Hi, I just joined. Looking for advice. I have osteoarthritis in my knee and I keep trying different things. Nothing seems to work so far. Does anyone have anything that's helped them.

Hi @Deb66 welcome to the Versus Arthritis online community.

You are not the only new member who has joined recently with Osteoarthritis in their knee @Tamara1975 is also new and @Bella19 .

I don't know what help your GP has given you, but would suggest if you haven't already that you have a read of the following pieces of information:

Hi @Deb66 I also have knee arthritis. Have you had any physio treatment? They can help with strengthening the muscles that support the knee and range of motion. I also use heat and ice therapy, elevating my legs when needed and I wear compression knee sleeves. I also use good quality knee braces. Tens machine also helps. Have you asked your GP about pain medication? Hope this helps

I found the most helpful physiotherapy to be the following exercises which are actually for torn meniscus, as they are for both stretching and for strengthening but do not require much load-bearing, so are gentle on the knees. As they work systematically through the muscles you can easily tell which particular muscles are weaker and need strengthening.

There does become a point where exercises don't make any further improvement, and do nothing more than keep range of motion and also keep the muscles and ligaments healthy whilst you wait for knee replacement.

Are you a healthy weight? If you are a bit overweight then losing that extra weight can make a great deal of difference. I know losing weight is not easy though.

  • hi I have had a partial knee replacement 4 year ago but the other compartment of my knee is making some weird crunching noises I’m back to rheumatology on the 21st march hoping they will xray it and my hand all the best Denise 👍
