There is no doubt that you are struggling, and I empathise, but please spare a thought for those of us on here who are already chair-bound or reliant upon walking aids. My 'affectionate' nickname amongst those who know me? Lurch. It doesn't tickle my funny bone but it does theirs and when I catch sight of me walking I can see why I've 'earned' that moniker. DD

Ah Elaine, my walking stick days are long gone. That is a luxury I knew and now know to appreciate. I'll never return to those halcyon days - alas and alack! What about trying two sticks? I fully understand that this is an untenable thought but it may help your poor feet to better cope with what is being thrown at you. DD

Hi Elaine, You'll get up that hill.Think what you;ve manged already. Its not easy to lose weight. Try to be positive. There will be better days ahead. As for wearing trainers they do make your feet sweat try some baby powder in them. If this is what it takes to see you through 2 weeks...whats 2 weeks? I wish you well on Monday. May

I think the saddest thing is simply this: no-one will notice what's on your feet simply because people are generally too wrapped up in their own lives to fret about what others may or may not be wearing. I was in town bright and early today and, due to this thread, actually took note of how people with sticks, crutches and walkers were shod. The majority were wearing stylish flatties of the Mary-Jane type (me included) some were in trainers, some had lace-ups but all in light, bright summer colours. There was one older lady with a crutch in her right hand hobbling along in kitten heels and she looked ridiculous a) because she was wearing baggy Crimplene trousers and b) because you could see that her vanity was causing her pain. Utterly stupid but her choice.

You may be concious of what you are wearing but trust you me, no-one else will take a blind bit of notice. We may care about such matters, no-one else gives two hoots. If it really matters to you that much then wear the sandals and to hell with the complications. I now detest sandals. My feet get gritty and grubby and I can't easily wash them as me knees don't bend! DD

I have recently discovered some fantastically comfortable shoes that even my manky feet love, called Fly of London.

I walk very oddly cos of my knackered hips, knees and back and I lift my big toe to help balance, I've also got a bone spur on the heel of my right foot and very wide, high arched feet.

I've now got 2 pairs that I live in. They are made of very soft leather and have wedged heels so your foot remains in a flat position but you get added height, which for me is a godsend at 5ft 1" short.

They come up really big and I've gone down a size to get the right fit. Ive got both of mine from Amazon.

Maybe give them a try? Worse thing would be having to send them back for a refund.

I dont know have looked at site and ive never worn heels before really so not sure if they would be any good for me...They are expensive and as im on £99.00 a week ESA money isnt exactly flourishing...Spent £50.00 so far on shoes and slippers...
I know youre being helpful but i dont know whats right or wrong for my feet and its depressing me...

I would give anything to be able to walk in trainers or any other type of foot wear without pain, even orthotic shoes and inner soles offer no comfort,my last pair of "shoes" i brought were mens canvas ones.My toes all have lumps and bumps on them and the pads of my feet are so swollen it feels like there is a big rock under them,my right foot is so swollen even my old baggy slippers cut into it.Will not feel sorry for myself anymore, moan over.Mig

I couldnt care less if footwear is bright and jazzy...Its just that the style of shoes well even slippers i seem to be restricted to are really old fashioned...Some people try and cheer themselves up by getting their hair done, wear bit of make up....Im not that vain...It is just the pain im experiencing at the moment and its only just started, even hurts in bed....
I dont mind my stick, i need it..
Its just trying to adjust and though it seems small to everyone else, to me its just another thing wrong with my body that i feel down about....

I'm sorry Elaine; trainers are not helping.(I live in trainers but get swollen feet and after I've worn them a few hours and they do get sweaty in the heat and my ankles lock up. But I cannot find anything else, even slippers cause problems). Your bunion is painful and preventing you from exercising and doing household tasks. You are worried abut the weight going back on. It is VERY upsetting for you.

    Best wishes

Oh the trainers dont help you do they, thought they would but even got told by podiatrist that MBT ones dont help...It is confusing trying to find something that will do good, ease discomfort but will get there, not a lot in shops choose from however....
Been in touch with gym they say no treadmill so will just have to go on exercise bike bit more...
Its all about adjustment isnt it?
Thanks for your words of encouragement and kindness..
