Running with hip osteoarthritis
Hello,
I’ve just joined this group as I’ve been experiencing pain in my left hip. An x-ray has revealed arthritis in both hips and degenerative disc problem. (I had a prolapsed disc about 3 years ago).
I have now been told to stop running and in fact the pain and stiffness from my hip has made this impossible any way. I wonder if anyone has been able to carry on with running? It is an outlet for me and a way to de-stress. This has come on relatively quickly as I completed a 10k race in February.
I have now been referred by my GP to a specialist as she thinks I am very young to have this diagnosis (51). I would welcome any advice.
Thank you.
Julie

Hi @Manningj (Julie) welcome to the Versus Arthritis Online Community.
I see you are a runner who has Osteoarthritis in both hips and a degenerative disc problem too. I am very pleased you are being referred to a consultant for an opinion.
You are absolutely not alone in finding running good for their mental health in fact @DarreninBrighton is in a not dissimilar position to you:
Here is another thread on the subject:
I am attaching some information about staying active with Arthritis:
I hope your consultation comes through fairly quickly for you so that you can take some advice from a professional on your specific conditions.
Best wishes
Ellen.

Thanks so much Ellen.
I am seeing a physio at the moment who has recommended hydrotherapy. She has also suggested walking, the cross trainer, cycling and swimming to keep active. I’m not much of a swimmer so I’m looking to buy a nice bike.
It’s good to read that some people are still running but I’ve been told to stop for now as it could cause further damage. My physio has also recommended taking Naproxen for a while to get the inflammation down.
I will keep an eye on the forum for other tips for runners.
Thanks!
Julie

Just a quick tip re cycling.
My husband bought a bike when his hip prevented golf and long walks. But he soon realised he needed a different saddle. Once he got a new one all was well and he kept in good shape. I think if you can go to a good cycling shop for advice you're more likely to get it right first time.
Good luck!
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.
