Morning Rob, I hope you had a reasonable night and that things are settling down in your joint. I know that nightclubs are very noisy places in the small wee hours, but, honest-to-God, the average NHS hospital gives them a good run for their money in that department! Hi all,
Thanks for the words of support.
I went under around 2pm and was out at 5. Didn't feel anything for the first night until 6am. Those nerve blocks are great but they do feel weird.
When I did get the feeling back, i felt what I thought was rubbing on the plaster so they got the plaster techs to check it out, better safe than sorry. In the end, it turned out to be where the wound bled and soaked into the gause which was then pulling on the wound itself when I moved.
Done my forst injection myself yesterday (you were right, they are not that bad but after 6 weeks I will start to look like a pin cushion.
Got out of hospital at around 4 yesterday afternoon, no morphine at all and very little pain killers were required. We travelled up to Dumfries last night, we arrived around 1130. The journey wasn't to bad as they gave me a long acting pain killer before I was discharged.
I am glad I chose to stay at my parents for the first 2 weeks, there is no way I would have coped with the stairs and toilet at home.
My ankle at the moment is quite comfortable, I am on co-codamol to keep the pain down. The worst part is when I get up to go to the toilet and the blood rushes to the ankle and I get a lot of stining andd aching but that soon settles down when I elevate my leg again.
Well, back to rest now. will keep you all updated on my progress.

So, why did you get yourself in such a tizz?! (That was typed with some affection, I assure you.) I bet it hasn't been as bad as you were fearing, be sensible, do any exercises that you have been told to do, the hep injections are straightforward and you can alternate sites if necessary (if you use your thighs then sit with your legs out straight, that relaxes the muscles and makes things less sensitive) and I am sure you will be absolutely fine. Well done Rob, it's good to hear from you. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi Rob
Just had a call from my OH to say you've posted on the forum!
Glad everything went ok and wish you the best for a speedy recovery. At least you will have 2 weeks of being spoilt, like mums do.
I guess coping with stairs could be a problem (I did suggest to my OH that if I have to go down the ankle fusion route that I move into my mother-in laws (ground floor) flat and she move in with my OH,she didn't seem keen on the idea).
Have to see the surgeon myself in a couple of weeks to see what he will advise,at least reading your post gives me (and others) a flavour of what to expect.
Take care and enjoy the rest.
Regards

Hi Rob,
I was wondering how you had got on, really glad it all went well for you. Its natural to worry about any operation, if we didn't I think we would be kidding ourselves......even those that say they dont!
My son has had, and still has, large operations to come on his leg [accident, not Arthritis] He said the same as you about getting up. He was advised to elevate and before standing to put it on the floor for a few mins rather than standing straight up...hope ive explained this? He said it was better. His BP went into his boots before this so nearly keeled over a few times!! At 6ft I made sure his Dad was there!
Keep positive and I wish you a speedy recoveryArty
Hope today is a good day for you0 -

Morning Rob, how goes it today? I think I read somewhere that you had a rough night - keep up with the pain dullers as much as you can, they do take the edge off, they might also have a slightly cumulative effect and should help you sleep. I know full well the misery of not being able to get a joint comfortable - do you have something to keep the duvet off your ankle? DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Think it might have been in the mash unit DD.....
Rob am hoping that things are still going well for you.
I remember after my back opp thinking I would never sleep again - I did and mostly I do

Hi Rob, great that you are posting again, already.
You are on the right side of the op now. How long do you have to wear the plaster for? Glad you are managing the post-op pain ok, budget your meds well so that you get a few good hours sleep at night.
Keep resting.
Oh yes and don't forget to alternate sides with the jabs, (probably teaching you to suck eggs ...)
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
finally, a good nights sleep.
Went to bed at 1 and woke up at 8. feel so much better for it.0 -
How much sleep? HOW MUCH? You lucky, LUCKY *******. I am deeply, deeply envious. I am glad tho that it has helped and that you are feeling better for it. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi bobbyger, how are things today? I hope you had another good night, I read elsewhere that your plaster is causing you some discomfort but, not having ever broken anything, I cannot help on that front. Would you like me to go and break summat so I can share the experience? I hope you are OK. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi bobbyger
Just popping in to see how you were doing.
That was a good sleep the other night, lucky you.
Take care

DD, no need for you to go and do something like that. But thanks for the offer .
It was another good night, the main pain comes in the evening time and when I stand up. The stinging I got a couple of days ago has gone which seems to mean the wounds are healing nicely. It is now a throbbing pain in the bone but I expect it shall be like that for a little while yet.
The hot sensation on my heel is still there but its not getting any worse so I'm just keeping an eye on it incase it does get worse. It reminds me of the sensation you get if the tubigrip you are wearing is too tight and as they wrapped my leg in a wadding bandage then covered it in tubigrip before the applied the cast, I guess thats what it is.
My mum's enjoying looking after me even though she takes it too far at times, she thinks I am unable to turn the light on when i go to the loo
Need to speak to the docs tomorrow. the sharps bin they gave me for my needles is full already so I need to source a new one.
Anyway, thanks to all for your support and I will keep you posted on my recovery.
