Hi everyone I'm new to this forum but have bad RA in my wrists, hands, thumbs and feet. Back on mega steroids for crash course until someone comes up with a better plan. But of course gardening, screwdrivers, drills, cooking and all of life's little joys winds them up  ......Wrist supports etc are ok at night but you can't wash your hands during the day...I can certainly sympathise with you all but how you stop and rest eludes me. I'm 73 and also have serious spondylothesis [possibly back surgery] and am a carer. Last weekend [my birthday] I cried for 2 days but the extra steroids have finally sorted me out. Looking forward to getting to know you all because I get quite lonely.0

Hello Greenlily and welcome to the forum. I'm so sorry you had such a dreadful birthday and I hope we can ensure the next one is much better. Arthritis can be a lonely business and just having others around who are in the same boat can help a lot. It doesn't mean that this is a very solemn place - one look on Chit Chat will remove any doubts about that - but, when stuff gets rough, you'll always find someone one here to go through it with you.
I'm glad the steroids have helped. It must be very hard being a carer in your situation.
'Gardening, screwdrivers, drills and cooking', eh? Well, I still cook but I've had over 50 years of RA so my gardening and DIY skills are very much in the past.
You do need to rest at times and learn to recognise when those times arrive. As for the splints - I used to think that washing up, ironing, vaccing etc was nature's way of ensuring I didn't wear them too much. Overuse leads to the muscles nodding off and not being strong enough when needed so just using the splints when relaxing is probably about right.
Take care.
P.S. I almost forgot. If you re-do your post as a new thread I'm sure you'll get more replies. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Ah yes stickywicket you're right but I haven't yet got to grips with the finer points of this site yet. Unfortunately my age group weren't born with the internet gene and it all has to be learnt.. Always seems easier to tag on someone else's thread which is naughty. Sorry will try harder. BTW I shouldn't do all sorts of outside stuff but pottering diverts me and making a fruit cage has entertained me even if I have to do it in bits and pieces. My garden is my playground but it is getting difficult and I may have to give up0

you tag away mi dear
Giving up things you enjoy seems to be a frequent thing I'm afraid... Some are really lucky and manage to keep up with things.
I used to love my jui jitsu.. Not a chance with it. Never mind though eh?
