Diagnosis yesterday for OA, i feel so numb

Hi everyone, i am so glad to have found a space to 'talk'….i'm not sure what else to do right now. Sorry but this will be a bit long.

I have had wrist pain for a few months and eventually went to the doctor, had bloods for RA and xrays. Told by Dr yesterday that i have moderate to severe OA in my left wrist. I was in an RTA 30 years ago when i was hit by a car while i was cycling. My left wrist, right knee, hip and lower back took the brunt of the crash. The doctor said this injury would be a contributory factor to me getting OA. I said to the Dr, so could this also be why i've had back and hip issues for so many years but always put it down to sports injuries? I was told to make another appointment, which i have for tomorrow.

I have always competed in cycling and running and have had physio for my right hip and lower back which i have had to keep mobile every day to be able to function. I stopped competing last year in cycling as i became unable to walk to the end of the street at home without pain and stiffness when i stopped. I have seen so many physios i must have spent thousands, and never got fixed.

On a daily basis now i never know if my leg will give way when i get up, if i can walk back from town once i get there (half a km) etc…and as i'm not working now i spend most of my days mobilising or lying on the floor, it's a full time job just keeping upright.

So i'm panicking that i have also got OA in my hip and that it's been undiagnosed for years. I find life very difficult to cope with generally and being unable to walk at the very least is unthinkable. I feel so selfish moaning, i'm sorry. I don't know what else i can do now, just wait for the appointment tomorrow and hope to god they send me for an xray, not to another physio

Have family member who had OA in his hip late 50s - due to running for 40years.

He had a hip replacement, and now 60 and now running again weekly and competing in half marathons.

keep your chin up, there’s always hope.👍

Hello @louiseJP and welcome to the online community,

First of all, please don’t feel selfish for sharing what’s happening to you. This is the place where we can all come to talk about how we’re feeling and to receive support from other members. We may not have the same story as you, but we know what it’s like to feel overwhelmed by the diagnosis of arthritis and I’m sure our members will be able to support and reassure you.

It’s good that you have another appointment with your GP tomorrow where you can explain more fully about your condition and ask to be referred for x-rays. Before you attend your appointment, perhaps you could jot down everything you want to say - it’s easy to forget things when you’re sitting in front of your GP. Have a look at this information sheet about osteoarthritis https://versusarthritis.org/about-arthritis/conditions/osteoarthritis/ which might give you some idea of how to explain your symptoms to the GP.

Do let us know how you get on tomorrow
