Hi DD, good question - I was beginning to wonder this too.

    So Mike - how's things?

    Speedy
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi DD

Nice to hear from you - how you doing?

I'm in a bit of a funny period now, with my operated leg having some bad days and some very good ones but my unoperated leg having lots of very bad days!

It seems as though the arthritis there is getting worse, which it probably is but I'm also more aware of it as its only in the one leg.

Its so bad I don't think I'm any more mobile thn before the op but do take heart from the very good days I get with the operated leg.

I'd like to have the other leg operated on ASAP but the consultant wants me to wait a year. We'll see!

    Hope you are doing OK?

    Mike :)

I have been away for a while now, not really for any specific resons other than looking after my son quite a bit during the school hols. Though he looked after me quite a bit too!

As I said to DD earlier, by un operated leg is pretty bad now and I guess I was quite down for a week or so. Saw my Dr last Friday as my sick note ran out & he signed me off for another month.

I'm bored and fed up at home but really the pain in the un-operated leg is very bad and I'm actually limping on it.

Talking with my Dr and wife, we decided the operated leg is actually doing really well but the other leg IS getting worse and dragging me down.

But whe I do come on these boards I realise how lucky I am compared to lots of people. Then I feel guilty especially seeing that poor lady Janice ....

Hope you are all doing well?

    Speak soon!

    Mike :)

Don't try to do so much. It was a major procedure and things take time to heal. I hope you are still using a stick at least when walking, to take the strain off the new joint and ease the strain on the poorly leg. If you are not, then no wonder the un-operated leg is protesting! Take time, and be kind to yourself and both your new and old joints. DD

Hi Mike, how many weeks post op are you now?

I'm beginning to go a bit stir crazy off work too ... I don't know how I'll cope when I return, but being at home isn't good for me either ...

I'm sorry you are having problems.

I don't have a second hip awaiting an resurface-replacement - my other hip already has a THR (13 years old) .. and I have always considered it my weaker leg until post op of course when it suddenly had to start being the lead leg. There was a period post op when it really started protesting - and the reason I'm telling you this is because I think it was due to the new hip not hurting anymore, but nor was it pulling it's weight properly and so the old hip was being expected to be A LOT MORE active AND do all the work... Now my new hip is doing a more equal share of the work this has improved.

I appreciate that having to be the lead leg the un-op leg has probably deteriorated faster than it might have done otherwise, but you could also have similiar affects to me.

When is your 6 month appointment?

    Hi both!

DD - not used my sticks at all for over 2 weeks now! I'll have a go with 1 again, as I thik you are probably right!

And I think you are too Speedy! My next appointment is scheduled for next Feb. One consideration for me will be the 6 mths off work rule. I'm going to have at least 3 mths off this time so maybe limiting the amount I could have off after the next op. Unless I wait the year!

Seeing my boss next week for informal chat. She a long standing friend so it will be an honest chat!

Hope you 2 are OK - the sun is out her in Birmingham!

Strangely enough, Mr King, I think I'm right too! You hip replacement/knee replacement people want the world and you want it NOW. :D Give your bodies a chance to recover and you will get the world. Be kind to yourselves and be patient - it will all come right in the end. Meanwhile, use those sticks! Regards to Mrs King. DD

Hi Mike- what no sticks anywhere?!!!

No wonder the old legs are complaining ...

I'm using my one crutch for any decent length of walking even though I want shot of it now.

Like DD says -we're an impatient bunch.

Without the stick do you limp? What about with?

............ seems like I'm being an idiot!

I do limp a bit - on my unoperated leg!

I'm going to start using the crutch again when I go out anywhere more than just a short walk!

Trouble is somedays I feel pretty good snd get carried away!

    Hi BC

As a football fan I'd like to say its nothing to do with me.
As a husband and dad I'd say his behaviour is just unspeakable!

    What do you think?

    Hi Mike

I'm 18 weeks post op today (I think!) and I'm still needing to use one crutch - not all the time, but certainly by mid afternoon I feel I need it if I'm walking even a short distance..

I'm also very stiff when I get up after sitting at my desk at work, or just sitting watching TV.. the stiffness passes off after walking round for a couple of minutes..

Sorry that your other hip is now causing so much trouble.. when you get that one done too you should feel SO much better!!

Hope that you meeting at work goes OK..

Let us know how you get on.

    Hi Marion

Its 10 weeks since the op for me. I too get stiff after sitting for a while. When I had my 6 weeks check up the Registrar wasn't keen for me to return to work when he heard I had a desk job. I always thought it would be easier for us than for people who' s job involved a lot of standing.

I'm going to resume using 1 crutch as from today.

How long were you off work for? I've been signed off for another 4 weeks, making 12 in total, if I go back then.

    Mike :)

That, Mike, sounds like a plan. Use your support for all walking, even wandering around the house. Another four weeks off work is good as in I don't think you are truly back to full-fitness yet. POst op there is often a big difference between what one thinks one can manage and what one ACTUALLY can manage. Do some gentle exercise each day and take care. Is Mrs King pleased to have you about for another month, or is she able to escape to the sanctuary of her work? DD

    Hi DD and Speedy

Forgot to take my crutch with me when I went out today!

And yep, Mrs K does escape to work - lucky her!

Just watching the dramatic Eastenders now! Peggy leaves tonight!

    Hi Mike

I went back to work at 13 weeks... but on a phased return basis..

It was very hard those first 2 weeks back -. I had to go to bed as soon as I got home in the afternoon .. absolutely exhausted..

Definitely keep using the one crutch for a bit longer Mike -

    Mike,

I keep a crutch in the car, then I get a walk out to the car without it but have one with me for when I get there. I'm less likely to forget it when leaving the house to walk somewhere as to walk there and back I know I'll need it.

    Hi Speedy

Good idea mate but I always have one in my boot! Still forget to use it!

My wife says she will make sure I use it tomorrow!

    How you doing, anyway?

Hi Mike, mine is on the seat.

I ache a bit after physio yesterday - it was a very productive and all over session - aiming at increasing my body's functionality ... posture, gait, core stability, identifying muscles which are too tight, too weak etc Got lots of exercises to do - feel quite positive about it all. Though will be quite a challenge to do my whole body workout - (3x a day!!) Shall aim for twice on week days and once or twice at weekends.)

My right hip is definitely getting stronger and I don't really think of it as my op leg anymore.

Have you ever tried a walking stick? If it gave you enough support you could have a fold up one and keep it in your pocket. I wish they did portable fold up crutches!

    Hi Speedy

Went and did some shopping with my wife and son today - new school shoes and trainers for a 13 yr old! lol I was glad to escape to Costa Coffee to 'rest my leg' while my wife dealt with the shoes!

I did remember to take my crutch and did find it useful - esp. when standing still. Seem to be in less pain tonight.

    Hope you are OK too?

    Mike :)
