PMR and Coisone inj
Hi. I have been diagnosed with PMR. I have severe pains in my shoulders, wrists and hips in the morning time which eases off a bit during the day. I had a cortisone injection in my right shouder on Wednesday. Thinking this would ease the pain in that shoulder, I awoke on Thursday morning with practically no pain at all anywhere!! I am absolutely delighted with this result as I was not expecting it. How long would you think this would last. I awake every morning now hoping the pain has not returned.

Hi @Tapyeno and welcome to our friendly online community.
So glad to hear you have had such good results from your steroid injection already. As for how long it will last, everyone is different, but hopefully you will be lucky. Have a read through this link for more info.

Hi @Tapyeno,
Thanks for posting in the Helpline Online Community.
I'm pleased to hear your steroid injection is offering you some pain relief at the moment, and as suggested by @claudsl and stated within the link already shared, the effectiveness and duration of relief from steroid injections can vary. Steroid injections aim to control inflammation (and therefore symptoms of pain) but effects are, unfortunately, usually temporary.
For Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) patients will usually be prescribed oral steroids, which can be for up to 2 years, although your doctor will aim to prescribe the lowest possible dose for the shortest period of time due to possible risks and side effects. They may however suggest starting on an initial higher dose to get on top of the inflammatory condition and then taper the dosage down slowly.
You can read about PMR, and the oral steroid treatments, in the information shared below.
I hope this helps.
Best wishes, Helen, Helpline Advisor
