Splint-astic!

I'm back from my rheumatology appointment concerning my fizzing fingers. I will be referred for nerve conduction tests, I have a little blue form to go and have my neck X-rayed and I have been given my first pair of splints. They're weird. :? I have to wear them at night - - and that is going to be very odd at first but I daresay I will get used to them. I have them on at the moment but as I want to go and drive Miss Daisy I guess I'll have to remove them, mind you I'll try with first in getting her off the drive. A new learning curve for yours truly, hey-ho. DD

Been there , done that ! Had splints for my hands and wrists a few years ago they were very shabby chic ! Fine once used to them but guess I never wore them enough as now too mishapen to wear them . Glad your app was reasonably ok and bet it helped having Mr DD's support . Jillyb0

I have wrist splints and found them very helpful, but they made me hot
Hope yours help0 -
Thank you everyone. I feel like a 'proper' arthritic now! I erred on the side of caution and removed them before whizzing Daisy into town. I shall be going up the hospital later to get the X ray done, I am currently flaked out on the sofa, joints twanging and fingers fizzing. Grrrr. I feel very tired, which is silly as I slept relatively well last night. What a malarkey it all is. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

hi DD
I'm glad your appointment went well and that they are now investigating your neck and giving you the nerve conduction tests.Hopefully they will then be able to get to the bottom of this tingling feeling.
I also used to wear splints at one time and know how strange they feel. I did try to wear them for work, but always they got in my way, so more often than not they were just placed on my desk. I wish now I had persevered with them. I also wish I had been told to wear them through the night. :?
you wear those splints DD , I was a fool not to.
Thinking of you.

Oh hon. I am sorry about your experience, I have listened and learned and I will be a good girl, promise. One of the better aspects of them is that they are rather solid so I can give 'im indoors a good clonk every now and again if necessary! DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Congratulations on becoming ‘a proper arthritic’, DD. I presume you’ve just been faking it up until now (I hereby nominate you for the AC Oscars.)
I very much hope they help and help a great deal. Just remember to allow a little extra time for loo visits, especially where alcohol is involved. I well remember the frantic pulling and tugging against the clock :oops:If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hi DD
Imagine....after all this time.....you feel like a real arthritic
Glad they were thorough when you went for your appointment.
I've got no experience of splints so all I can say is just be careful when driving Daisy

Well, what a strange afternoon. I've managed one lesson splinted and life was awkward. I guess you don't realise how much you flex your wrists until you can't. My wrists have also been painful since all the pressing and pulling which was inflicted on them this morning which hasn't helped matters. Dammit. Nose-blowing is tricky, manipulating letters, cards and books is not easy - I think I need to learn some new ways of doing things. Ye gods.
I am trying to regard these rigid muddy brown things as a badge of honour, hence my comment about being a real arthritic. Let's face it, the crutches and the Clatterator didn't indicate much, did they? Dammit. Right, off to sort out the veg for dinner - splintless. DD
PS Many thanks for the hugs Mig, they are needed.Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -

Hi DD,
I've got splints too. They are a god send. I only wear mine at night and they really make my hands and wrists feel better. I too was given the brown ones at first. After a while, I saw an occupational therapist and she supplied some nice black ones that are slightly bent into shape with the metal part going into the palm of your hand at an angle. These ones are even better (and the color is better).
Out of interest, has your GP checked your B12 levels? Mine was really low and the tingling has improved loads since starting on B12 injections.
Hope the splints help

Good Luck with the splints DD.X0

Hey DD. Hope all goes well with the splints. I imagine they wouldnt be the easiest things to get used to. Do they get itchy?

I have splints but only really wear them at night. They help with the joint pain but not really the tingling fingers, which still wake me up.0

Morning lovely
How did you get on with the splints through the night?
I hope you managed to get some rest and that they didn't feel too strange.
Take care.

What an odd night. I couldn't hold hands with Mr DD everytime I moved the extra bits of velcro fastening would scratch against the cover or the pillow, not being able to bend those joints felt so strange. In the end I opted for 'sleeping' on my back with my hands resting on my chest like some stone figure on a tomb in a church. :?
On the plus side, no tingling. I guess the new regime at night is worth it for that alone. I'm off to buy some tubigrip to wear over the top of the splints, at least he is away tonight so I can go to bed, in total privacy, looking like a rather odd mummy. DDHave you got the despatches? Oh DD you do make me laugh, mummy DD,can just see it .Mig0

Really glad they helped DD. And, speaking from experience, you WILL get used to them - it just takes a while.

Thank you all for your encouragement, I appreciate it. My hands have just started to fizz, I have three lessons coming up so I guess it's time to splint up. I'll get used to it - those of you with experience did ergo I can too. Hi DD, and welcome to splintworld from me.
I have numerous pairs of splints. some soft ones with metal inserts for wrists and/or thumbs, some just for wrists, some just for thumbs, some moulded to fit just my hands, resting splints and paddle splints. The worse thing I find with them, is they make my hands sweat. I used to use tubigrip under the splints for this, but it frays so quickly. Now I cut the toes off of socks and wear those. Today I'm wearing quite fetching purple and orange striped socks under my splints! Well it works for me.
Could you trim the spare piece of velcro, to stop it catching? I always round off the cormers of mine as they can be quite sharp.
I hope you soon get used to your splints, and they help you, I know I couldn't be without mine.
Wishing you well,
Numpty0 -
Well, night two passed OK-ish, I wobbled into town today, even wobbled into Boots and what did I forget to buy? Yup. Twerp brain. I will try curving the corners of the fastenings, thank you for that idea Numpty, it's both simple and effective (whereas I'm only the former ) and I have some old socks that I could use instead of tubigrip. I don't find them too hot at the moment but I am sure that will come. I must say that the fizzing has dramatically decreased so I guess it is carpal tunnel. I haven't yet made it to the hospital for the neck Xray, stuff is twanging a little too much at the mo to have my head placed in stressful positions and I can't hack that. I know, I know, feebledaisy. That's for next week, probably first thing on Monday morning. Right, have to wind up for work now, once again many thanks for all your comments and encouragement. Norty boy! No tassels for you tonight. My aesthetically unpleasing NHS beige monsters have a metal strip that runs from the palm down the length of the splint, this can be removed to still allow support but with a little movement. What I bought in B**ts was a rather natty pink and white wrist support (already have one) so that I can wear them in lessons. I don't think my younger pupils would like the beige efforts - I know that if I was a child they would put me off the teacher but the pinky ones are a little prettier: not as effective but much easier on the eye and not as scary.
