Hello all you busy gardening peeps! And welcome to "gardeners' corner" Rich C - very impressed by your gardening without a garden!!!
Weather has been lovely here today and I have spent a happy hour in the greenhouse planting lettuce and beetroot and repotting the lettuce I started a couple of weeks ago into individual pots so their little feet won't have to be disturbed again
Toni, shall I send the hunks round to rake your lawn?

Feeling a bit Guilty, I did manage to cut all the grasses back and put the rubbish in the recycle bin and took the broken fencing panels to the tip yesterday but today --- I have done nothing in the garden despite it being a glorious day! I was working until 1 and then came home and spent the afternoon watching the Rugby!
I have Hydro in the morning - but, if its a nice day again I am definately going out to do some more gardening. I am thinking that I should have given up TV for lent!

Hi Cath
you did an amazing amount!! You need some days to sit an admire yesterday's handiwork
Tilly thanks very much they have produced three buckets of moss so far....shall we used it for our hanging baskets??

Hi everyone,
I have been for my hydrotherapy this morning and felt quite refreshed so came home and as I promised went back out into the Garden! Cut yet more bushes back and filled the car with the rubbish and went off to the tip again.
My Hydro appt was 10 oclock and got back in about 11.15 had a cuppa and went out into gargen about 11.45, because I took my watch off for hydro had no idea of the time. I was really shocked when I got back from the tip to find it was 2.45 That means I have spent 3 hours working! I am now a bit achey to sya the least so am going to rest, hope I don't suffer for it, but the back garden is certainly looking tidier. Grass cutting is next on the list!!! but not today!
Hope you are all enjoying the lovely day today, having said that the sun is a bit hazey now.

cath
wow you have been working hard. please rest up now and i hope you dont get pay back.
i have planted a weeping willow into a large pot, a few bulbs into the border a a small clamatis. starting to look like a garden, still wish me lawn was sorted and not a mud pit0 -
Coco You have been busy too. I would love a weeping willow in my front garden but I am told that they have "destructive" roots and it may be too near the bungalow. Planting in a pot might be the answer - do you intend to keep it in there permanently, I am not too good at this Gardening milarky! so would be grateful for advice.

i spoke to a very helpful man at the garden centre and said id love one but as there is so much rubble under the lawn i dont think i could dig it deep enough.
he said he has had one in a pot for years and it has thrived, start off with a pot 2 & 1/2 times the size of the pot it comes in let it settle for several months and then increase the size of the pot if needed.
his has been in a large pot for years and done fine. so i will stick with the pot for now and see how it goes. the beauty of it being in a pot is it can be moved to a more shelterd part of the garden in winter to avoid the high winds, they are pretty hardy.
i only paid £10 for mine, its just under 5ft tall and will grow another 20 cm in hight only so not 2 over powering in the garden. ive always wanted one.
im fairly new to gardening to cath but im not shy in asking advice even from other shoppers if they are looking at the same thing as me , good luck with it and have a look around, see what is available.0 -
Thanks Coco, might just try that out, £10 sounds a bargain! I also want a magnolia tree. I bought my sister one as a house warming gift for her when she moved house 4 years ago -- its thriving and looks beautiful when it is in flower.

hi not been around for quite a while but now the sun has come out i'm thinking gardening!!
any tips for lawns - we moved into a new property about 5 years ago which had no lawn. neighbours paid for expensive turf which died off very quickly but my hubby seeded ours which grow quite well although bit patchy - the soil is full of clay and doesn't drain very well - we put lots of top soil down but now the lawn is just moss. we do have a very large silver birch at the bottom of the garden.
would appreciate any advice.

Hi Katie,
Yes I have noticed that I have an awful lot of moss in my lawn, dont really know what to do other than to rake it out. My rear garden is south facing and 46ft x 46ft and mainly lawn so think I might be raking a while!
Cath0 -
thanks rehab - the link is really good will be showing hubby later. he's suggest having astro-turf laid (anything to get out of mowing the lawn).
having trouble with our indoor bonsai too - think should take up something easier like reading or watching TV.

Cath, have a look at a "**** willow" they dont grow so high and are lovely.0
-
Thanks coco, will do - is that the one that you have bought?
Cath0 -
Yep, couldnt remember the name of it last night so went out this morning and got the tag
, it will grow just about anywhere in any soil. will grow approx 20 cm taller than it was when you bought it and upto 1 meter wide (so not to big).
so no fear of it taking over the whole garden. i have mine in a small area sectioned of which you cant do to much with, why the builders built it like that i dont know but its made a feature of the space now. my garden is on 2 levels.0 -
Morning all
Its a beautiful spring morning here! sun out, birds singing and I have been out and done a few more jobs in the garden, allocated myself an hour after which back started to twinge so have stopped! Did a bit too much the other day and suffered for it. Think the only way I am going to manage this gardening milarky is to do a little bit every day.
Coco I have seen a **** willow £8.99 but am hoping to go to the local Nusrsery as things are much cheaper there -- and finances are a bit tighter now I am part time lol
Cath0 -
i hope you manage to find a nice one cath, enjoy your day and dont do tomuch, xx0

Hello Coco, Cath & all!
Yesterday I spent a happy hour in the greenhouse planting seeds of red geranium, lobelia and bizzy lizzy and I planted some of my first early new pots into a growing sack. They had been chitting on the windowsill for so long that they were coming into leaf so thought I had better do something with them!
Don't know if you have heard about "The Horticultural Channel?" which is a dedicated gardening tv channel? I knew about it but thought I couldn't get it cos it's on Sky which we don't have, but my hubby has just told me that I can watch it on the internet. Have had a quick look and it looks really good!
Cath, I reckon your "a bit at a time" approach is a good one cos it is very easy to overdo it!
Right, off to make a cuppa and have a look at that gardening channel whilst I eat my Creme Egg lunch!
Love Tilly xxx0 -
You're welcome Rebab! Hope it's as good I am anticipating!

Hi Just watched the horticultural channel - Thanks for the link
Cath0 -
Hi everyone ---What an absolutely glorious morning - sun is out and it is even warm ----AND--- I have cut the back lawn!!!! Taken me just an hour to do it. So its now time for a rest
Thats 5 hours I have given to the garden this week and it has certainly made a difference! Next job borders! - and then I start on the front garden!
Hope that you are all enjoying your gardens and sorry for those of you that may have rain today!
Cath0 -
I have the answer to gardening, for us chaps, if you have any problems just go and get a more powerful tool, might sound a bit 'blokey' but IT WORKS.
Grass gets cut in 1/4 of the time, leaves get collected/shredded rather than brushing/collecting/disposing, hedges get trimmed quicker meaning less lifting time, vegetable patch gets tilled quicker meaning no digging and less fatigue, shredder means less trips to dump and mulch for flower beds rather than 'brought in' stuff.
Simples!
8) Its a grin, honest!
Now, where did I put that beer.........0 -
delboy wrote:Wahay! My greenhouse is going to be more usable from today as a lot of neighbours trees (Sycamore weeds) are being topped by a third so I'll have more light in there.
Hoorah!!
