    Hi Speedalong
Do you have a reasonable magnet or could you borrow one?
Thats what I did.......OH actually had a telescopic thingy in the shed and a magnet on the end. It wont pick up the grabber but I put a dog clip on the grabber and the magnet attached to that {if that makes sense} anytime I dropped the grabber or litter picker upper as my little granddaughter called it LOL

    INGENIOUS - I LOVE IT!!!

I'm going to have to find someone willing to buy me one or raid S's room he used to love magnets when he was younger.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi Elizabeth,

have you changed the colour/shade of your motif?

S is very pleased to have me home - though all that careful planning ensured he was calm and happy and coped really well with me being in hospital. I'm so proud of him. He got up for school this morning with my friend and he carried up a cuppa (she'd made) and we had a cuddle and chat before school. You were right - it is ok having a cuddle on the bed - I have the unoperated leg between us.

Yes. It is orange instead of red. Have you been gone that long? The cuddle is lovely as long as they are well briefed on not touching the operated leg and mine grasped that point easily but then they have had years of practice.

Bless him for that cup of tea. What a star!

    Hi Elizabeth,

he understands things are sore with visual evidence - so I showed him my gory dressing in hospital and the dressing again when I came home. He is gentle. I let him touch the dressing to, because I do trust him (expect when he is ill or very distressed.)

    Hi Toni and DD,

it is so GREAT to be home, I'm so HAPPY. For now it is novel - will be ok until the novelty wears off and I start getting bored!!

Have had a visit from OT rail fitter, discharge support team, taxi delivering things ward forgot to send him home with(!) district nurse a friend popped in for coffee ... had phone calls back from GP, ward and a nurse ... all today!! Managed to fit some time in the garden, cuddles with cat and just elevating leg on bed now. Need to do some physio before go downstairs again.

    Hi Speedalong

Glad to see that you are doing so well and things have worked out well at home. I returned to my own home yesterday after 2 weeks with my sister. Still quite tired and my leg is stlll very swollen but not in any pain or much discomfort really. (2 weeks 1 day post-op now). Are you on blood thinners? I am not having my staples removed until 26th May (ie 20 days post op) because I'm on methotrexate and that slows down the healing process.

Had quite a bad flare up of my rheumatoid in my neck and left elbow this week so haven't been on the laptop much, but it's passing off now..

I think I would have appreciated some more advice from the hospital about the actual recovery process - eg how long will my leg be swollen, when should I go out walking, etc, etc..

I went out last Monday to another hospital for blood tests and definitely overdid the walking - so have been very cautious since then!!

    Best wishes

Hi Hileena - will fit exercises into a routine better when S is back at school - only managed them 2 times today but did stairs and walks etc lots

My plan is to do lying down ones before I get up and after each time I elevate leg on bed. The standing ones I want to tie in with food/drink prep. Then they just become routine.

    Are you still doing yours??

    Hi Cris,

you can definitely borrow my brain - preferably at night - my body needs it to switch off as it is racing....

I have rarely ever left my cat - only for both hip ops, when S was emergency admitted to hospital on two occasions and for a funeral. She doesn't seem at all traumatised this time - but S and friends were at home each evening. She is sticking to me like glue at present.

Hi Marion, so glad to hear from you.
I returned to my own home yesterday after 2 weeks with my sister.
Are you now home-alone? Sounds like your sister was great.
Still quite tired and my leg is stlll very swollen but not in any pain or much discomfort really. (2 weeks 1 day post-op now).
My leg is more swollen today than it was when I first came out of hospital ... I think I spent alot more time in hospital with it elevated and did a lot less walking there too. I'm going to try and rest it up more regularly. I wonder if the heat is making it worse too? My pain is much better than it was post op and is now much better than it was if compared to a bad day or the end of any work day.

I'm trying to work out my pain meds at mo - lowest dose possible for sake of digestive system, but also enough to keep things tolerable. What about you?
    Are you on blood thinners?
Unfortunately -yes! I have to inject myself in the stomach daily for what seems ever with clexine ... This is has changed from 13 years ago - where you only had to have the jabs whilst in hospital. Did my first jab myself this morning. That was a big hurdle for me. I think the first one is the worst.
I am not having my staples removed until 26th May (ie 20 days post op) because I'm on methotrexate and that slows down the healing process.
Wow that is a long time to wait, How long is your scar? Is it knitting together? My scar is 20+cm long ( resurfacing scars are longer than the modern THR scar - my THR scar 13 years ago was also long.) The district nurse changed my dressing today and the wound finally looked dry. Because it is partly under my buttock, I partly sit on it and have to move on it for transfers etc so it bled a lot in the beginning and was very sore when I had to rest on it. I'm having my staples out on Wednesday. Just realised that is the same day as you!
Had quite a bad flare up of my rheumatoid in my neck and left elbow this week so haven't been on the laptop much, but it's passing off now..
That must have made things doubly difficult for you, glad it is passing.
I think I would have appreciated some more advice from the hospital about the actual recovery process - eg how long will my leg be swollen, when should I go out walking, etc, etc..
Yes me too. Once home realised how little I know!! I know I can fully weight bear, and should do physio 4 times a day and I know what the restrictions are and that is all....

I went out last Monday to another hospital for blood tests and definitely overdid the walking - so have been very cautious since then!!
Wow!! Did you not ask for a porter to transport you?

How are you doing with getting in and out of cars etc? I came home in an ambulance - and so don't have any idea about how I will cope and manage restrictions,

Hi Hileena, seem to be managing jabs without bruising .. just leaves mark where punctured skin. I am struggling to fit in exercises too ... every thing takes so long ... I MUST establish a routine for them ... so they become a part of my day/

    Hi Hileena,

I don't have anything to do with stairs in my exercise programme !!.... but in the course of a day I go up and down stairs quite a bit ... the only place I'm comfy to elevate my leg (until my new chair arrives) is on my bed. My exercises require me lying flat for some - so do on bed and standing and holding onto something - I hold the worktop in the kitchen. I'm meant to do them all 4 times a day - apart from one which they suggest doing every hour for 1/2 a minute - yeah right!! Do it when ever I think of it.

    Hi Folks

My computer has been out of action - hence I haven't been able to post in the last couple of days...

Woke up Saturday morning after 8 hours sleep and felt great!! leg was much less swollen as I had had it on a pillow overnight.

I am 'home alone' (apart from 1 cat ... the dogs are coming home next Thursday) but that's fine - family/friends have been phoning and texting and I have also had visitors every day, including my daughter. who has been helping me to wash! I'm desperate for a proper shower, but can't have one until after the staples are removed next Wednesday..

Speedalong: Glad to see that you are continuing to improve. My stomach is full of little bruises from the heparin injections, but so long as they prevent a DVT I can put up with that!!
My exercises are going OK - in fact I think I must be doing them in my sleep too as I am waking up with sore heels.
I am just taking 2 x paracetamol every 6 hours now - it's about the only painkiller I can tolerate - and I'm taking Floradix iron supplement as I don't want to go anaemic again...

    Will be posting again tomorrow.
    best wishes
