Hello

Would like to ask a question on the new blue badge form. It asks how many steps you can take etc but it states that the average footstep is a metre long. Well have measured my father's (ends in June 2012) and my own (ending October 2012) and none of our footsteps are near to this mark. My own is half this but what does one put down on form as they dont seem to account for this and think even someone over 6ft would struggle to step a metre at a time.

I think it is good they have tightened up on the rules for this but feel the questions are not so simple to answer, well no to us....Think will both lose them this year so treasuring time have left...

    Hi Elaine

Hmm, must admit i found the questions a tad strange and thought they must have been written by someone without a problem walking or you wouldn't measure it in that way!

I just completed it as best I could (my first application) and am hoping for the best.......it wont be any loss if i dont get it, but it will be inconvenient......(hoping for 1st TKR in late May/ June)

A metre  Flippin' 'eck, I can't quite manage to reach the end of my standing foot - and I assure you my feet are not a metre long  Just as well my application goes through more or less automatically.

I think I'd do one of two things, Elaine.
    1. As Jaja suggested, I would contact CAB as they're not the council and, in many ways, are much more helpful.
    2. If there's room I'd put in how many steps but also how long each step is.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

    Hi Elaine :D

What a strange question for them to ask :?

I didn't have to fill in that type of questionnaire as the Blue Badge is given automatically here on proof of DLA High Rate Mobility......

Good luck with it Elaine! some good suggestions given by others.... and yep I'd ask CAB too if it were me... they're sure to have come across this form and at least be able to advise on how best it should be completed.

    Hi Julia

Im like you waiting for my first TKR but it wont be till end of the year as consultant wants to delay a bit cos of my age (43)....So good look with yours and I shall follow you with interest.
It is strange the way they compose these questions and I will admit compared to many people then gladly they deserve the BB and I dont deny that...I just have osteochondritis dissecans of knee and bursitis of hips...I hope your application is successful...

    Thanks for your reply

    HI SW

Yes thats a good idea to put in the measurement of your step but I wonder do they take that into account or do they just stick to their own guidelines? I could try CAB but have tried in past with ESA and they were not terribly helpful...

    Hi Iris

Well yes obviously you are tonnes worse than the likes of myself and quite rightly too you get it automatically not have to be questioned...It is strange but its just like the ESA/DLA route now...They have tightened up but as per usual they have done it decades too late...

It's very odd, isn't it? My husband had a go at this. He's 6'2" and fit and healthy and his natural stride is less than a metre unless you measure from the back heel to the front toe.

    Hi Elaine
And its good to have you back, I wish I could help with the badge, like you say they have to tightened up on who they give it to, but the question is ridiculous.
I hope you get it sorted soon, then you can get your badge..good luck

    Hi Delboy

Yes it is right to note anything down to the doctor and then it cant come up as a surprise in future...ATOS dont need asking tiwce to come a knocking for sure..

I got mine through the higher rate nobility of DLA however any time I go to the doc now and he asks me how I am I make sure he records that walking is extremely slowly. I always mention anything that may affect my DLA so that it's on record in case the ATOS people call me in again.

Hi Barbara, good to see you again..

Well like I say it is right they tightened up on it and I can walk very short distances so am better than a lot of people so if that means I lose it fair enough...I wish they would take into account replacement operations but they seem to see this as a solution to getting better, it doesnt always go to plan....But can only apply and see what happens...

    Hi Elaine

I also got mine through the DLA route. I don't know how to answer your question only to say that they must allow for some walking ability, from the car park to the shop entrance for example, and if you can say you can only walk a short distances in pain and slowly that might satisfy them. I agree The questions are very difficult to answer.

    Hi Elaine

I've just received my new Blue badge through the post today. It was the first time I've had to renew it, but I don't remember having to state the number of steps I can walk on the form. However, when a lady rang me to do a telephone assessment, she asked how many metres I can walk. When I said I wasn't sure, she said to think of it in terms of bus lengths. She asked how many bus lengths I can walk, which made it much easier to visualise. I thought she was very helpful.

I'm so pleased that I've had my badge renewed as I don't know how I would manage without it. Good luck with your application.

My dad just got his renewal through for his blue badge and they now ask for a "certified copy" of your ID such as passport, marraige/birth certificate or driving license that is photocopied and signed by a person in good standing such as a Doctor, Nurse or Policeman and they have to write that this copy is a true likeness of the original then give their occupation and phone number.

There is also a section on the form to include upto 3 registration numbers of the cars you will most likely use your blue badge in. Plus the fee has gone up also its now £10.00

All this you will see people still abusing the system.

    Hi Elizabeth

Well the DLA route is obviously different. Ive been told also that they are clamping down on a group of people who in my opinion shouldnt be questioned - autism....It states now that this and other conditions are not enough to qualify, must have another impariment to count too...I have nephew who is autistic and he has no sense of direction nor danger but all they see is he is a big strapping lad!!
The new form asks you to state landmarks in your town where you can walk with postcodes...Its all trickery....

    Hi Joan

Well yes it is the same as the ESA and when they call you for medical they remind you that if you put cant walk more than 20yards how far it is to the room they see you in...For me bus lengths dont help, i guess im not great with measurements but this average step is just crazy to me unless youre Shrek!!

    Glad you got your BB!!

You are indeed right with the information you state below and I know the fee is £20 in scotland...For me the cost isnt an issue, only paid £2 the last time and that was as cheap as chips but making it the same as ESA forms to me seems very extreme...I guess they have to govern it someway but why didnt they do it fairer years ago??
The abusers still exist, in my town a layby is opposite the main post office and McDonalds and the amount of folk sitting munching a big mac or running with a parcel really annoys me, particularly when most are young and fit or have kids siting in car...Have asked a few to move but get dogs abuse too from young revvers!!! Have pointed out to local traffic warden that it is an abuse hot spot but they dont seem to care...

    Thanks for reply..

I think they may be just generalising and don't want the actual amount of steps you can take, but how far you can walk assuming that one step=metre. In other words if you can walk 10 metres say 10 steps.
That is how I would do it if I was trying for a BB.
