Dammit all to hell and back. A few weeks back I pulled a rib muscle on the right hand side due to coughing fit of epic proportions. That was healing and settling down nicely then what do I go and do? Pull it again, badly, by lugging the Clatterator in and out of Daisycar. It hurts to breathe in, it hurts to breathe out, it hurts to cough and sneeze (which I am doing on a regular basis thanks to hayfever, my first bout in years) and, worst of all, it hurts to walk. That's a new one on me.

I am sick and tired of this whole damn business. I am bored with the pain and tiredness, I'm finding the phsyical limitations of my life frustrating beyond belief. The whole business of balancing activity against spoon supply is nauseating. My gorilla is sitting four-square on my chest, gloating. Will someone please administer a swift kick up my Jim Royle and tell me to shape up? Thanks. DD

    Oh DD
I could say don't breathe then.....thats not the answer. You could have snapped a rib...they do easily...but there isn't anything that can be done about it. Thats not what you want to hear either.
Its bound to be making you feel rotton but I'm not brave enough to give you a kick....always assuming I could stay awake.
I don't suppose your pain dullers are doing any good. The only thing you can do is rest. So do it. May x

No kicks from me , that would hurt my knee , hip and foot . Maybe your gorilla would like a few days by the sea ? I'm trying to send mine , grumpy gorilla , out for the day ( if I can prise it off of my knees ) ; maybe yours would enjoy a day out too ? Given it spending money and a picnic but can't persuade him to leave me . How about a mass A/C gorilla picnic to get rid of them for a while ! Feel better soon . Jillyb

(((DD))), I understand the frustration, it drives me up the wall myself. Pain and limitations push all to our limits at times. Do things you enjoy and be kind to yourself.

It will pass, wonder where I heard that? ( )

    Take care, thinking of you.

Maybe it's not a kick or being told to shape up that you need. Maybe it's a visit to your doctor, and a bit of mollycoddling.
So whether you like it or not, I'm sending you these. ((((()))))

oh no dd this is too much pain! i live with constant side & rib pain due to my badly healed broken rib which has taken up residence on my left lung.
i cant kick you anywhere as to lift my leg would cause me to topple off balance so that's out.

everybody is different of course and maybe a doctor can help you but in my case i get a shrug of the shoulders when i DEMAND that they do something. they said they could, they could try really hard, but a knife cutting the bone could skim my lung and i was dramatically bleed to death on the operating table. so live with it i need to do.

but ok some practical help - well a slighly filled, rather than bulging full hot water bottle really will ease the muscle, as will a radox muscle relaxant bath - get mr dd to help you in.

the other thing that actually really does work is a neck pillow. yes indeed, you put it under your arm (find a comfy position) and this keeps the arm and away from the sore bit and also stops you moving in ways that hurt all round the rib. its really like having a little pillow.

i dont advise going out with this under your arm or people might think you some nutty old bat (i hear her say do i care?)

anyhow its brill to use in the house when walking about, when doing tasks, when sitting and also really really good when you are sleeping and prone to moving around creating more pain.

remember to breathe properly or the pain WILL be worse.

hayfever - honey from a local crop does actually work. take it in drinks on toast or by the spoonful. i know people who do this and the success rate is 100%

good luck and hope you are back to your old self soon x

Thank you everyone for your kind words and helpful advice. The hayfever has come as a bolt from the blue - due to the immuno-suppressant meds it's been in abeyance but I guess there is just so much damned pollen around that my system is once more overwhelmed by something natural. At least I'm not wheezing - well not yet, taking the inhalers is painful.

Thank you for the idea of the neck pillow, earthspirit, that sounds like a plan. Luckily all dignity etc flew out of various windows years ago and I no longer care what people think of me. I've smothered my side with Voltarol and that has eased things a little but of course I cannot take the diclofenac as well so my left heel is cranking itself up again. The hands are fizzing nicely and my inner three year old is throwing a tantrum to end all tantrums. **** it all to hell. With any amount of luck Mr DD will escort me to the Plump Feline where I can grizzle into a pint of summat lovely. DD

OK so, which shape would you like to be, DD? The TV has plenty on offer right now. You could be swimmer shape (all shoulders and biceps), gymnast shape (pre-pubescent doll), hammer shape (broad as long), sumo shape (ball of lard) to name but a few.

I suspect you’re only suggesting a kick up the rear because you know none of us is capable of administering one without damaging ourselves more than you. Anyway, that’s not what you need right now. Dr SW prescribes a weekend (at least) of whatever rib-friendly activity rocks your boat. I believe total inactivity is bad for damaged ribs so maybe a spot of steady, gentle, arm-raising in the Plump Feline would aid recovery while delivering a little pain relief. I do hope so.

