Have you taken yours yet? Don't forget trolley duty.

When you worked, how did you decide who should do the trolley rounds?

Yes, have taken my last pregablins, just the zopiclone to take now. I always did the tablets if I was on shift, well, I dispensed and another nurse would be there to check and run back and forth, just as I did when I was a junior staff nurse. Sometimes if the Drs were being a pain and wanting attention, then one of the other nurses would do them.

Once I was ward manager, it was one sure way of getting to see all your patients as well, sometimes I was pen pushing for hours, which I didn't train to do.

Must have been hard. I was always interested in the nurses what made them want a career, what did they hope they would become.

Because I was in hospital so much I used to see some of the same nurses and we became friends. They used to tell me about their boyfriends.

I still here from some of them. Some are still nursing. I was always the one for the young nurse to do her first injection.

I got to know some of our patients, those who were hospitalised for a long time, for one reason or another. We used to practice on oranges in nursing school, doing your first one was always a bit nerve jangling, then it just becomes second nature, like setting up drips, mind you, the machines control the flow rates now, we used to have to calculate the drops per minutes, we all had a tongue depressor in our pockets, with all the numbers on. Gosh, I am going back in time.
It is all automated now, which is good, that technology has advanced so quickly, to monitor and treat patients. We used to have to to 10 minutes obs, with the old fashioned BP machines, not the ones now, just press a button and it does it for you, they dont know they are born. It was very hands on, 30 plus years ago.

That is so true. I remember the old BP's machines.

Mind you when you see all this equipment in ICU how they know what is what I will never know.
I had tubes everywhere and machinrs blipping and another bleeping I really don't know how they manage.

Thr people who invent these machines must be so clever.

I know, there were more machines each year, more often than not we used to turn the alarms off, but don't tell anyone, the IV infusions used to drive you mad, bing bong, bing bong, all it was was a kink in the tube. The ICU machines are indeed, all very technical, but, you get used to them. Technological advances certainly have kept me alive, cardiac catheters were not heard of when I was training, not to mention the drugs, although we moan about them, they keep us going as well.

I saw this programme the other night it was about this lady in Australia well she had lost her leg.......she could not walk on the false legs as you know the leather how it rubs you in the grion.

Well they tried out an electric leg on her. She had to have several operations and when she had grown more bone they attached a special device in her leg.

Well some time later they bought the limb and fitted it to her. All she does is just take the leg off. When she want it she picks up the leg and itis like a magnet for example and she just here 's it bleep and it is on. No wooly sock or attachments.
    It was great to see.

    I can always hope.

For sure love, for sure, hope is always there, no matter how bad things get. The one thing that we should never abandon. The man in the big brother house, is a double amputee and he has a bionic leg, that whirs and cliks and moves like a normal knee, computer controlled.

Early evening to one and all. Rain, well, it has been bouncing down, a deluge for hours, just eased off now. It was difficult for driving, glad I wasn't behind the wheel.

Went to see podiatrist who ummmmed and arrrrrrrrrred about my blisters and spots on my foot...........  We went through the usual, have you used any different wash powders, etc etc etc. No, nothing. I was busy talking to the student nurse who was observing for the day, she was very nice, will make a good nurse, I could tell.

Anyway, that's by the bypass. He could not come up with a diagnosis, it might be fungal, it might be bacterial, "REALLY", what a genius. I said, never mind I am off to the GP tomorrow, he said get him to look at it and maybe refer you to a dermatologist....................no thanks I am not seeing any more ologists

So, he sorted my nails and removed some sloughy skin, bet you are glad you know that.
