    Hi DD,
I'm so sorry....even if it was the result you say you expected I'm sure its not the one you wanted to hear.
Keep on the diet.....I know its one of those tomorrow things  I'vehad plenty of those  As for the too young.....knowing you I'm sure you'll be able to change their mind about doing it earlier.
Hope you are enjoying your curry and enjoy tomorrows dinner with your friends.

    Love

So much of this dross is down (up?) to the afflicted one. The docs and surgeons can do a certain amount, the rest is up (down?) to the patient. Simples. Rocket science it is not.

This is the required boot up the Harris. I have made a good start with the weight loss (slow and steady, I am not a complete idiot (yup, some parts are missing)) and I knew that being fat would be an issue even before the dreaded spectre of OA raised its very ugly head. A few years ago I lost a huge amount of weight thanks to no meds, being bed-ridden and living on a diet of Hula Hoops and full-fat Coke. That was all I wanted to eat, it was very much all I did eat and the weight fell off. The pain didn't but hey-ho, one cannot have everything. This is, oddly enough, a good thing.

Right, the wine awaits. Waaaaaaaaaaaah! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah! t23177.gif DD

Well dd I must admit that I was a little disappointed for you, I did so hope that he would give you a new knew within a couple of months and you would be sort of fixed

But as it was what you were half expecting (reading your post) I am glad that you are not too down hearted. I know that you will get your knee before the estimated three years as you have the determination to do everything to make it happen. We on the forum will also be behind you,

Well I hope you enjoyed your curry and laguar and have a brilliant time with your friends tomorrow.

    Take care
    Thinking of you

    Hi DD

I am sure I posted s message about an hour ago, but it doesn't t seem to have appeared!

I am so disappointed for you.

I wonder if the 3 year wait is related to the government's wish to save money by deferring hip and knew replacements for as long as possible... I also wonder if you were a private patient then you could have the op at age 52! (ok call me cynical..)

Hope you enjoy your curry and beer.

Aw DD I am so sorry that you didnt get the news you were hoping for. Well done on the steady weight loss and keep up the good work, its so hard to lose weight when you cant really exercise and if you are anything like me, really enjoy your food. I am sure you will get your surgery before you are 55 as you seem determined. Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy your evening with your friends. Sending you Hugs xx

dd i know you do not do hugs but you need one at this time it makes me so mad when they use age as an excuse not to give the help needed if you were 3 years older would they then do it straight away so why not now your quality of life is just as important as theres weight well i understand that it the anastetic that is harder to workout for larger people. so leaving hugs and pinching all the chocolate and pies val

OK, I am back and it went pretty much as I thought it would. I am too young, too fat and in too high a risk category for infection due to the PA meds. The too young surprised me, the other two didn't. I have been steadily and slowly losing weight (dropping the steroids has helped that) but diet-wise it has been very gradual as I am trying (and getting closer to succeeding) in altering my eating habits. This is the boot I need to ditch the beer and wine, thus stopping having any treats whatsoever. Water here I come. Whoopee.

As regards the infection risk he explained that I would have to stop the anti TNF and meth for a fortnight before and a fortnight after. **** that for a game of soldiers, two weeks before won't make that much difference to immune system levels, so it will be for a month. I have noted in the past that after two weeks sans meth I have felt considerably better in myself, the same with missing the big H for one dose. It's a no brainer.

He wants to 'do' me (oo-er Missus!) when I am 55. **** that for a game of soldiers too, another three years of this is untenable.

Right, I am off for a curry and some laguar! Way-hey! Total abstinence will begin, but not just yet. We are off to our greatest friends for dinner tomorrow. There will not be a definite day to begin this dreary life (change the attitude Daisy!) but alterations will be made. It's only in my interests, after all.

Thank you all so much for your support today, I cannot tell you how much it was appreciated. DD

PS. My BP was astronomic - I wonder why?

Oh DD I am so sorry to hear that (sorry I am late on this one), it's so unfair that you have to tick boxes to get help. I suppose being too young could be seen as a compliment really but won't help your pain. I can fully sympathise with you on the weight front I too have put weight on due to the inability to exercise and the ease of eating if you are feeling down. To be honest after school holidays I am going to join slimming world it's a great eating plan and you can eat so much you don't feel like you on a 'diet' as you can eat as much fruit, veg, meat, fish as you want.

Is there any point in getting a second opinion or any chance of going private? Hope you enjoyed your curry and have a great time with your friends.

Sending you love and happy thoughts. Xxx

Oh no, anky, it's far from unfair, he is/was absolutely right! I have to give myself the best shot at achieving a good recovery and this is the way to go. I am only sulking 'cos for me it means giving up stuff I hold dear and I currently lack the energy to effect such a seachange (probably because I is a fat old bag!) I have taken the first steps tho - been and bought a load of **** to help reduce the hunger pangs!

