Oh Toni what are you like
Bless, all that wasted water..I bet thats how you feel.
ive got to invest in 2 waterbutts myself as we get some much off the garden room all going to waste.
My lettuce need thinning out too but i use the leafs in salads instead of just chucking them. Did all my lettuce in buckets last yr & just pulled them all young & used them.
Did you know you can also use young radish leafs as salad too?Im just off out there to plants some runners before it rains again. Grounds just about right for planting now weve had the heavy down pours, i wasnt looking forward to breaking it all up.
Ive got a ''Forgotten skills of cooking'' book & & its great for all these tips.
Im trying to rest up as much as i can so i'll try to keep posting.
    take care all, debs

    Hello busy gardening peeps!

Can anyone advise on me runner beans? Only planted seeds last week in pots in the greenhouse and they are already about 6 inches tall and the roots are coming out the bottom of the pots! Worried they might actually be triffids!!!:  Question is this - am I ok to plant them straight out without hardening them off first (they are going in a container) or should I try to repot them into bigger pots for a bit. Any advice welcome!

    Thanks all!

    Tilly xx

Oh and Toni, you must be so cross about the water butt!!! I have done that myself more than once!

i have some delphiniums and phlox to plant out. Sunny or shady border? They didn't put any instructions on the label. From memory ( many years ago) I have planted delphs in full sun before.

I have knackered my back trying to pull out weeds and cut brambles today.

    Hi everyone
Its great to see everyone so busy! I have been strimming bushes today - and tonight I know it.
I have had a little giggle reading the beans posts - last year I grew beans - just planted the seeds in the ground, put some sticks in and whey they grew and grew - gave them to family & neighbours, ate them, froze them - not growing them this year - still getting through last years batch!

Thanks Rehab and Toni for the runner bean tips! Much appreciated. I like your approach Caterina - might try that!

Sorry about the slugs Toni. I've been having problems with the sparrows eating my lettuces (and everything else) but not with slugs - maybe the sparrows are eating the slugs as well! Shall I send you some of me "spare" sparrows?

Right, off to plant me dado rail seeds now! Any advice on what sort of compost is needed Toni?

Well beans are surviving outside and today I have risked planting out two "tumbling tom" tomato plants in a pot. Wot's the betting we have a frost tonight .

Can anyone advise how to know when my new pots are ready to dig up? I have read, variously, that they are ready when they flower (which they are doing) or when they have finished flowering and the foliage starts to die back. I suspect it might just be a case of rootling round in the soil to see if there are any pots but any advice would be welcome.

    Thanks!

spuds will be ready next week in our garden (West of london). I must say our garden is looking lovely this year. we are surrounded by apple and plum trees, blackberry bushes, privet hedge , laurel hedge and laurel tree and one lovely Cherry tree grown from incy wincy plant.

One problem area is my clematis seems to be dying off in places. It has bloomed beautifully but then the whole stem goes brown. Is this just natural after flowering or is it dying? It is planted in a pot against a wall and frame.

I have had my clematis for a number of years and have two varieties they are both in spectacular bloom at the moment but are "woody" at the bottom stems - They have always been like this - I dont think that it means they are dying, I would post a photo but dont know how lol. This morning I have been out cutting the back lawn and pottering

Aha! Good to see a gardening thread. I have just got into it this year.
My problem is i have planted so many seedling i am running out of space to put things. Especially the veg!!

I have broccoli, red cabbage and onions still in a seed tray pondering what to do with them. I have nalready planted out my butternut squash and potatoes.
I read you can plant stuff between the potatoes but i dont think my veg seedlings would be suitable

hi dotty you snuck in there, im new to the garden stuff also. not been brave enough to try veg yet except tomato plants, not sure if its to late to try anything else now. went a bit mad with the flowers instead

Thanks Rehab and Cat. I think, having read your comments and the info on the link provided by Rehab, that they need to have their roots shaded. They get full mid day sun and the roots are very shallow (it was given to us like this). Also they probably need a feed. But I am keeping an eye on the stems, woody is a good description. If they weren't flowering so beautifully I would think they were dead.

    Thank you for the info.

    Tomato questions.

My toms are quite leggy and about 5ft tall now. They look healthy and have four trusses of tomato flowers on each plant. My questions (1) when do I pinch out the top to stop them growing? (2) Do you stop them after a certain amount of trusses or wait till they're a particular height?

Elizabeth! On Gardeners Worl one of the presenters said that you should not feed Clematis whilst they are in flower... I missed the reason why, maybe you could do some research into this?

Okay Rehab, will do. Thanks for letting me know.

I would do it now Linda I woulld think you would have at least 5 trusses by now.. pinching out the tip puts all the plants energy into producing fruit .

    Thanks Len willdo

Hi everyone, I hope your all enjoying the sun & the gardening.
Just thought i'd throw in a laugh, well i wasnt laughing at the time..

I went out in the greenhouse the other day & my cucumbers that are doing so well had a load of the leaf missing. I came inside fuming looking for the shed keys muttering under me breath that something has had a free meal & cursing.
i went outside & put slug pellets down all round the greenhouse then went inside to sprinkle some in the grow bags.
There it was the little blighter, fast asleep with a full belly in the growbag  It had even had a bite outta one of the tomato plants :x ..A snail :x Lets just say it had its last meal & wont be coming back.....

Just a tip for anyone that has masses of slugs & snails in the garden. If you just throw them out the garden they will find there way back to food, clever things they are  best to squash them. I check the garden every day for them as i get loads. Im trying to persuade the OH to part with a can of his beer so i can do the yogurts pots, i dont like using slug pellets cause of the birdies eating the slug/snails. Not sure of my chances getting his beer though

Sun is shining here & i must go snail hunting before they eat anything else out there.
    Happy gardening, debs
Ps ive been hiding in my greenhouse if youve missed me :lol:
