Nerve pain after THR

Hi, I’m hoping someone can share some advice on what to do about nerve pain following THR.

Had my second hip replacement surgery in May (right hip), which went well. I was recovering well, but in the last couple of weeks I’ve been getting progressively worse nerve pain which started in my groin, but which is now focused on the outside of my thigh, knee and just below my knee.

It’s excruciating pain that means I can’t put by weight on my leg at all, it was intermittent but for the last couple of days it’s more persistent.

Don’t remember having anything similar with my first THR, and I have a feeling that if I speak to my GP or try to contact the consultant who did the op they’ll just say nerve pain was a risk of the surgery but it’s put me back where I was before the op, in fact it’s worse as I have no idea why it’s happening, I’ve been taking ibuprofen which was helping but last night it didn’t touch the pain that kept me awake for hours.

Will this just go away? I was doing so well it’s really thrown me off course 😥

Hello @alouis have you tried doing gentle exercise to see if that helps. We have a video for pre and post op surgery on hips, see below

    Hope it helps

Hi @noddingtonpete thanks for the video - it’s a good reminder. I do most of these when I remember and when I did them today along with the video they do help but it doesn’t seem to last.

Should I be doing these exercises multiple times a day? Having just returned from a short walk (1 mile) the pain worsened the longer I walked. I do wonder if it’s because my work means I’m sitting a desk most of the day. I’m thinking of getting a standing desk, if anyone has one I’d be interested to know if it’s helpful.

    Hello @alouis

My friend has a thing she calls a 'desk riser', it goes between sitting height and standing height. It wasn't a budget option but I have seen similar things you can put on top of your existing desk (presuming it's a computer set up you are after).

I think it is worth speaking to your GP because there are painkiller options that target nerve pain, there's no need to put up with it because it was a risk of the op - be persistent if you have to!

    All the best Joanne
