Groin pain

Hello. I have a diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis which is fairly well managed with biologic injections. I have had pain in my groin for over three years. I have had every scan and test there is. At the beginning I was told mild arthritic changes and an osteophyte. The groin pain is triggered by sitting upright, driving, having my legs pressed together in bed. It is a sharp pain deep in my groin. I have hip stiffness and walk with a slight limp. Walking long distance causes the groin pain. The consultant has told me the pain is not coming from my hip. I am at my wits end. I have no gynaecological issues. Nerve conduction tests were negative. I don’t know what to do next. This affects my daily living every day. The only thing that ever helped was a diagnostic local anaesthetic injection into my hip joint which stopped all pain for three days. Consultant said that’s meaningless as it would have numbed the entire area. Any ideas? Thanks for reading.

  • Hello @Jayneyb

Thank you for posting on Chat to Helpline. I am sorry to hear about the persistent pain you are experiencing in your groin and hip. It sounds as if this has been going on a long time and you have not received the treatment you hoped for. I am glad to hear that your Psoriatic arthritis is fairly well managed with biologic injections.

Pain and reduced mobility limits daily activities and can drag you down. It sounds as if you have been going through a tough time.

The fact that at the beginning of this journey, 3 years ago, you were told there were mild arthritic changes in your hip and an osteophyte, suggests that there may be some osteoarthritis (OA) in your hip joint. A new X-ray would confirm these changes and would show if the arthritis changes have got any worse. Asking your GP for a referral to the musculoskeletal (MSK) service may be worth considering or a second opinion from a different specialist.

We are not medically qualified to offer a definite diagnosis.
