Bilateral Ankle Arthrodesis

Has anyone had both their ankles fused? We would love to hear any tips and advice. My husband has had one ankle fused, and the other is deteriorating rapidly. ( the downside of playing semi pro football for 16 years). Might an ankle replacement be a better option for ankle number 2?Many thanks
