We are having a BBQ today. Just 3 other couples. I owe it to my BBQ-loving husband (He is doing all the work) and don't begrudge him it even though I detest them on many levels. However, I need your help to get through this one.
I've currently got hay fever or a cold or possibly both which means I'm sneezy and coughing, with not a lot of voice and, as both set off my asthma, not breathing too freely despite inhalers etc. I think I made things worse yesterday (When he was cleaning everything in readiness and singing happily to himself) by assuming it was hay fever not a cold or a bug (I felt a bit light-headed on Sunday) and so taking my meth as usual.
Today might just be one of my occasional post-meth-slump days. Or it might be that I do have a cold or virus and it's taking advantage of a further-depressed immune system. Whatever the cause, I feel rough in several areas and my limbs feel leaden. He has offered to cancel (Greater love hath no BBQ-addict husband) but I've said no. All the guests are disgustingly healthy people.
I won't put the damper on his fun. But I could really use some encouraging words. As a born and bred Yorkie, I don't need a great deal. Something on the lines of 'Get your lazy rump into gear, woman' or a mere 'What a whinger!' will be quite sufficient Thank you.

If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Crikey - you must be feeling rough and having to socialise on top of it? Oh Sticky, I don't envy you one bit but respect your generosity in letting Mr SW play with his mates. I suggest this remedy: say hello, cough and sneeze a great deal so everyone stays away from you then seize a bottle of summat nice and retire hurt from the fray.
I know you are a determined woman (and that can stand you in good stead) but sometimes it's not an ideal coping strategy and I think this is one of those times. I am sorry because I'm not going to tell you to shape up; keep up with the dullers if necessary, don't overdo the inhalers (because that can aggravate matters further) and I hope you feel at least a little brighter by kick-off. Brace yourself: ((( ))) x DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -

I agree with DD, put in an appearance, have something to eat/drink, then make an excuse and slip away, with a bottle.
So sorry you feel rough, typical that it's when you have something planned.
And let your husband do all the clearing up!He did not say you will not be storm tossed, you will not be sore distressed, you will not be work weary. He said you will not be overcome.

Right Sticky, here's what you should do....
Place a comfortable chair (a daybed would be even better) in dappled shade. Languidly drape yourself over it, with perhaps a soft, lightweight blanket for effect. The look you're going for is that of a beautiful but ailing heroine from a novel, delicately indisposed with consumption. Of course you will need to frequently sip on a rescue remedy, which should be the alcohol of your choice you should seem to be bravely and selflessly suffering, for the sake of those around you.
Failing that, grit your teeth and ride it out, I'm sure you'll enjoy it once you've had enough to drink
I hope it goes well and you don't suffer too much.

Thank you all you very kind people. I know I'm ill because none of the alcoholic suggestions appeal one bit  Instead, I've been swigging tea as fast as I can brew it while the indefatiguable Mr SW has toiled and sweated and generally done stuff.
Numpty, I am very taken with your suggestion though it does have the odd flaw viz:
1. These days my 'languid' is more 'sprawl'.
2. If I use a blanket today I shall look less like 'beautiful (beautiful Of course, we've never met ) but ailing heroine' and more like lobster thermidor.
3. Consumption? Doesn't that require a certain delicacy of physique?
4. 'Bravely and selflessly suffering'? Hm. I intend to suffer as little as possible and, as soon as decently possible, I think I shall retire hurt to the pavilion.
But thank you. A good laugh was the perfect prescription. I shall take it with more tea, please :roll:If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

My advice Sticky, is to allow yourself to be shamelessly waited on, make an appearance for a short while, then retire to a spot all to yourself where you can lie down. Sadly, most parties just carry on with or without us. No need to get over-tired. (((()))) Feel better soon.
PS My OH always says things like: "You'll be fine" "You just have to sit there" and my favorite, "You're not that sick, are you?" All BS if you ask me. Every time I've sucked-it-up and gritted teeth, I've regretted it later...0 -
Sticky you are the lady of the house
you enjoy yourself.

Ah stickywicket,
Hope you got through the day ok and feeling better. All the comments made me laugh so much, that's just what you needed.0 -
Thank you, everyone and, jul, you are absolutely right – laughter is the best medicine (though keep taking the prescriptions meds, too, everyone)
Oddlly enough I got through it OK. Sat in the shade of the gazebo with everyone from 3.30-7pm(ish) albeit swigging mugs of tea instead of my – usually preferred – Chenin Blanc. By 7pm it was cool so everyone came indoors so I could still sit with them, in my recliner, still swigging tea. They left at 8.15(ish) and soon after that I started coughing and spluttering again but that was OK as my beloved had had a good time and I'd had not a bad one.
I have decided it's all three – the hay fever masked the cold so I methed and therefore had a 'post-meth-day' to complicate matters. Today I'm coughing and swigging and leaden-limbed again but it is all achieved and another leisurely day beckons.
I'm not very good at asking for help so I really do appreciate all your responses. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Sometimes the expectations of something are worse than the thing itself. Glad it went better than you expected and hope the payback isn't too bad.
Hope there's some chenin blanc waiting for you in the fridge for when you feel betterHe did not say you will not be storm tossed, you will not be sore distressed, you will not be work weary. He said you will not be overcome.

Morning SW, how's tricks today? I hope you are beginning to feel at least a little better in yourself. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Thank you again, everyone. It's not flu, bubbadog, because (a)I have my flu jab annually and (b)I'm able to get out of bed and complain but I'm starting to think it might be some sort of virus as it seems inordinately attached to me. The feeling is not mutual
However, my periods of feeling able to wash up, collect the laundry and shove it in the machine etc are slowly increasing and mostly I no longer have to ponder whether the effort of brewing a mug of tea will be worth the relief it affords.
Things are looking up. I'm grumbling therefore I'm getting better :roll:If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Mmmmm sounds wonderful :?
I hope the "improvement" continues.
Whether you want them or not, here are a few (((())))
Numpty0 -
I hope you had your radioactive suit on for delivering them, Numpty. Thank you. I'm feeling even more rubbish first thing in the morning and last thing at night but the middle of the day is getting better. Alas, it's definitely a tea-not-alcohol bug. I tried it (and failed) with a bottle of cider yesterday. Tasteless. It's starting to annoy me now.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.