I tottered to the pub, eventually downed one pint then stuck to coke. Ye gods. Mr DD administered the second round of Volt with more enthusiasm than I felt was realy necessary but it was easier than my trying to do it. The co-cos are kinda doing their thing so I shall keep myself ticking over on them. The inner three year old has given up and disappeared. I'm coming to terms with it now which is a good thing. DD

I've been puzzling over this and still can't see why you can't either put Voltarol on your heel or not put it anywhere and take the pills instead.

TBH Sticky, I've been puzzling too. The leaflet that comes with the cream is smothered in dire warnings about not overdoing the diclo (Voltarol is diclo by another name and application and yes, 'smothered' is an over-exaggeration but that's my mood at the moment). I think I am in danger of forgetting just how toxic some of the meds I cheerfully swallow are, let alone the possibly harmful interactions that could occur as I cheerfully shove in a Piriton or two, maybe a trammy and a diclo et cetera et cetera et cetera. As for the heel I can't bend my left leg enough to ease the strain of reaching - another job for 'im indoors methinks.

I think I'll stick to what I know. CB and cocos is a good starting point. DD

I hope the pain is easing off a bit more by the time you read this, DD.
My worst pain is in my knees, so I'm trying to imagine how that would feel if it was in my ribs too ( unprintable words spring to mind! )
With regards to those nasty gloating gorillas which seem to be roaming around sitting on peoples' chests, I live fairly near Twycross Zoo, where they have a large gorilla enclosure. I'm sure that I could arrange for a few more to be rounded up and locked securely away if that would help at all :D

    Hi DD
One cyber kick coming your way

    It will pass...all things do.
Bet you feel the same as I did when I told someone to pace themselves and it was suggested I practice what I preach a bit more {in a loving way} :D ..I think it was a loving way

    Sending you hugs ((((()))))

I kinow there isnt much that can be done but dont forget....dont breath shallow.....I know that helps the pain but can lead to pneumonia. Breath normally even though you feel like saving the breathing.

The clattorators arent that easy to lug in and out are they....Is Daisy 3 or 5 door? My micra was 3 and I couldnt havent coped with it.
The Pixo is 5 doors although no bigger than the micra......I end up lifting it, shoving the first couple of wheels in the back seat and then going round and opening the other door and pulling it the rest of the way.

The pillow thing is a good idea..... I use a cushion in the house when sitting and it eases it and I also use it if I'm a passenger in the car..Not if I'm driving

Sending you more ((((())))))) and apart from raising that arm if Mr DD takes you to the pub you rest.
    Lecture over

    Love

Oh dear dreamdaisy you have been in the wars. Hope your ribs have eased a bit today and you are feeling better. If it's sunny your way sit and rest in the garden, provided of course you don't sneeze too much with your hayfever. My son eats local honey when he has hayfever and that helps him.

Sending all my best wishes for a better week.

Morning all, a slightly less grumpy old bag is in evidence today and hopefully that will remain the case. I thank you all for your kind thoughts and messages.

Hileena, Daisy is a 3 door with a boot which has the nasty habit of locking itself for weeks at a time then suddenly unlocking itself. I know the reason behind this but currently lack the funds to get it all sorted. 'Twas ever thus. Anyhoo the Clatterator does not fit in the boot, so yup, it's a case of opening the passenger door, move the seat forwards, then hoist, shove, swear, twist, untangle handbag from the handlebar, shove, swear then slam the seat back into place THEN stretch in to unlock the door using the little gizmo switch near the handbrake. (I had a new battery fitted to the key fob when I was down at my Ma's in April, the young man who did was most insisitent that he should read the handbook in case he fitted the wrong battery, he fitted the 'correct' battery and yup, ir doesn't work. Borrox. I was too preoccupied with Ma to sort it out. ) One would think with this Olympian task of hauling and shoving I would be a slim little thing - dream on!

Although the pain levels have not dropped that much I have now adjusted and I think I'm coping OK. I do breathe in fairly deeply and 'enjoy' the twinge that comes along, the same with the exhaling, but the coughing and sneezing are a challenge. I thank whoever for Piriton, my second favourite med. Right, time for a shower then I shall submit my goddess-like form to the vigorous application of Volt by my belovéd. Ye gods. DD

    Hi DD
I hope things are easing up for you at least a little today. I also hope Mr DD has not killed you with kindness while using the Voltarol.
Its quite a dilemma.....swallow the diclo or use the cream. Your right you can't do both. Otherwise you'd be a dozy DD.....not good.
Just take it easy.....no reaching/lifting or acrobatics even when the pain goes. Don't be so stubborn...as I'm sure you can be. Once it has gone you definately don't want it back again.
