Can you get thrush in the mouth with Methotrexate as I am now wondering if I have thrush instead as the mouth ulcer is not going away whatsoever and now looks white on the top of my tongue.I have never had thrush before so this is all I can think of what is causing my mouth so sore and ulcer not going away.Rhuematology just advised with the mouth washes still but nothing is helping,I have my routine bloodtest Monday I may mention to the nurse at my GP's.

What other medications do you take? I was having really bad problems with mouth ulcers for around 9 months, some would come and go and others seemed to not go, I was due to have a tongue biopsy as I was referred to a maxi facial specialist by my rheumatologist to try and figure out what the cause was. Lucky for me all of my ulcers have gone now, and I think it was caused by the Anti-Inflammatory I was taking (Arcoxia) which is strange as I've been taking it for years on end without issues and now it seems to cause lots of mouth ulcers. I guess you could ask to have a referral like I did to see someone who deals with mouth conditions as they are better placed at fixing these types of issues.0 -
I am also taking Lansoprozole,Naproxen, folic acid,Adcal,Hydroxychloriquine(to be started when ulcers have gone)I just want some comfort I will see what there next step is as I may have to come off the Meth yet or I will mention it getting refered.0

I had continuous oral thrush thanks to naproxen, in the end I gave up trying to get rid of it because the nap was a daily med. It's still a problem with varying degress of severity (even though I no longer take nap) so maybe it's due to my sulph. Once the immune system is suppressed it does make us very vulnerable to these things. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi there
Just had a little google :
What common side effects can occur with naproxen?
Diarrhea, constipation, gas, mouth sores, headache, dizziness, thirst, lightheadedness, drowsiness, tingling in arms and legs, cold symptoms, ringing in the ears, hearing problems, and trouble falling or staying asleep are all possible side effects associated with naproxen.
I do sympathise.

Ive been on Naproxen since October have never ha any problems with that other than when I first started with upset tummy then I got lansoprozole I woul assume as I have only been on Meth for just over a month that is why as I had ulcer couple weeks ago too but that cleared up ok I will keep an open min with the naproxen as well and not rule it out.Hopefully I will get everything cleared up this coming week.0

Hi Shandy
This makes quite interesting reading:
http://www.nature.com/bdj/journal/v198/n2/full/4811972a.html
Especially the section typed in bold.
I also read this:
Unfortunately, depleting the body of folate can affect healthy cells, too, especially those in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, mouth, hair follicles and liver, says Prabha Ranganathan, MD, an associate professor of medicine in the division of rheumatology at Washington University School of Medicine. GI problems such as nausea and vomiting are the most common side effects associated with methotrexate, affecting between 20and 65 percent of RA patients who take the drug. While hair loss is a relatively uncommon side effect in RA patients who take methotrexate, up to one third develop mouth ulcers, or sores.

It certainly is possible to get thrush in the mouth, in my days as breastfeeding counsellor I would occasionally see mum and baby pair both with thrush, mother in the nipples and baby in the mouth, and often a very sore nappy rash as it came out of the other end as well. What I can't remember is how it was treated, whether there was anything that could just be applied to the mouth or whether they were given an anti-fungal tablet or liquid.
Hopefully you will have had it looked at by a nurse or doctor by now.0 -
well it seems according to this different doctor I see today I have no thrush,I have to wait 6 weeks before he will even consider refering me and that my bloods are not that high so they wont take me off Meth anyway.I am not impressed with anything her has said to me considering if rheumatology was not concerned they wouldn't of called me in the first place.I will speak to rhummy when they ring me back hopefully by tomorrow seems he has no experience in anything he says in my opinion.0

I lost track of which 'ignoramus' you were referring to in your last sentence but it's worth bearing in mind that GPs are not rheumatologists. I don't contact my GP about anything rheumatology-related because that is not her field. I hope you hear from the rheumatology department soon. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Sorry I was refering to the GP and I think I will bear that in mind I was not sure what I can call rhummy for as it was an ulcer but I suppose because its due to the medication maybe that is best in the future I am hoping to get it sorted as other than this Meth hasn't been that bad and would rather not keep changing meds if I can avoid it as maybe it will eventually settle down once my body gets used to it so just fingers crossed for my blood results now.0
-
Do you have a rheumatology helpline? I've left a message on mine about my cracked tongue plus its lovely yellow coating. I can't be bothered at the moment to trek to the GP but if they tell me to do so then I will.
General Practitioners are just that, they know a little about a lot whereas specialists know a lot about a little. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
I called the helpline I am waiting on them calling me back over my blood as it's high they asked me to call today so once they call back I will speak about my mouth as I spoke to them on Friday after my GP didn't want to advise me and they told me to carry on with mouth washes etc and to see if any improvement over the weekend.0

This may be utterly random and useless to you but then again, it might give you a bit of relief...mouth thrush gets soothed and cleared by fresh pineapple which I find isn't too bad at calming the worst of ulcers too. Doesn't sort the bloods or meth situation I know but could give you a bit of relief?Hey little fighter, things will get brighter0
-
Thankyou for the help with my mouth I will give that a try once I hear back from Rheumatology I don't think my daughter will come near me mind she has an allergy to pineapple and her face swells but right now anything is worth a I do hope eventually I get used to the Meth and it all settles down still.0

I have been referred for my thrush in the mouth to the oral team at the hospital.. had for months and months must admit it is not to bad at the moment but have been unable to get rid of it. Again it maybe down to meds gp was at a loss and i took various meds over months to try and get rid of it. My mouth is general quite sensitive and i love spices food, which is a pain ... literally . Will let everyone know what is said once i have seen them in April..0

Good News!!!! My bloods are going back down and my mouth is finally improving maybe the increased dose of Folic Acid is helping now and my body is starting to adjust finally,so I am glad I decided in the end to take my Meth last nite and not wait like I was intending on doing at first.Hopefully things will now start getting better with the Meth as I didn't really want to change meds again.I have to start my Hydroxy but I think I will leave it a few more days first now just to be sure.0
-
Shandy I am sorry you have been suffering with thrush I know that is so painful...bet you are glad to see the back of it...fingers crossed it stays like this for you xxLove

Great news. In the link I gave you it said oral ulceration can occur as a side effect of methotrexate therapy and this may be due to lack of folic acid supplementation or overdosage due to confusion regarding its once-weekly regime.

Thankyou I think the folic has helped too as I have only been on the extra dosage this week. I can feel a couple of others under the tongue too but hopefully they wont be too much bother and will also subside. If they do persist in coming back I'll call rhummy again. Rhummy did say that ulcers can be a problem when you first start Meth but soon settle down I hope this is the case.0

Well been to hospital today and seen mouth doctor. Very interesting chat.. The build up of white on my tongue is due to the fact my mouth is dry and my glands for spit..were damaged when i had rads years ago...plus my age!!!! Cheeky **** only just in my 50's managed to keep my mouth shut and made no comment... just smiled.
Apparently your tongue produces whatever he called it to protect the tongue when you have a dry mouth. All this time i have thought it was my inhalers, plus worrying about other nasty like you do.  He then said that because i have this white protection it tends to crack which then can lead to infections and thrush being one of them. Now going to rinse my mouth out with baking powder and water to prevent infections and have phoned my gp for a prescription for a gel for my mouth which protects your mouth.
As for the tingling and stinging especial when i eat spicy foods.. he hinted it might just be in my head... he was polite about it. He said he could not see anything that could be causing that in my mouth...... Soooo we will see whether it is in my head. Will be giving myself a ticking off and telling myself it is not happening when i am having a ginger beer. Might juts write down when it happens over the next 3 months so i have something to go back with.
Relieved i have some answers now.. a little p****d off that i was never told this would or could be caused after treatment with rads... this could have been treated years ago or prevented. May have been a long roads but getting there. Pick up prescription tomorrow.
Does make me wonder if anyone else has this rather than thrush????
Watch this space..

That is interesting Lupin, at least you now have an answer. My tongue is yellow, furry, split, cracked, sore and hurts when eating spicy food (shame I love it so much). I also get a very dry mouth during the night (I am not a natural nose-breather thanks to years of asthma) and I will try the baking powder thing (is that the same as bicarbonate of soda? I have brain mush but I think it is). Good luck, I hope things improve for you soon. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

They are 2 different things Dream not the same but look the same you can get both in the supermarket bicarbonate is very good as a cleaner around the home to add to water for like lifting burn foods off saucepans, cleaning shower heads etc as it fizzes,Kim and Aggy swear by it lol0
-
Baking powder is, I think, bicarbonate of soda, with an added acid, probably cream of tartar. :?0
-
I do a lot of baking and have a tub of baking powder, bicarbonate and cream of tartar so now I am even more confused lol0
-
Opps it was Bicarbonate of soda.... what is the difference??? I have just read the label and it says it is a gentle raising agent...!!!!0
