Elna thanks for asking about me when you have so much going on yourself. I'm kind of settling into being back at work again and the reduced hours are making such a big difference. I'm using Annual Leave at the moment so my pay is not affected but next month I'll be on a reduced wage.
I find that every afternoon I have to lay down and have a rest. At least I can do that now I'm only working mornings. Management have implemented what OH said.
Sorry for such a long post.
I'd say that collar will be out of sight and hopefully out of mind in a few weeks time. I'm sure you've been out and about and doing more than you should be doing. Take good care, big hugs. Rita.0 -
Hi Elna
Thinking of you
Hope you are not too bad today.
I am on holiday but have logged in to the hotel
computer to check out AC and read the post.
Take care

Hi Elna
before l had my back surgery...l had completely 'lost' my Rt leg. Dead as a Do-do it was
Two things about the surgery fotr me at least...the reassurance it couldn't happen now because it had been FIXED!!
The other over the next 2 years the nerves DID heal a lot honestly not quickly, but over time. If you are the same as l was you may still see progress too.
Well done you and your surgeon
Love

Now I saw the comment from your consultant not to haul the vacuum cleaner up and down the stairs so thought that meant no hoovering at all as they are pretty awkward things and certainly cause me all sorts of pain!
Yes banish the collar to the cupboard along with the teds!

Dear Rita
I know all about reduced wage More like no wage for me with the couple of cleaning jobs i have - it is no clean, no pay! I am sure you will be getting exhausted by the afternoons.
Hopefully the collar will soon be out of the way. The consultant did mention about another operation at the post op appt and mumbled about keeping this at the back of his mind. A couple of times he said it probably would not be necessary so I took that as, no second op. Oh well, no good worrying about something in the future that I cannot do anything about if I have to have another op.
I do hope that you feel more rested after the weekend, Rita, to cope with this week. I need a bit of a rest, I was rather busy at the weekend but it was enjoyable.

Dear Elizabeth,
I was not going to ask the consultant about whether to do my own hoovering or not! I DO wear the collar when vacuuming - I have that much good sense!
Oh yes, the teds have been put at the back of the cupboard already with the other spare pairs from numerous past ops. They do wear out on occasion, so always good to have a few spares! Cannot wait to put the collar with them too.

Hi Elna,
I am sorry that I have not replied I am sure I did but I am befuddled at the best of times.
It does make sense that it will take time for the nerves to re route and I am sure they will given that you are in a way always exercising them just doing the day to day things. Teaching them into submission....
Very difficult to not want to overdo things but fingers crossed that your birthday present will be flinging the collar into the far recesses of the wardrobe.
Lv, I x0 -
As lovely as ever to hear from you dear I. What a wonderful birthday present, slinging that collar as you say into the far and dark recesses of the wardrobe - whenever that may be..... for certain!
I do hope that you are ok.

I know what you mean about the legs not doing as instructed: I have been known to have a similar problem with all four of mine after a lovely afternoon in the pub. Thank whoever that that journey home is downhill!
I am glad the consultant was happy, I am glad you are feeling happier, I know all too well the difficulty caused by a lack of income but as that is in your best interests I am sure Ian will give you 20p on Saturday for sweeties (if you've been a good girl, that is!) Keep going elna, keep going in your very sensible and steady way. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -

Thank you Julie, I am thinking of you too and trying to will the Bed Manager to find you a suitable bed and that surgeon into dictating a letter to his secretary with an op date for you.
Speak soon,
I am going out now into this morning's merky weather.

Hi Elna,
Just catching up after your check-up. I'm so glad that the surgeon was pleased and that you are too, even more so at the prospect of relegating that old collar to the back of the wardrobe in due course.
The nerves can take quite a long time to re-route, think what a long recuperation people with spinal injuries from bad RTA's have, and a lot make amazing recoveries.
I think surgeons don't like to predict these things because we are all different and often they just hope to stabilise us and prevent any further damage. That's what I was told last week anyway.
I was also told that my Miami J collar didnt fit at all (which I knew as I cant speak with it on!) It is the very smallest one for 'chin on chest' patients, so I have now got a softish collar which is such a relief, though not much support. So probably another op next year! Managed to get surgeon to agree to another review and MRI in Feb rather than decide there and then.
I think you have done really remarkably well after such a big op. Do remember you are still 'in recovery' though and dont push yourself too hard, though we are an impatient lot sometimes.
Take good care Elna,
Lizx0 -
Dear Barbara and Rita
Thank you so much for looking out for me. I hope you both had a good weekend and that you Rita are suitably rested for the start of another week at work.

Dear Liz
Lovely to hear from you.
How awful the miami j not fitting properly. It is uncomfortable enough when it does! Would the next size up have been to big for you then?
So another op for you next year then......You will let us know won't you? May be for me too - that is the unknown at the moment.
I totally agree with what you say about surgeons, they are mainly interested that their workmanship has healed up well and is doing its job. Agree too they cannot predict as everyone is different. I have noticed in the past, that surgeons move the goal posts with how long recovery will take. With my foot surgery it was 3 months and then 9 months! The nine months is nearly up and the foot is still swollen and I am sure that is it, but hopefully it will go down some more.
The surgeon is still keeping the second op for me at the back of his mind although at the first appointment I had with him and post op he said that I would more than likely not have to have another one to strengthen the back of the cord. At the 6 week post op check he was kind of letting me know there may be a possibility of another one. I told him I have a weird sensation that travels down my thighs if I bend my head down and he said this was part of the healing process. It is a horrid sensation and although I try not to, I lower my head sometimes without thinking about it.
It is lovely to only have to wear the collar outside now. I do get an ache in my neck every so often but I suppose this is to be expected.
It is so kind of you to look after Julie and me. I have been in close contact with Julie too. It is very reassuring to know that we have you to fall back on.
Do please keep in touch,
Love
