Since having my first done l have found that my other hip is less painful, wether that is the euphoria of having the first done or a clynical thing l don't know.

Yes @john62 it's a relief for the other leg not to hold all the weight.

Day 9 and all is still going reasonably well, much better than I thought it would. I did my exercises this morning and found them to be slightly more difficult because of pains I have in my thigh particularly noticeable when I'm doing hip abduction. I took the plunge today and with my wifes help removed my surgical stockings and then got into the bath to have a shower, the luxury was pure heaven. The biggest problem now is getting a new pair of surgical stockings on, they are so tight I'm not sure my wife will be able to do it with the OA in her fingers, any suggestions.

She did it with the help of a polythene bag over my foot, it was a bit of a struggle but we got there in the end.

You're doing really well @john62 that's great after day 9. I wouldn't have dreamt of getting into the bath so soon but that first shower is bliss isn't it!
Well done to your wife for helping with the stockings, my poor husband was so fed up helping with those every day for six weeks.

John that’s fab! The OT phoned me on Friday asking if I had a walk in shower or a shower over the bath ( we have a walk in shower) and she said it would be 6 weeks before I’ll be able to have a shower and 12 weeks for a bath! I will never last that long, she also said that the health board don’t give any household aids to help in recovery, but I am having a toilet frame, is there anything that I should buy myself that would help me daily ( I do have a husband but I don’t really want to rely on him for everything) independent lady here 😊

@Bevdav123 are you still going in for your op Wednesday? I would check with the hospital about showering, they told me l could have a shower because the dressing is waterproof but to try and keep that area out of the direct line of fire. As far as aids to assist with recovery l have the usual stuff, sock puller, long handled shoe horn, long grabber for picking things up off of the floor. I dont really have much more than that. If you wear any lace up shoes elsticated shoe laces are a god send. I'm sure you have grab handles fitted already. There may be others on here with other suggestions for aids.😀

Day 11, l had a good nights sleep last night however l did wake with pain in my thigh and knee, l took two tramadol and two paracetamol that after a short while worked and l was able to go back to sleep. I tried laying on my unoperated side for while which l was able to do with little or no pain, l also tried rolling over onto my stomach which was also ok. I don't intend on doing that regularly at this stage but for a few minutes on each it was good. I was a little stir crazy yesterday so my wife and l managed a 100 yard slow walk down our road, it was nice to be out and the walk was good and as it happens our local pub is at the 100 yard point 😁

You're brave rolling over like that, I can't even do that now!
Did you get tramadol on prescription? I was only given codeine and paracetamol.

@JPT originally l was on Zapain which didn't work at all well, l then went onto a fairly low dosage of modified tramadol. When l left hospital they gave me a weeks worth of standard 50mg tramadol two tabs up to 4 times each day taking two paracetamol with them also two ibroprufen in between those doses. Since running out of those l have beeb prescribed another months worth by which time hopefully l won't need them any longer.

Day 13
I went for my physio session yesterday which went well, they are pleased with my progress and gave me another set of exercises to do. Whilst there they changed my dressing and said the wound is clean and healing very well. Next appointment due 21st May and then 6 week review 23rd May. Today l have done my exercises and even managed to walk my dog around the block and visit my friends for a cuppa. I'm so longing for the day when l can take my dog on those lovely long walks in the countryside again.

You are doing fantastic! I’ve had my op today, starting to hurt a bit now, but I’ve sat on the chair and walked with crutches, hope to be going home tomorrow x

@Bevdav123 well done you, focus on your recovery, l'm sure it will go well for you. Keep us updated on your progress.

