

Aw Sticky, You do make me laugh. Thank you. My brain needs all the help it can get. I only have one brain cell and I polish it weekly and try to give it lots of TLC.

Hi Barbara, Yes, the surgeon went through my neck, a little to the left hand side than really central, moved my voice box to get to the spinal cord to do what he had to do. It is marvellous what they can do these days. I know that feeling well, with the legs not doing what you are “instructing” them to do but I have not actually fallen, thank goodness. It is reassuring to know that your friend has made a remarkable recovery. I wish him well. Thank you for telling me that. There is hope for me yet.

Any pics,Vonski? I know you are dying to see one of me in the collar. I may shock you one of these days and send you one via email. Watch this space!

Dear Val, thanks for your good wishes, I hope you are ok.

Trust you dear Sue. Hey, you have got our own lovely consultant, don’t be greedy, blowing kisses and I thought he was smiling at me! I am sorry you are feeling so tired. Perhaps you should give in to it and sleep. There is nothing worse than laughing/coughing when ribs hurt. Bless you. I do hope you feel a little better soon.

    Love to you all,

    Elna x

    Hi Elna

I am sorry I missed your update, I came on at about 3.30 to see if you were home but then I went awol. I cooked tea then rich and I went late niight shopping. Didn't buy much, just lovely chocs for xmas and the tree.

I am so pleased that your appountment went well, and that the consultant was happy with your progress. I think wearing th collar in the car is a good thing, I wish I could have had one just for that reason leading up to this op. When you are a passenger you tend to feel the movement of the car and road bumps more.

You have another appointment in 6 weeks. I really do think your surgeon is looking after you well. It is a really good thing.
Take caare and don't over do things in those 6 weeks
I can guess that will be hard for you, especiially as christmas is fast approaching and no doubt you will be wanting to prepare.(little at a time  )

    Have a good day today
    Lots of love

It's good to hear all is still going well and you're being well followed up by the hospital. Keep up the good work but find time to rest a bit as well.
    Big hugs, Rita.

    Hi dear Rita,

Hugs back at you. I remember that you were finding being back at work a bit of a struggle, understandably so. Now another whole week has passed. I am wondering if it is getting any easier. I so hope it is. Perhaps you will be able to have a quiet weekend or are doing something special.

It is so good of you to look out for me. Thank you.

    Dear Elna,

Even though you still have the symptoms as before, and a few disturbed nights, there is a 'glimmer of hope' and you are recovering well. Your positive attitude must help.
So no hoovering for a further 6 weeks and the jobs will have to remain on hold. Do you think you can stick to that? I hope the family are helping when they pop round.

Good luck with the continued recovery Elna. Christmas and your birthday will be extra special this year.

    Dear Elizabeth,

He did not say I could not do my own vacuuming........ I have been doing that but I shall be good and not go back to "work" although I do miss the money.

Yes, perhaps I can put the collar on top of the christmas tree beautifully decorated. Second thoughts, think not, if I am allowed to stop using it, in 6 weeks time, it will be pushed right to the back of a cupboard somewhere or sent to Cris if she could make any use of it.

I must catch up with you on FB.

    Love
