I'm not sure I've seen one yet up here but I do remember the Year of the Ladybirds - sometime in the '70s - when we were sweeping them off pavements.

Loods arn 'em (as they say round here, 'loods' rhymes with 'goods'). They are crawling all over the path, various bits of garden foliage, my car and two were on my crutch when I tottered into the pharmacy. DD

Beebly-bums are lovely, it's the short-tempered wasps who are not. :( I don't do bugs but I really don't mind if a bumble lands on me - I wait, it crawls about and realises that actually, in bee-terms, I am not that interesting and off it goes. But wasps? Why? I daresay there is some small biological point to them but honestly. Them's horrid. DD

wasps... The scourge of a summers day in the garden.. I hate the little black n yellow nazis :x
They are pure evil.. They should be irradicated forthwith.. Failing that, beaten to a pulpy mess :D
I think bumbley beams are great, could watch them for hours..
Took this photo a couple of summers ago

Oh Tony! What a beautiful picture! I love the fact that its wings look so tiny and delicate but the bumbly looks so solid! That is a smashing picture, well done mate! :) DD

Cracking photo, Tony! I love the way the wings seem almost part of the blossom and not to belong to the furry, stripey bit.

My first encounter with a bee was when I was about 3. It was on a dandylion which I thought looked beautiful so I'd pick it for my Mum. being a thoughtful child, I kindly and carefully lifted the bee off first  .

This was an early and salutary lesson on the ingratitude of creatures great and small.

Yes, Val, I've seen lots of ladybirds this year, already. I had to knock (in a very gentle way) some off my washing the other day.

I, too, love bumble bees and that's a beautiful photo Tony.

Wasps do actually eat garden pests like aphids, etc. so there is a purpose to them.

Ah, but so do ladybirds, Legs. And they do it without stinging people and they look pretty while they're at it - though not to the wasp, of course

(I've just edited this as I noticed I had managed to type 'laybirds'. Question: is a 'laybird' a female who hangs around clerical collars?)

Oh lovely picture Tony! I've just finished writing my dissertation for my degree, it was actually a project on bumblebees. You'll see lots of large bees around at the moment as the queens will be coming out of hibernation and looking for a good nest site :-)
Not seen many ladybirds around my area though. I think the good weather has confused many of our insect and plant friends :-)
