How you doing mjking?

Hi Mike, escaping to Costa sounded a good plan, very wise!
I think as long as you only lean on the crutch as much as you need, it doesn't hinder improvement - and if it helps with your pain it is definitely worth remembering.
I took S to athletics today (obviously I don't join in) but I got in plenty of exercise walking outside to enocurage them all in cross country practise and between and across both gyms etc.
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Its only been 3 days but I'm finding using the 1 crutch (on the unoperated on hip) is helping quite a bit.
But I'm still suferring from the arthritis in that hip. It seems the crutch is actually helping my operated on side, supporting it.
Makes a kind of scense if that leg is weak!
I dunno really!
How's everyone else doing? So many on here are so much worse off than me and so much braver too!
Mike0 -
If you are using the crutch on the opposite side to the operated hip, then it will suport that hip. If you use it on the opposite side to the arthritic hip, then it will help that one. Aways use a stick/crutch on the opposite side to the affected joint to gain the most benefit - well, that's what all my physios have told me over the years. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi DD
I'm getting on a bit and I'm not sure I understood what you said! My unoperated on hip is hurting the most so should I have the crutch on that side?
That's what I'm doing now but it seems as though your physio would say it should be on the operated side.
My wife says use both!

Yep, use it on the opposite side to the pain, so if your left hip is hurting the most, hold the stick in your RIGHT hand, and vice versa. Use the stick for support as you swing the affected leg forwards - it does take a little co-ordination skill, especially if the stick is n ot in your dominant hand. The strain of the affected joint is taken across the body and off the joint. Hope this helps. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

I ditto this and like your wife says, if both hurt - use both!!

Hi Mike
You've got a real dilemma - you've got pain/discomfort in both hips, but for different reasons (ie one's recovering from the op; the other needs the op!)
It sounds like you might need to use a crutch/stick on both sides - until your operated hip is a bit more 'settled'.. (sorry if that seems a 'backward step')
If you don't want to do that, you should be using one crutch/stick in the hand OPPOSITE your worst hip - ie if your right hip is the most painful, you should hold the crutch/stick in your left hand.. (as DD said).
Best wishes

Hi everyone!
Thanks for the advice! I'm clear now! Use 1 crutch on the 'good' side or use both!
I think it will be crutch on right side and see how we get on!
Hope you are all OK?

You've got it, Mike and good luck. In answer to your question, no. Never mind, eh? DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Thanks DD
Your last point doesn';t sound good.
What's up?
Mike0 -
Psoriatic Arthritis. I've reduced my steroids to only 10mg per day and the pain has increased in accordance. My left elbow looks as tho a sheep is attached to it, such is the level of flaking skin. My doc has also put me on a BP med (I have raised BP thanks to the side effects of two drugs that I have for the arthritis) so I now have low-level 24 hour nausea. And it's raining. Never mind, it will pass, all things do, and I am sure I can adjust. I have to! There is absolutely no point in moaning, but I do feel glum about it all today. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

That sounds bad! I have high BP and it delayed my first op by 9 months! Could do the same for my 2nd one too!
I have days when I feel really fed up too but at least I know I will be cured at some point.
Are you home alone? Probably a walk or trip to the shops would help?
Mind you, sometimes I don't want any bright suggesstions I just want to be fed up!
It seems to help and I do feel a bit better after!
Mike
PS Watching Jeremy Kyles usually cheers me up! Or gets me angry!0 -
I am home alone, which suits me fine! I'm not going out today as it is raining quite heavily at the mo and I am frightened of falling - crutches can skid quite suddenly - hit a wet leaf and I'm down and my knees do not bend sufficiently to allow for rising, plus I have to put the wheelie bin out later so need to conserve my energies for that as it is a bit of a battle! 51 and can't put her bin out. Sad old bat!Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Operated on leg and hip continues to get better.
Unoperated on leg and hip continues to get worse! Much!
Back using one crutch, which does seem to help.
Starting to think about returning to work in 2 weeks time but need help with the pain in my unoperated on side. Going to go back to my Dr later in the week.
My boss is being very good. Visited me at home last week and said not to retrurn to work until I waas 100% fit and then it would be a phased retrurn ...............
Hope everyone is well?

I spent a while using my stick in the wrong hand for my bad side etc. What a difference it makes when you get it right. If it helps, then its a good thing!
Getting the pain relief right is essential if you are going to back to work too. I hope the doctor gives you some good tips.
Take care Mike.

Your boss sounds understanding, which is a good thing. I hope using the stick eases the strain on the bad side: is it worsening, or is it rather that the other side is now so good the contrast is much more apparent? How's Mrs K coping? Any joy on number 4? DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi DD!
number 4 is starting to make its way into my head! Not sure about reaching the body yet!
I think the pain in the unoperated leg IS getting worse but I also think I'm more aware of it now its gone from the other one!
Pain was really bad yesterday, probably the worst its ever been. Was with me when I got up and stayed with me until 3.20 pm! Didn't go away but suddwnly became bearable. It was like a huge weight lifting off me!
Mike0 -
Well, I just had to ask!
I am glad the pain shifted a little in the afternoon, it does help, doesn't it, when it eases off. I never question why, I just feel thankful that it's tolerable and get on with things! I suspect that you are more aware of it as the other is feeling so much better. Persevere with the stick, if not two, just tog ive everything a fighting chance. Regards to Mrs K. Hope we are all well tonight?
I've been a bit off lately - partly with my arthritic side and partly 'cause I got a very nast bite from some kind of insect and then quite a heavy cold!
Feeling better now & going to venture out on my own tomorrow for first time in about a week!
Will be using at least 1 crutch (on operated side) as it does seem to help.
I could have begun sleeping on my side as from last Monday but I've just about got the hang of seeping on my back so I'm sticking with it.
Off to see my Dr on Friday about when I can return to work. Don't honestly feel I can yet, but SO bored at home!
Take care everyone ......
Mike0 -
Hi Mike - must be a lot of bugs about in Brum - I have got that heavy cold now ... horrid isn't it?!
Very commendable re sleeping on your back ... I move around from side to side during the night and don't miss the back sleeping at all.
Hopefully you will pick up with the walking where you left off. I haven't been working so much on my walking either - been focusing on physio, swimming and doing more normal activities around the home.
Keep us updated re work.

Hope everyone is well today? At least its not raining in Birmingham today!
Saw my Dr on Friday and told him I was in tons of pain in my arthritic hip and some in the operated on one too. He told me the arthritis would get worse every day!
He gave me some stronger painkillers and signed me off work for another month! Talk to my boss about a phased return in November, depending on how I am.
Dr thought my idea of going swimming was a good one but my cold returned yesterday so I can't go today!
Life is tough!
Mike0 -
It's raining here, the first of five wet days to come. Sodding weather. Your doc is right, sadly, at least we can all slide gradually downhill together! On reflection, should you have had both done at the same time? DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0
-
Hi DD
It wasn't offerred and we didn't think to ask for it! From what I can gather, its not normally done.
Now I wish I had but that's 'cause the operated on hip is so much better now. But that wasn't so until recently so 2 ops at the same time would have been very tough!
But its frustrating to have the op, have the one hip be so much better and one that is so bad!
How are you doing?
Mike0 -
Hi Mike#
good to see you popping up
Glad you will be swimming when the cold goes away
I say the doc was cheering then - it will get worse every day - proper ray of sunshine there
Love