@john62 so pleased to hear you're recovering well, if that's your dog on your pic he's a beauty 😍. It will be lovely and sunny soon and perfect for those long country walks.
@Bevdav123 congratulations, and well done for being so brave with the cancellation. I came to say good luck but there you are, all finished 😊. I hope you managed to sort out the aides you needed at home and you get home okay and start the road to recovery. Loads of best wishes 💐

@ItsjustLisa yes thats our Beagle Ted, he's doing his Winston Churchill impression in that picture🤣 Have you heard anything regarding your op yet, hope you don't have to wait too long.
@Bevdav123 how are you feeling today? OK l hope. Ease yourself into your exercise routine and all will be well. Best of luck with it x

@john62 apologies for my late reply - life has become very busy - once back out and about and people soon forget to give you an easy life!
I see you've had your physio visit and I also see you are doing incredibly well - amazing - I'm sure you'll be back on your long dog walks before you know it, but do make sure you keep up the exercising. I tried to walk too far and got groin pain and soreness which was apparently from overdoing the walking before the results from the exercising had kicked in.
@Bevdav123 brilliant news - hope all is going well and you're home now!

Thank you @Janlyn it seems to be going better than l had thought it would, l wouldn't say easier but the pain levels are more than bearable. I'm sleeping quite well and there are many times when laying flat and still in bed where l feel really comfortable with no pain at all, bliss. Hope you are OK.

Didn’t have the best nights sleep was up at 6.30am (it’s going to be a long day ) feeling a little sore but that’s to be expected, I’ve lost my appetite (that never happens 😂) but managed a little porridge this morning, I’ve got inject myself for another 26 days, did it ok at the hospital but I’ve got a feeling it’ll be a different story at home lol got arthritis at the bottom of my spine and that seems to be playing up at the moment, but I suppose with all the hammering it’s bound to have affected it, anyway counting down to the stitches coming out ( not impatient at all) hoping for a good day now that I’m up , thanks for the well wishes 😊

Morning @Bevdav123 sorry to hear your sleep wasn't good last night and that you have lost your appetite, it will get better. Are you injecting blood thinners? They did talk to me about this but told me l could have oral blood thining pills instead, unsure as to why that is. What medication are you on? they will hopefully help with the pain. I'm on Trammadol which works quite well for me, l'm considering lowering the dose from 2 to 1 tablet as and when needed. Keep your chin up things will start to improve very soon. x

@john62 that's brilliant to hear, sleeping and comfortable with no pain, absolutely that's bliss! I still can't seem to believe I'm pain-free. I've realised this week that I seem to have made progress. I'm walking further and faster comfortably. Managing to lift and carry which I initially struggled with, and everyone seems to have forgotten I've had surgery so taking that as progress too!
@Bevdav123 sorry to hear you're having a tough time. Hoping it will get better for you soon. Sleeping and eating can get disrupted - our bodies have been through so much I suppose it's not surprising. Regarding the injections I found it got easier with practice. I managed in hospital whilst supervised but completely botched the first one at home, which taught me what not to do. After that it got easier and more routine but I must say I was happy when they were finished. Take care.

@Janlyn well I did the second one and it went ok 😊 have ate a little more today so hopefully as time goes by I’ll get back to normal @john62 I rang the doctor and I’ve had oromorph for the night, so hopefully tonight I’ll have a better nights sleep. Did anyone have a redness around the dressing ? I’ve just noticed it’s starting to get red.
1 -
@Bevdav123 you are doing really well with the injections, I was lucky to have the tablets, I'm not sure I would have coped so well with injections.
Sleep is problematic, but it does get easier and will happen when you really get tired and you stop consciously fighting it because you are not comfortable.
Take care. Julie x

@jpt I had oromorph from the drs and I woke a couple of times but went back more or less straight away, I’m going to attempt to wash my hair today, I’m sure I’ll feel more human after I’ve done that 😂 I’m very impatient I want everything to be working now , but I’m walking ok with the crutches, better than yesterday, so onwards and upwards!

@Bevdav123 well done, you'll get to the stage you will be sad when you've no more injections😂 I wonder if your painkillers are spoiling your appetite? I remember after being home a couple of days feeling nauseous and constipated and putting it down to the stronger painkillers. I decided I could cope with the pain more than this so I came off all tablets over than paracetamol and felt better in a day or so. I did get a craving for orange juice and oranges so my body must have been desperate for vitamin C. I didn't sleep for quite some time though and found I was always ready for my paracetamols. I did find my wound was quite red around the dressing but nothing too worrying. If you are worried at all you could take photos and see if it's getting worse/better and definitely ask your hospital/contact point if you are worried.
