Osteoarthritis in both of my feet

I seem to be struggling at the moment with my feet more so my left foot I am waiting for steroid injections but apparently there is a long waiting list for this to happen, the colder damp weather seems to be making the pain and discomfort worse, I am going to start swimming to see if this will help with the pain and discomfort and to loose some weight hopefully, it's not easy living with arthritis, but just have to manage it best I can do, and keep taking my medication to keep the edge of the pain.

    Hi @Christian78

I hope it's not too long for your steroid injection and swimming helps a bit while you are waiting.

Have you tried changing your shoes for now for some extra comfort? My SIL was having trouble with her hips (I know it's not the same) cured almost totally (not though obviously she works at Amazon) by wearing skechers shoes. I only ever wear them or hotters myself. Insoles can also help too some people.

You are probably right losing some weight must take some of the pressure off sore bones, but won't cure existing arthritis.

    Take care

  • Hi frogmorton,

Thanks for your message, yes i wear sketches, and my wide fitting shoes which are called Airtox which cost well over 100 pounds and I use custom made insoles have done for over 8 years.

I do manage daily but take regular breaks to rest my feet as this helps ease the pain and discomfort.

But I hope I will get the injections soon.

Yes I think swimming will help my feet and get me fitter as well.

    Thanks for your kind words.

    Best wishes

  • @Christian78 my feet seem to be painful at the moment and aching alot with this damp wet weather and it also being colder.

Oh dear @ Christian I do very much hope you will get your injections very soon. I know the cold and damp seems to set most people's OA off really badly😕 Airtox look lovely - like skechers a bit pricey, but if they are worth it fair enough.

    Take care

  • Hi @frogmorton still waiting for my steroid injections my appointment has been Expedited what ever that means?, I am up and down having good days and then poor day's feet seem to be aching and pain comes and goes, this cold wet weather playing havoc with my AO Feet, yes Airtox are very comfortable and do help my feet alot, yes I have a pair of sketches but prefer my Airtox Snickers, but they help my feet when out and about.

    Best wishes :-)

Oh good speeded up I hope @Christian78 the sooner the better. At least your shoes are helping in the mean time 🙂

The OA I have doesn't like chilly weather either so wrap up warm when you're out.

    Take care now

Hi @frogmorton thanks for your message, expedited seems to be the opposite for me no sign of my appointment being speeded up yet think I will be waiting for a while yet my pain specialist seems to be very slow hopefully get to see someone in the new year fingers crossed.

Extra thick socks on when I go out keep my feet warmer cold weather isn't good with OA aching pain.

    Take care best wishes.

Hi @Twirlywoo5 thanks for your message, yes sometimes my ankles look very puffy and are sore at night my ankles always feel tight and stiff and both ankles can puff normal only one ankle at a time though or sometimes both ankles can swell up and are sore to touch especially if I haven't been resting my feet throughout the day.

I do also have damaged tendon on the top of my left ankle which can be painful length of damage is 3.5cm and a flat arch as well as OA.

    Best wishes

Hi @Twirlywoo5 yes I think your correct there more than likely to be a swollen joint yes my ankles puff up alot and are sore.

Having OA is bad enough never mind swollen ankles joints.

Does anyone know what naviculocuneiform disease is ?.

    Hope my spelling is correct?.

Google says that the naviculocuneiform (NC) joint is located in the middle of the foot. It consists of four bones: the tarsal navicular and the medial, middle, and lateral cuneiforms!

Is that what you suspect @Christian78 ?

Sounds like the 'cure' is a fusion operation. Let's hope once this Virus is under control you can get to the bottom of it🤞

Hi @frogmorton yes this what I was expecting but I have been told by a foot and ankle specialist on the Wirral in 2018 that it will be many years before an operation will be considered in this part of my foot as it can bring various results, so no operation any time soon.

All I have been told to do is carry on wearing my custom made insoles for the rest of my life and keep taking oral medication (for pain) and keep having joint injections under my pain specialist.

But sometime in the future when I can't walk anymore I guess I will have to have mid foot Fusion which can have various results apparently and at least a year to fully recover I have been told.

The foot and ankle specialist I seen in 2018 on the Wirral said to me I will be retired by the time you will need me again.

So left to struggle on in pain aching feet for the foreseeable future.

Oooh! That's not nice being given such a long time to wait @Christian78 I hope your foot hold out until then. The injection will help as and when you get it i am sure (((()))

Apart from arther there may be other things happening including inflammation. I had a pad of hard sinew which was inflamed by constant use under my arthritic joint. I can’t have more ops but wearing reinforced innersoles has helped me at least to get around. The hardened pad which was pressing against the joint every step has reduced.

Suggest an appointment with the pediatrist after you’ve seen the consultant or doctor? A pain clinic appointment may help?

A cushioned and supporting inner sole with a flexible upper which is still supportive can work wonders and I go along with the Pavers/Skechers branded foot ware that others suggest. I have just brought my second pair of leather walking trainer type of shoes.

    pits a grin, honest!
