@hips_dont_lie44 thanks. It is very hard I know how you feel. The pain is so much at times that it's impossible to do anything. Well done for managing your exercises I'm sure that will have a huge impact when having the surgery. Do you swim in a Hydrotherapy pool, it's so lovely in the hotter water really soothing 😊

  • I go swimming twice a week at a council leisure centre. My friend comes with me for company and incase I need a hand with my socks and shoes. It is nice and warm. We go in the sauna too, that is really nice and relaxing. I feel that I’m not as stiff after a morning at the pool. You should try it 🙂

@hips_dont_lie44 I try and go once a week to my local Hydrotherapy pool, it is so nice being able to move a bit more in there, but I do find getting in and out then changing hard, it causes so much pain i end up feeling worse the following morning. It really helped earlier on but find it harder now.

@Fran54 I will do, hopefully i will hear something back from doctors soon 🤞

  • Hi I am 5 weeks post hip surgery. My goal before surgery was to get as fit as I comfortably could and it paid off. My recovery is going very well. My prep involved aqua aerobics twice a week and reformer pilates classes and I made myself keep moving even though the pain was terrible. Up until 12 months before surgery I was a netball umpire and coach- your age is a plus. I am 66 years of age. Stay on top of your pain relief too. Its easier to keep active if you arent dealing with pain. Week 5 post op and my friends and family all comment on how the pain has left my face and vibrancy returned. All the best - it's a game changer.

  • Hi, thank you for the advice. I'm starting to feel more confident about it all now. So many comments on how everyone has got through it and getting back to normal life again.

I do think I need to push myself through regardless of the pain, aqua aerobics sounds like a good idea as i use Hydrotherapy pool anyway so could ensure to do some more physical exercises whilst in there rather than just swimming and stretching.

Well done on your recovery sounds like you're doing really well and can see light at the end of the tunnel!

I had a hip replacement 6 weeks ago, private not NHS. I am 57 and after years of being restricted by OA and the pain I am already seeing huge improvement and no pain. Yes it is scary and yes it hurts after the surgery but now I can look forward to 2025 pain free.

I went to the gym every day for 3 months before my op and walked daily until it hurt (about a mile!) it has enabled me to bounce back so much quicker than if I had been a couch potato.

  • Wow! That sounds like an amazing recovery. I wish I could go to the gym daily, just going to work and home daily is a huge struggle and im exhausted after (not sleeping great isnt helping)I am definitely going to try starting to do gentle stretches daily though from now on, i have some small weights i could try to include too. I know i need to, to aid my recovery. Need to push myself more. Thank you for sharing your story, it really helps ❤️

I did exactly the same! Spent months doing strength exercises on my legs knowing that I’d need these to help me through the other side. Best thing I ever did - that and training myself to sleep on my back, lol.

@emma86oneill Ooh that's good - 12 April will be here before you know it, and gives you time to get prepared.

  • Hi all,

New to this site I am seeing the consultant in two weeks time and have been told I have moderate arthritis in both hips but slightly worse on the right side. Yesterday I was sat down when suddenly I couldn’t move my right hip. The pain was off the scale and I couldn’t stay sitting or get up. This is the second time this has happened. I can’t express how bad it was I was sobbing with it. Have any of you had this with your hips and is it a trapped nerve? I think it must have been as it was a different pain to what I normally have. Please let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks

    Hello @1GeraniumJane,

Welcome to the online community! I hope you feel safe and supported here and enjoy your experience with us!

I am sorry to hear you are having issues with your hips, it doesn't sound very nice. I have arthritis in my hips too and this does sound familiar, my pain differs based on whether it's joint pain or a trapped nerve but I can now tell the difference.

If it feels different to what you normally feel then I highly recommend making a note of it and talking to your consultant about it when you see them to get their professional opinion.

I hope your appointment goes well and please keep us updated,

    Best wishes, Olivia x

    Hi @1GeraniumJane

I suffer from a similar thing, but my leg also goes numb and feels tight I went to the doctors and they think it's due to a nerve being caught where the bone growth is on my hip joint. Very uncomfortable and feels like you cannot straighten out. Mine comes and goes. Maybe worth going to the doctors or at least informing them so they know that your pain is worsening. They may look at different meds etc.

It's also worth keeping a pain diary so you can track when you feel different pains, this is helpful for you but also so the doctors can see of your hips are deteriorating quickly.

Good luck with it all and take care x

hi all - I’m new to the forum, but like this thread. I’m 47 and due to have THR in the next 3-4 months on my right, with my left not too far behind. Like a lot of the posters here, I’m trying to keep fitness up before surgery, but really struggling with pain and stiffness in my lower back and legs. Can anyone recommend any resources that might help?

  • Hi @hipsprings

I really struggle with stiffness which is what stops me being able to do much exercise. However, I do find stretching in the Hydrotherapy pool very helpful as the heat feels amazing and the salt helps you float so easier to move around.

I also use deep heat patches on my lower back whilst doing gentle exercise which seem to make it less stiff, and more recently started using tens machine as having issues with trapped nerves but that so far does seem to help with the pain in lower back.

I hope you manage to find ways of making it easier and more comfortable.

    Take care x
