ichabod6 wrote:Hello bubbadog,
I am a man of few words- when I want to be.
The second sentence is my review.
If you put the title of the book and the author in bold and give the book a rating out of 5, I will allow it as a review. One of the rules of The Book Club is you must review the book after reading!0 -
I didnt realise it was a club with rules.
I thought it was just a site like any other on the AC website.0 -

Hope all of you had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the sun! I managed to sit in the garden and in the conservatory reading over the weekend and I'm enjoying Dave Ghan, Depeche Mode and the second coming. It's very easy to read and full of interesting information I never knew about the early years of Depeche Mode. Are you all enjoying the books your reading and how is the Book Of The Month for March..... 12 Years a Slave going? Is it easy to read, enjoyable? .......0

The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty
I must admit I had high hopes for this book, having read so many positive reviews and having been urged to read it by so many people. Maybe that is why I didn't think it was brilliant! I did enjoy it, don't get me wrong, but I wasn't hooked as it were. Maybe it is because I am not a mother too? Who knows. The story was good and it was an enjoyable easy read.
I award ***/****
Going to start 12 years a slave later!0 -
Thank you for a great review, I may have to add that book on to my extremely tall books to read pile!! Hope you enjoy 12 Years A Slave .0
-
I am struggling with 12 years a slave - finding it 'steady'. Story slow.... does it get better? Give me inspiration, please. :x0
-
I've read the first 60 or so pages of 12 years a slave so far. I have to say that it is the human interest that keeps me going - I just can't believe that people were so awful to other people. Although, of course, I can believe it really. Still happens in some places doesn't it?0
-
I understand it's suppose to be based on a true story, it is pretty much a book of history. So some people may get on with it and for others it may not be their cup of tea, so if it's not for you then you don't have to carry on reading it. You can read something else.
Talking of Books! It's that time of the month again! We need to find a book for Book Of The Month for April so any idea's please post them! Maybe a jolly book for April would be nice after March's!
Have a good weekend bookies and get your thinking caps on!0 -
I read a big chunk of 12 years this morning and it was really exciting. I am enjoying it, if you can enjoy such a sad story!0
-
Managed to get a big chunk of reading in over the weekend, hope everyone else had some reading time over the weekend it is lovely to snuggle down and read of an afternoon while your OH watches the football!
I wanted to remind everyone to post any suggestions for Book Of The Month for April. The last day for suggestions will be Friday. Hope that's OK with everyone.0 -
I collected The Rosie Project from the library today - looks like it could be quite light hearted if you are interested?? NOt got much of 12 years left now - going to try and finish it tomorrow! I am enjoying it. Thanks for the recommendation.0
-
My problem is, Bubbadog is that I am more likely to be watching the football than my OH! I have a long bus ride to Wembley on Sunday to watch the Johnston Paint Trophy Final (come on Spireites!) so perhaps that is time I can get into 12 years a slave on my Kindle. I have a suggestion for Book of the Month for April and that is Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. It is a story based on a true story and a first time novel - it was recommended by my tutor at my Creative Writing Class. Sorry though, not sure it is very cheerful but it is supposedly a very good first novel by a young Australian Author. The story is based in Iceland though.... :?0

Tubby - I read a review of that in the grauniad on Saturday and put it on my library shortlist. It doesn't look that "lighthearted" in as much as it follows the last few months of someone sentenced to death! But I agree, it looks like a very good book. Maybe Bubba will allow a choice of book of the month??
I am enjoying The Rosie Project. It is very funny!
I did enjoy 12 years a slave, keep going.0 -
Thank you for the suggestions for Book Of The Month For April, and will agree with Frogmella and have both books so everyone can have a choice of Burial Rites by Hannah Kent & The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion I look forward to reading the reviews! Have a good weekend everyone.0

Ichbold suggested a really good idea for a post so here goes:-
What is your most favourite book?
I hate to say it but mine is : Twilight by Stephenie Meyer0 -
Frogmelia - I will keep going and I will then go on to The Rosie Project for some light relief
Great to have two books to go at this month - dark and light.
Ichbold and Bubbadog, picking a favourite book is so difficult because it depends on my my mood but I love the Magicians' Guild Trilogy by Trudi Canavan. But then again, I also love Wuthering Heights and Cider with Rosie....the question is too hard :shock:0 -
Mine was an easy pick; I've been re-reading it every three
or four years for almost half a century now.
Anna of the Five Towns by Arnold Bennett0 -
I haven't thought that hard about my favourite book, been on a massive walk today! But I will give it some thought, promise. Not sure I can come up with one though, as Tubby says it depends on mood, location, time of year!
I am enjoying the rosie project. Making me laugh! Bit of lighthearted relief after 12 years. I have got The Queen's Gambit coming in next but then I will order Burial Rites.0 -
It is hard pinpointing a favourite book but if I want to read a book I know I will enjoy I do head back to the Twilight Saga books.
Frogmella glad your enjoying The Rosie Project, look forward to reading your Review on it. Hope you all have a good week.0 -
Hi all,
Up until recently I haven't really had the time to sit down with a good book and just enjoy reading it!
I've only been reading baby related books, which I am now fed-up with.
So, with my little one now at playgroup and having a few minutes to myself ....
Any recommended reading? I do have a 'bucket list' for books. Though I am always happy to add more to it. I've just started Life or Pi. I really enjoyed the film.
I have also been umming and ahhing about a kindle or similar device. Any comments?0 -
I haven't been here long but there are some great books mentioned on this page alone. I am currently trying to finish Twelve Years A Slave but not finding the writing very inspiring. The human interest is good but it is, in my humble opinion, written in a dull style. The Rosie Project, however, has made me laugh out loud a few times and has intriguing characters - I keep dipping into to it when I can take no more of the other one! I am hoping to start Burial Rites by the end of this week. In terms of devices, I favour the Kindle as I have it loaded on my lap top, tablet (both Apple) and on an original Kindle. They all link and sync to the latest page read as long as the last two devices are connected to the internet at the time. The original Kindle is fantastic for when my hands are really hurting because it is so light, it is (but don't tell the two Apples) my favourite for reading in bed but I do have the flexibility of all three which for an avid reader is such a blessing0

The Rosie Project
I'll only do a brief review as it is a BOTM for April. I found this book really funny. It might have helped that my degree is in Biochemistry so I understood some of the science references but I think that it was funny regardless. The main character, Don, is just odd but I really liked is matter of fact approach to life.
I award ****/*****
I picked up The Queen's Gambit today which I have seen recommended in a few places. It is about Katherine Parr, as you know I like a bit of historical fiction so I am looking forward to this one!0 -
A huge welcome Hannah to The Book Club! You will find members reviews of books we have all read from page one of the Thread when I started many, many moons ago!! We always review books we have read not just Books Of The Month, which are chosen by members.
As for Kindles, I think they are great because they are light weight and you can have a crazy number of books on them as well as magazines and newspapers. I also still read the good old paperback and hard back books. I'm just finishing a paperback book that I wanted to read that wasn't available on the kindle.
I hope you will enjoy The Book Club, and if you want to I think you should choose the book for May's Book Of The Month you don't have to decide yet you still have a few weeks.0
