Knee OA affecting hip replacement
Hi all,
I am new this community and wanted to firstly say π, but also to ask for some advice.
I suffered with arthritis in my hips since a child. Had my left hip replaced 10 years ago at the age of 30. Which has been an absolute godsend! Difficult at the time with a 2yr old and 9 month old baby, but most certainly worth it in the long run.
Since, my knees have been getting progressively worse. I was back and to the GP with knee pain and was given more and more pain meds, which was not ideal!
Finally, over the summer I had a bad fall stepping out the back door. (I've had many over the years), but this really took me off my feet. My knee and ankle was in a poor state. So I went back to the doctors after a week or two as thought I may have done some damage. They finally sent me for a xray and within two weeks I was sat in front of a orthopedic consultant, who was lovely. Sad news was OA is in both knees, but my right he said was a stage 4. I have some loose bones floating about, which keep getting caught and this causes a lot of pain too. He said he wouldn't go in and do anything as could cause more damage. He has offered a knee replacement, but advised to try my best to keep going while im so young. I had no option when I had my hip replacement, after many failed attempts of surgery. I have opted to wait it out and had some steriods while I was there, which sadly have been very short lived in terms of pain relief.
I am progressively getting more pain in my replaced hip, which is on the opposite side to my bad knee. I'm worried with all the compensating my hip is doing is going to wear it quicker then I would like!
I wondered if anyone has experienced this with a replaced joint on the opposite side to a joint which is progressively getting worse?
I am a mum of 3 very active boys and also working. Keeping up with my daily chores at home and in work is causing me so much bother physically and mentally.
I trying to keep healthy, eat well, take all sorts of herbal remedies advised for OA. The pain and immobility is really starting to take its toll and is really frustrating.
Sorry for the long message. Today is a bad day, if you can't tell π

Hi @colleen20
Welcome to the online community,Its great you have come to us to express what you feel, you are in good company as we all suffer from some kind of Arthritis,i too have Osteoarthritis and have had both knees replaced plus one hip,i was in excrutiating pain before my ops and after going to my GP several times and eventually seeing a consultant on Orthpaedics it took a few years but i was much older than you are,was offered replacements and i took the offer up.I persisted and so should you no matter what age you are the pain factor should make you eligable. Have you been back to your GP to be referred back to the consultant? if not just go back and tell them how much pain you are in and the pain relief medication is not working. Hopefully you will be referred back as you were offered one when you saw the consultant.
Please keep on chatting on our forums as others will say what happened to them and may be of use to you.
take care and hopefully your GP will be sympathetic towards you. Also With your knees as they are it could put strain on your hip replacement.

Thank you Christine for your reply. That's really good feedback. I didn't think of going back to the doctors. The consultant had said he would review me in 6 months and we could take it from there. If it becomes unbearable I will go back and ask the question. π
