Elna, I'm so impressed with how you're dealing with this - openly, honestly, admitting your fears but facing it square on. If all your surgeon's ops have gone right so far that is a big, big positive which I know you'll grab with both hands. Please keep us in the loop.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

    Hi Elna

He didn't say anything about the cage while he was performing the op but he did say I won't have to wear one after it, which is what I asked.

I don't mind the cage while asleep, just didn't want to wear one for weeks. He did say I may have to wear a collar, after op ,that I don't mind.

Please keep us updated. Take care. And you are in my thoughts.

    Hi Elna
My consultant said that it was better to have surgery on my back now rather then wait till it becomes unstable...and said to watch out for the symptoms you are having...but you know me....I will end up waiting...but I must say he sounded very confident about the surgery....I know you will face this like everything else you have gone through...you really do have the right attitude.
More hugs coming your way ((((())))
    Love

Oh Elna, no one wants to hear they need a major op. It is good however that they have found out why you feel as you do and can remedy the situation. Have they said how long you will have to wait and how long the recovery will be? This op will need some serious planning.

Thank you all again for your messages. They do help immensely. I have now wiped away my tears and have fully accepted that this op has to go ahead and the sooner the better as far as I am concerned. I do not want my symptoms to get any worse as I do not like having pins and needles and numbness in my hands and my arms not working as they did and my legs not always doing as I want them to do. I tire easily by the end of the day too, which is new. If I have to live with this after the op then so be it but I do not want it to deteriorate any more. There is the chance that these symptoms lessen or go away after the op so I am holding on to that.

I am only unhappy that I shall not be able to continue to look after my grandaughter to help out when her mummy is working which I loved but I shall still see her. Other arrangements have already been put in place as and when necessary so I have been told not to worry about it.
She has seen her gran have a knee and a foot operation in her three years so she is pretty used to it. I wonder what she will make of the collar I shall have to wear post op......

As it is only me and hubby at home now we do not need to make any special arrangements so that is one worry less.

Thank you once again, you wonderful people, you are keeping me buoyant and I hope I can do the same for you one day. You all have your own problems but are always there to offer a hand to help others when in need.

    Bless you all,

    Elna x

    Hi elna

I am pleased to read that you have now got used to the idea of your operation. Your surgeon seems a good one and has informed you well of what he is going to do. This surgery hopefully will make a big difference to the sensations in your body that you are having at the moment and will definately stop further deterioration.

Your little granddaughter will have lots of questions I guess about your collar  make sure you have a pen and paper at the ready so you can tell us.....cause children say the funniest things.
And I am sure it will not be long before you get your babysitting duties back

I hope your appointment comes soon, I have my fingers crossed for you.
Take care to a very brave lady, whom I am using as my role model.

    Hi Elna...

I hope you get your date for the op very soon... and that you are rid of the pain...and regain some of the sensation in your arms and legs. :!:

It's really hard not being able to do the granny babysitting.... I feel the same. ... but after the op, who knows?, once you've had time to recover you may well be able to do so again.
I've found that my own grandchildren accept what their 'Nana' can and cannot do and yours will be the same.....Despite the rigours of this condition, we are still able to show love and have happy experiences with them.

When I was in Rome earlier this year, Matthew aged 9, had great fun pushing me in my wheelchair around a very busy St Peter's Basilica! When he came to a large enough space, he gave a bigger push and jumped on the back for a 'hurly'. Thomas, who's 6, took advantage of the wheelchair and sat on my knee when we were out and about.

Things change Elna, but we are still the same people and the love we give and receive doesn't diminish... despite arther!

Lots of love, strength and hope.

Thank you once again to those that have taken the time to reply since my last posting around 9.00pm yesterday. You are all so kind.

You are right, Julie, Lola will be asking me lots of questions about the collar. When I was telling her mummy about the mri and going into the tunnel, Lola was listening and now when we play she asks to play going in the tunnel many times and I put a blanket over her to keep her warm and she knows she has to stay very still and then I make noises, usually not a bit like the noise the machine really makes every now and again and then I ask her half way through which is abut 2 minutes  if she is ok and then we go on a little more in this fashion. Then I pretend to open the door and pull her out on the stretcher/bed. I have to do this again and again - they love repetition at that age, it nearly drives me mad - well madder than I am already :lol: Hubby says to me sometimes, where do you get your patience from?

You are so right, Iris, the little ones quickly adapt to what we can and cannot do and I bet Matthew and Thomas loved the wheelchair! Did you feel safe with Matthew pushing and doing "hurly's" - did you shut your eyes tight sometimes and hope for the best? I think I would have done!
Thank you for making me laugh Iris, we have to don't we really? We know what the other option is.

I did go for a slow walk with hubby before lunch (he only does slow walking  which suits me atm) not far but far enough for me.

I hope you are all as well as can be expected and able to enjoy the rest of the day.

    Love
    Elna x