As for you valval, don't eat all the goodies in one go - you will be a poorly girl! DD

Oh , DD , I know you didn't hear what you wanted , but don't let the bees get you down . As you know , I was told to lose weight , and I have but fully expect to be told to lose more when I see the sulky rheumy at the end of the year ; think it's their way of saying , sorry but we need to save money for a couple of years ! Sadly , we suffer but they have all the power . Try to lose weight but don't starve as with an illness like this we need to be strong enough to deal with it from day to day ; I only manage to lose 1 or 2 lb a week being unable to exercise at all , but so far have lost nearly 4 and a half stone since last november . Very slow but steady ; you'll get there ! Jillyb

I think we may have a DD impersonator here as the real one was concerned about her worsening asthma last week. Try sugar free chewing gum, boiled sweets, whatever else you like to suck – within reason.

    Hi DD,

you sound very matterfact (if disappointed that the surgeon didn't agree to new knees within the next few months.) I have every confidence you will lose the weight needed and convince them to give you new knees before you are 55. I'd love to know where they pull these idea ages from. With worst case scenerio new knees in 3 years V previous scenerio - swollen and agonising knees forever - life IS looking up!!

    Take care,

    Speedy
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

Not once did I think that he was saying all of that as part of a money-saving exercise, maybe I am too naive! I am the classic steroid shape, fat middle, thinnish arms and legs, so this is another spur to help me finally get off them, once and for all. Come Christmas I should be down to miniscule amounts, if not off them altogether, so that will make for an extra hellish time (on top of the hellish time it already is) but hey ho, it's for my benefit, yes?

Having stocked up on me favourite Gitanes I only had one on Saturday night so I was a good-ish girl. I have been weighing myself fairly regularly over the past few months and another pound has gone at some point in the past fortnight, so that is a good thing too. I was a size 22, now I'm a 20. I'll get there, only two dress sizes to go. DD

well done with your weight loss dd

sounds as though you are losing the weight nice and steady which means it is less likely to come back on.

one or two pounds a week is healthy and i think is the recommended target.
By christmas (dont know how many weeks away) you will have lost a great deal of weight.....new outfit comes to mind

Believe me, mig, he was doing you a favour. I wish my consultant had never started me on the steroids (at the time I was off all meds except sulpha and not doing well) so she thought she would be helping. She did, too blasted well!

Thank you for the kind words Julie, I am dreading Christmas as we will still be in this very unfriendly-for-arthritics- house, with both aged mums staying. I don't want to do Christmas but I cannot say that, can I?

jillyb1, I owe you an apology. I keep forgetting to say well done on such a terrific weight loss! What a noble effort by you, because it is far from easy as we all know, but you have made a sterling effort there and achieved a huge amount. I'll send you a cream cake as a reward! DD

Could the cream cake be covered in chocolate and brazil nuts please , DD ? Never dreamt of eating them before ; but now that I can't have them , get awful cravings for chocs and cream ! Well done to you on such a good start though , it's surprising how the odd pound lost here and there starts to add up . Keep it going and don't give in to the gitannes too often ! Jillyb

Jillyb1– I think you ought to qualify as slimmer of the year (9 months?) for such weight loss under such difficult circumstances. That’s a fantastic achievement! Well done, you!

DD – I am 100% sure you, too, will manage the weight loss stuff and get your spanking new, titanium enriched knees in a couple of years or so. I admire (and agree with) your refusal to pin the blame on money saving exercises.

However, I’d urge you to re-plan your Christmas which, currently, sounds unnecessarily damaging to your health. (Especially your BP?) What about taking the mothers for a few days in a hotel? No steps, no cooking. I’ve never done it but imagine with a little forward planning you could find somewhere nice which would avoid the enforced, Hi-de-Hi-type jollity. (Though I imagine you’d be a shoe-in for the knobbly knees.)

You often (quite rightly) tell people on here to put themselves first in certain situations as that will, ultimately, be of most benefit to those around them. Well, here’s where it all comes back to bite you on the bum, girl. This is your 2-3 years. Your needs come first. Get it right.

By the way, I've just done 1/4 hr. trotting on my exercise horse. Lost 0.3k. No other arm or leg exercises involved. Just sat there. Apart from a few rising trots when my knickers dug in.

Oh what a killer of a last line! I too have been trotting a little today but in a different sense of the word.

Ah, Christmas in a hotel with the mums. NO WAY José. One will be 91 by then, is stone deaf and her mantra is 'I always spend Christmas at home.' The other will be 87 and is just plain awkward. It's bad enough her coming here for a fortnight and feeling 'cheated' by the flying visit, I get the sulks for about ten days before, lots of 'helpful' advice during and the sulks again after. Mr DD is delighted that he can now escape back to work, he used to have an enforced ten days (which helped me, sort of). I have suggested we go to a restaurant for lunch - from the horrified reactions from the pair of 'em you would have thought I had suggested giving them a lovely dose of clap. DD

    Hi DD
I agree with sticky....is there no way round Christmas.....why do they have to come to stay....do they live far away?
What about Mr DD can you not enlist his help to say no to it or to at least work round it a bit?
As Toni keeps reminding me.......where i'm concerned its Do as I say and not as I do"!!!!!!!!! so sounds a bit the same with you
You have time to think it over and try to figure something out.
I dread Boxing Day.....thats the family party {Peters family} remember the picnic the other day  }....we take it in turns to have it....so it comes round once every 4 yrs.....I think thats bad enough. Have to go every year but only to host it once every 4.....get your thinking cap on and rope mr DD in to helping you decide on something else.

    Love
