Hi
I have my Occupational Health assessment tomorrow. I have been told by the hospital that I will not be able to carry out all of my duties at work, without putting myself at risk , so I am being assessed prior to a meeting with HR about my future. I am feeling very anxious about it. To make things worse I am in agony with my back and it is sending spasms into my hip and down my legs. My knees are also giving way especially when coming down stairs, I think this is from my back too.
I am having to go to the assessment alone as Mr NB is working.
Thank you
NB

Hi NB
I went for an assessment by Occupational Health recently. Didnt know what to expect but when I go there the lady doing it was very pleasant and seemed to be very understanding and sympathetic.I have OA in both knees, also I get a lot of pain in my lower back which has not been investigated yet. My job is assistant store manager in a busy hardware/DIY store and requires me to spend a lot of my day lifting, pulling trollies, building shelves and generally being on my feet. I had already come to the conclusion that I was unable to carry on in my job before I had the assessment and the report confirmed this. Had a meeting with Regional manager of my company on Friday and have been dismissed on incapability. This is very scary and am now having to go into the unknown of claiming benefit and facing an uncertain future.
My thoughts are with you and I will be in your pocket, keep us informed of the outcome.
PS the worst part is trying to get to the Occy Health meeting place I had to get a taxi which cost £22 because cannot walk hardly any distance0 -
I'll be there NB. Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time. ((()))0

I'll be there, too, NB. Hope that things go well for you.

You can count me in too, I will be thinking of you and I hope that it doesn't cause you too much discomfort. Please let us know how it goes, yes? DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi
Thanks Brandy for your advice, sorry to hear about your problems, take care x
Thanks DD, Frogmella and Meg,
Just to make things more tricky, my back worsened and I am struggling to weight bear on my new THR side. Mr NB has fetched me both of my crutches, but the pressure of being upright sends my back into awful spasms and pain . I have glugged some Oromorph, and my daughter has brought me a hot water bottle to put under my back. I am not sure what to do if it is still like this in the morning. I really feel I should try to go still, but how?? Getting in the car would be a night mare!!
Oh and did I mention I picked up a handmirror this morning to dust under it and the glass fell out and broke. Just what I need, more bad luck!
Thanks for your support, it is much appreciated x

Oh dear NB
I'm in your pocket too
Ignore breaking the mirror and bad luck that goes with it
I hope your assessment goes your way
When I had my last one I must have had one a year with my Occ health Dr for last four years of work it was to prove I was not fit to do my job and help get my ill, health retirement which it did
It is a very difficult and stressful, time I,remember each and every one of mine
So a great big HUG coming your way (((( ))))
Good luck

Me too, NB. You are having a very rough ride but maybe that's the best time for them to see you if you can make it. Only you can decide that. I am thinking of you.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hi
Wow! Thankyou all for your support
Unfortunately my back got too bad last night and I ended up going to hospital by ambulance, as the out of hours docs wouldn`t let me go by car, or have a prescription for something, due to my history. I spent 7 hours in A&E having IV morphine, and diazepam for the pain and spasms, and was told I could stay in or if I could mobilise I could go home. So I told Mr NB to get my crutches and I managed to get on 2 feet! They gave me more diazepam to take at home last night, and I was told to speak to my GP today. So I rang my GP first thing as my back `went` again as soon as I stood up to go to the bathroom. She has prescribed Diazepam for 2-3days and am to take my morphine medication for pain, and to make an appointment to see the GP later in week to get a referral for MRI and to see a Neuro surgeon.
I have cancelled the Occ Health appt til next week, although they made me feel bad by saying I would be charged through work as I did not give 48 hours notice! I have left a message at work for my manager.
I am in a lot of pain, and feel nauseous too. And feel so disappointed that I am not seeing Occ health and am draging this process out longer, but I can`t help it.
Thanks again for your support xx

I'm so sorry to read this, hope it won't be too long before you feel better. Mig0

So sorry that you've been so unwell NB. I hope that the pain eases soon. Also hope that they don't charge you for the missed appointment, as it wasn't your fault.
Take care of yourself.
Meg0 -
Having to delay the appointment is a nuisance for all concerned, there's no doubt about that, and I also have no doubt they will charge you because that is typical of the small-minded, mean and petty behaviour of jobsworths. The 'small print' is a wondrous example of how intolerant and inflexible organisations, policies and other structures can be.
I hope your back eases soon - all the pain relief in the world isn't going to sort out the origins of this trouble but at least it helps. Rest as much as you can so that you are putting any undue stress on your back or your newly-sorted hip. You are in the wars again, aren't you? Surely it's about time the whole lot s*dded off and gave you some peace and quiet. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
Hi NB
I quite agree with DD and s** them
How if your back is bad can you get to see them you can't get up let alone in a car to get there
Can't they come and see you? Probably not as they never seem to put themselves out to help others
I hope the diazepam kicks in for the muscle spasm in your back
Now just rest and take it easy

Hi
Thanks Mig, Meg and DD
The new Occ health dept is a private company, so money orientated, with no compassion or common sense! I am having a big dose of the `why me`s!!` today, but then I think why not me?!! Life is a *$**% at times and I seem to be getting more than my fair share at the moment.
I have just had a slug of Oromorph as the Zomorph and other dullers haven`t helped, yet.
I am waiting for my manager to ring back, and feel like I am waiting for the head master to call me into his office for a telling off!!
Well, September has got off to a pretty rubbish start, the only way is up I guess!!
NB0 -
Hi Maria
As you know , working for the NHS often means no compassion!! The Occ Health Dept is now a private company and is run like a business. I can`t help what happened but feel it will be looked on badly. I wanted to go today,(before my back went) to start the process and find out what my future will be. Now it is dragging on .
Thanks x
NB0 -
Oh Nicola I am sorry, poor you has if you don't have enough on ..must say I hate being dragged off to hospital very scary, so I am glad you got home...but something needs doing about that back.
How awful of work to treat you like this...privatizing has really improved things in this country... I dont think...you concentrate on getting that back better hopefully the MRI wont be long.
You take care ((((())))xxLove

Thanks Barbara xx
I have had a really quiet day, even dozing off at one point, not like me at all!!
It is n`t really my boss or work as such being `off` with me, but the private Occ health people. My manager told me not to worry about what they said as I couldn`t have informed them any sooner than I did.
It has been rearranged that I see Occ Health next week (Weds) and a meeting with HR has been arranged for the following Monday.
I am still in a lot of pain from my back and struggling to mobilise. I am just planning to potter at home, between pills and potions until I see the GP on Wednesday.
I hope you are ok xxx
NB0 -
Hi Nearly
Gosh!!! You have had a really rough time there  I am sorry that your back 'went' so fast and stopped you having your appointment.
I do am not impressed that you will be in effect punished again for being ill/in pain :x
If it's any consolation at all I do think your GP has done exactly the right thing for you with the diazepam and the suggestion of a referral for a neuro apt.
Thinking of you at the moment while you get a wee bit better. Just think of yourself for now.
Love and ((()))
